Quantum Challenge – Hosted by Microsoft Quantum

Quantum Challenge – Hosted by Microsoft Quantum

Quantum computing takes a giant leap forward from today’s technology—one that will forever alter our economic, industrial, academic, and societal landscape. In just hours or days, a quantum computer can solve complex problems that would otherwise take billions of years for today’s computers to solve. This has massive implications for research in healthcare, energy, environmental systems, smart materials, and more. From hardware to software, from development through deployment, Microsoft brings the only scalable quantum system to the academic community and customers.

Reminder: AI Event Tonight

Let’s chat: Sounding Board! The state of the Art in Conversational AI
Friday, April 20 (tonight!)
4-5 pm
Gowen 301

More info: https://www.cs.washington.edu/research/nlp/soundingboardevent

Registration: https://goo.gl/forms/c1kCnPwIjrFUEDFh2.

UW’s Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering and UW Electrical Engineering are pleased to host an event for those interested in artificial intelligence: a presentation by the Sounding Board team and a demonstration of the technology.

Sounding Board was the winning socialbot in the Amazon Alexa Prize, a competition to further conversational artificial intelligence. Our socialbot’s approach focuses on finding interesting content to talk about with human users, while trying to understand who the user is.

On Friday April 20th at 4 p.m., the student research team behind Sounding Board will provide a brief high-level presentation about the system. Following this research overview, UW Allen School Lecturer Lauren Bricker will chat with the bot to provide a demonstration of the technology.

Enjoy and happy Friday!

Diversity Scholarship – Deadline April 22nd

From: Tooba Qadri [mailto:tooba@quip.com]

Subject: Reminder- Quip Diversity Scholarship

Hi.

The Quip Diversity Scholarship is happening now!

Recipients will each receive $5000 toward their education ($1000 for each runner-up), and they will be invited to visit our office in San Francisco for a full day of learning, mentorship, and meeting the team (all expenses paid).

By running this scholarship, we’re hoping to have an impact beyond our team and do a small part to encourage students getting started in computer science.

We’re looking for applicants who

  • Are part of a group that has been historically underrepresented in STEM (including but not limited to: Women, African American, LatinX, American Indian, first-generation college students, LGBTQ+, and/or people with disabilities)
  • Have demonstrated interest or declaration of studying computer science or a related field.
  • Are currently enrolled as an undergraduate and masters student in the U.S. or Canada graduating in 2019 or later.
  • We are also accepting applications from students who are currently enrolled in or accepted into a full-time, onsite cohort in one of these coding programs.

Please help us spread the word and encourage students to apply. They can apply here: Apply. Applications must be received by April 22, 2018.

News on registration for 2018-2019

Dear students,
Fast version if you’re short on time:
1. Please fill out your MyPlan for the next year with what courses you hope to take
2. The tentative teaching schedule will be out around May 1st
3. Machine Learning will not, at this point in time, be offered this fall, but we’ll have an offering in winter and a large one in spring.    If we hire new faculty, we may be able to add it back for fall.  We’re really sorry.  🙁
4. The Virtual Reality capstone will be making a come-back for the 2018-2019 academic year!
5. If you are graduating in fall or winter this next year, apply to graduate by May 2nd, 2018 to get graduating senior priority registration of May 4th.
_________________________________________________________________________
Longer version – more details:
First, it is REALLY important that all of you put your desired courses in your MyPlan for the next year. We have recently been given a window into MyPlan data so we can run analysis on what students want to take in the coming year. We obviously have a lot of constraints on when/how often we can offer certain courses, but this is an amazing new tool that we would like to take advantage of as soon as possible.  Please only put the courses you really plan to take (don’t stack them all up to skew the statistics).

Registration for fall quarter is going to come up fast, it’s starting on May 4th for graduating students.  We hope/plan to have the tentative teaching schedule out to you by May 1st so you can plan for the upcoming year.

There are going to be some changes in store, some you’ll like (VR capstones returning, probably fall and spring, two offerings of 446, one BIG one in the spring) and some you will not like (no one to teach 446 – machine learning in fall) but things are still changing.  We are hoping to hire some additional faculty, and if that goes well, we’ll be able to likely add some additional courses, but that will happen as we move into summer.

Finally, we hope capstones will be posted for sign ups in early summer so stay tuned for that too.
