Kim Nguyen @ The Allen School

Hello Allen School Fam,

Ugh, I’ve been avoiding writing this post and now it’s definitely overdue. Yesterday was my last day as your fulltime Allen School Career Advisor. I am returning to industry to help an old colleague build out their company’s first University Recruiting program. I am absolutely crushed over leaving this role. I will always think back on the last 15 months with you as one of the ultimate highlights of my career. Real talk- you guys were there for me at a moment in my career when I felt a bit lost, unsure of what my next move should be. Y’all reminded me that I feel most at home working with college students and that my true calling is to work in a capacity where I am able to help young people transition into the start of their professional careers. Watching y’all do hard things every day reminded me that I can do hard things too!

Okay, enough sap. Don’t worry, I’m still going to be around! I’m staying local to Seattle and will continue to teach the 492 J Career Seminar with the marvelous Kat Wang this quarter and we plan to offer it again in the spring (and for as long as the Allen School will have us :D). I’m still wrapping up some work items so you’ll still get a few blog posts from me over the next few weeks.

Now, are you wondering what to do if you need help with career related questions? Here’s what you can do!

1. Come to Drop-ins/Quick Questions! Although I will no longer be available for quick questions or 1:1 appointments through acuity, you can still come chat with one of our awesome peer advisors or the advising team. We’ve done a lot of knowledge sharing over the last year and they can absolutely help you out (they’ve learned from the best :P).

2. If you don’t want to come in person, you can email ugrad-advisor@cs.washington.edu with your career related questions and the advising team will take care of you. For reals, do not hesitate to reach out to the advising team for ANY situation (sticky career scenario or otherwise). This team has your best interests at heart and will always provide counsel to help you navigate whatever you got going on.

3. For any issues you are experiencing with an Affiliate company, please reach out to both Kay (External Relations Director) at kbeck@cs.washington.edu and Crystal (Director of Student Services) at ceney@cs.washington.edu via email.

4. My guides and presentations will always be available to you. I plan to write more in my capacity as the 492 J lecturer and will be sure to always link them from here: http://bit.ly/csecareerguide

5. Don’t forget the resources outside of the Allen School! The College of Engineering has an excellent Career Center (https://www.engr.washington.edu/current/careercenter) as does the University of Washington at large (https://careers.uw.edu/)

My kim@cs.washington.edu email will continue to work if you feel compelled to leave me notes about how much you will miss seeing me on the daily. However for any new issues coming up, you should direct those to the ugrad-advisor@cs email address. I am still working through my inbox and will respond to emails I have received previously.

LOVE YOU FOREVER! YOU GOT THIS! I BELIEVE IN YOU!
