The Student Advisory Council (SAC) presents the first ever “CSE’s Got Talent,” a community showcase where anyone in the CSE community can share talents or hobbies that people might not know about.

We’re looking for talent in all forms–cooking, music, skateboarding, photography, poetry, and more! You can submit your talent on any medium (e.g. videos, pictures, document). 

Given COVID-19, we’ll be hosting this event in two ways:

1. Live event on Tuesday, May 26, hosted by MCs, for recordings of performance-related activities. 
2. Virtual museum for non-performance activities and to showcase what was live streamed for people who cannot make it.

Remote learning during the COVID-19 school closures can be challenging for all students. Imagine not having access to a computer or internet at home and tr­ying to keep up with school. SPS has been deploying district laptops, donated devices and hotspots to thousands of households in need. However, we know that many families need computer and web navigation coaching so their students can take advantage of online learning.

Will you volunteer from home to support the SPS Family Tech Support Helpline? Visit https://bit.ly/families_tech_help to sign up for a shift today!

Volunteer role:

• Receive calls from SPS families seeking help with technology and remote learning resources.
• Use a provided resource guide to assist parents and guardians of SPS students. We anticipate most challenges to be related to basic computer and internet set up, and/or accessing online learning tools (Schoology, Student Portal, the Source).
• Enter more challenging issues into an online Support Request Log – they will be addressed by a specialized tech support team.
• The helpline will also save voicemails from families – they will need to be entered into the Support Request Log as well.
• Volunteers will be supported by a project coordinator who will connect you with online resources and answer questions.

What you will need: phone (your number will be not be shared with callers), internet connection, computer or another device that allows you to access a web browser.
Volunteer from the comfort and safety of your home AND enjoy connecting with fellow Seattleites! 

• Visit https://bit.ly/families_tech_help to pick one or more shifts.
• Two-hour volunteer shifts are available every weekday 7:30 am – 7:30 pm to give as many volunteers the opportunity to help as possible and for families with different work schedules to be able to reach the helpline.
• Not sure if this is the right volunteer match for you? Try one shift and pick more up later!

What type of skills are needed for this role? 

• Be comfortable with computers as a user. No advanced technology knowledge is needed. Knowledge of SPS resources like Schoology or the Source is a plus but not necessary.
• Be a patient and clear communicator.
• Be open to learning about the technology barriers faced by different communities.
• If you are nervous about communicating via phone “live” but still want to help, let us know! In a week or so we will know which shifts are heavier on “transcribing voicemails”.

SPS Family Tech Support Helpline volunteers will help ensure all students continue learning during COVID-19 school closures. We hope you can join this exciting project!

Dear CSE students:  The national science foundation is doing a study and they are looking to interview (virtually) some students who fit the description below. If you identify and would like to participate, please fill out this short survey and we’ll be in touch.  If we have more than a few volunteers, we may not be able to pass along all the names. Thank you!

We are looking to identify around 5 young people who don’t fit the the traditional profile of a CS major or professional—meaning they haven’t grown up in a tech oriented household, and don’t fit the typical socioeconomic, gender, and racial profile of the tech field.  In addition to the “non-traditional” individuals, we are also specifically looking for one or two young people who do fit the traditional profile of a CS major or professional.  For both groups, we would be interested in how their learning was supported in a variety of settings, including school, out of school programs and at home or online, and if they encountered any barriers, challenges, or discrimination as they pursued their CS interest. Ideally the young people of either profile are currently enrolled in a CS program, or have recently started a job in a computing related field.

Subject: Study Request – COVID-19 Cough Monitoring App

Hello Allen School Students!  A few first day notes:

First, some good news for a change!

• Hector, our awesome front desk employee at the Gates Center has officially joined onto the CSE advising team.  He will still be working the front desk when we return to the building, but he’ll also be helping the advising team directly now, so you may hear from him directly with answers to your questions as he learns more about our team. Yay for Hector!

And some house keeping notes:

• If you are emailing the advising team this week asking for our help in a registration issue, please remember to include your full name, student number and sln’s of the courses you need help with (to drop/add) as that will help us get you answers faster.
• Also note the online dropins that we referenced yesterday: https://www.cs.washington.edu/academics/ugrad/advising, some students pointed out that they don’t have access to gmail chat, in that case, watch your email for updates with the Zoom link.

We hope everyone has a relatively smooth start to the quarter. Remember your CSE Advising team is here for you.
