CSE 452: in spring 2018 the CSE 451 prerequisite will be waived

CSE 452: Distributed Systems has one of the longest pre-requisite chains of
any course offered by the department, which has caused some issues
for students in the past since it is also offered only once per year.
Most specifically, 452 has required 451 (operating systems), which in turn
required 333 (systems programming) and 332 (data structures), and so forth.

Starting with this spring’s offering of 452, we have re-designed the course
project to allow us to restate its pre-requisite as requiring 332 and 333,
with 451 strongly recommended. There are additional logisticss needed to make
this permanent, so for now it will apply experimentally to this spring’s offering.
That is, students may take 452 without first taking 451, but you are
still encouraged to take 451 then 452 if you can.

Related, we have moved the time slot for 452 this spring so it will not
collide with 451. Taking 451 and 452 at the same time is fine, subject to the
warning that both courses have a higher than average workload, even among
CSE courses.

If you wish to enroll in 452 this spring without having completed 451, there will be a google form linked in the UW Time Schedule and sent out to this blog so you can sign up on that to request an add code.

If you have further questions, you can reach out to the advisors at ugrad-advisor@cs.uw.edu

Thank you,

Winter 2018 Mock Technical Interview Sign-Up!

CSE undergraduates (only!) who plan on engaging in technical interviews in the near future should sign up here for the Mock Technical Interview events to be held in the CSE advising offices the evenings of Wednesday, January 31 and Tuesday, February 6, 2018.  The 45 minute sessions begin at 6:00 pm, 6:45 pm, and 7:30 pm on both days.

At these events, technical interviewers from several of our industry affiliates will engage in abbreviated (30 minute) one-on-one mock technical interviews with students. The interviewers will provide feedback to the students during and after the interviews.  All students should plan on bringing a copy of their resume to the interviews.

This event has extremely limited space. It is geared first and foremost toward CSE students who plan to earn their degree before Autumn 2019.  The sign-up deadline is noon this Friday, January 26, so please submit your input quickly.  Slots will be filled in order of expected graduation from the pool of students who sign up prior to the deadline.

Students should sign-up for as many interview slots on the linked form as they are available for on either day to have the best chance of securing an interview.  Only one Winter Quarter interview (either on January 31 or on February 6) will be provided to each selected student.

Attention all graduating students

FYI, if you *think* you are graduating this quarter, or WANT to graduate this quarter and have not been in to see a CSE advisor, you need to do that before tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow is the last day to file for WINTER graduation.  You should come to dropins if you want to file for Winter either this afternoon or tomorrow morning.

How do you know if you’ve filed? You can go to your MyCSE login and check to see if you have a graduation date, or check on your Degree Audit through MyUW or MyPlan.  If in doubt, as in, you don’t see any record of it online but you think you came in, you can email ugrad-advisor@cs.

If you want to graduate in Spring, Summer or Fall, you should plan to come in for your graduation appointment by Feb. 6th as we need to submit them before the deadline for Graduating Senior priority which gives you permission to register before anyone else.  Please don’t come today or tomorrow if you are finishing spring or later, anytime next week through Feb. 6th is just fine.

Let us know if you have questions,

Crystal

ACM/ACMW Upcoming Events

Hi all,

There is ACM Movie Night this Friday at 5:20pm in EEB 105. We’ll be watching Her.

Next week, with ACMW, there will be two Career Fair Prep workshops from 4:30-5:30pm, Monday and Tuesday evenings. We will go over the basics of career fairs, if this will be your first one, and then also practice how to talk to recruiters about yourself and what you’re looking for. Location will be announced later this week, so stay tuned!

Interview Prep workshops are still happening. These will be a recurring weekly even this quarter, Tuesdays from 5:30-6:30pm in CSE 305.

Also, if you haven’t RSVP-ed for winter ball yet, you should fill out this form to let us know!  Winter ball is our big social event for the quarter, and a great opportunity to take a break from homework to socialize with others! There will be food, drinks for 21+, and music!

Cheers,

ACM

Winter Recruiting Fair: January 24th

We are excited for the upcoming Winter Recruiting Fair taking place in the CSE Atrium on January 24th and the HUB Ballroom on January 25th.  Hopefully, everyone has saved your name badge from the Fall Recruiting Fair as you will need it for entry to this event. In the unlikely event that you have lost your badge, we will reprint it but you must let us know by January 18th by completing this form:  Name tag form.
For entry to the event, you will need to bring your Husky Card (we will again ask you to swipe in) and to wear the gray CSE lanyard with your name badge. We do have a limited limited quantity of replacements available if you have lost yours. You can pick up your reprinted name tag and/or lanyard at the CSE front desk on January 19th, 22nd, or 23rd.
Please remember that this event is only for students majoring in computer science or computer engineering at the Paul G. Allen School on the UW Seattle campus and no other students will be admitted into the event.
