Subject: An interesting Seattle-based Google story from the Sunday NY Times
CSE 421 will be added this fall quarter. The time is still to be determined, but keep watching for updates.
http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/time-sched/teaching2011-2012.html
It is still tentative of course until the quarter starts, but this should be fairly close to the final schedule.
Change prereqs:
1. CSE 444 will require 344 as a prerequisite starting this up coming academic year. So if you plan to take 444 this spring, you need to take 344 first.
2. By fall 2012, CSE 333 will be a prerequisite to CSE 451. For the 2011-2012 academic year it’s highly recommended, but not yet required.
Let the advising staff know if you have questions.

To: Robin Chang <robinc@u.washington.edu>
Cc: Mona <mpitre@uw.edu>, helene@uw.edu, megray@uw.edu
Just a quick message to let you know about a new scholarship program for undergraduates, recent graduates or Master’s students who plan to pursue a PhD in a STEM field and would be interested in attending one of Canada’s top-ranked research institutions. Please share with your interested students and colleagues.
The Fulbright Canada STEM Award is a new initiative of the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the U.S. (Fulbright Canada), in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and six of Canada’s leading research universities. The award, which is a three year award valued at around $120,000 (tuition, fees, and an annual stipend of $20,000), is the counterpart to Fulbright’s International Science and Technology award for foreign students coming to the U.S. (After 3 years, the host Canadian university is expected to cover the remaining expenses toward the completion of the PhD.)
The application deadline is Nov. 15, 2011 for PhD programs beginning fall 2012.
Participating Canadian universities are: McGill University, Université de Montéal, University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, and the University of Waterloo.
Applicants must be citizens of the U.S., must submit their Graduate Record Examination scores before December 31, 2011, and must have completed an undergraduate degree before August 1, 2012. Applicants must be proficient in English and/or French.
Eligible fields of study/research include:
Please note that students who have already begun a PhD program, or will begin in 2011-12, are not eligible to apply. Please see the program website and application materials for complete information and eligibility requirements:http://www.fulbright.ca/
Please also note that this Fulbright Canada STEM Award program is separate and distinct from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program (http://us.fulbrightonline.

Subject: Amazon adds writing skills to the technical interview
I’m visiting a good friend a UW CSE alumnae, Software Engineer at
Amazon) and she gave me an interesting tidbit on some new interview
practices they’re just starting for SDEs… she says they’ll soon be
requiring applicants to provide a *writing sample* as part of their
interview. The writing sample will be one page, on a typical interview
personality question (“Describe a time where you worked with someone
who was uncooperative”… etc), due two days before the interview.
I now have a little more ground to tell the undergrads I talk to to
quit whining when they talk about humanities and English classes…
😉
