Intel facebook competition

Dec. 13th deadline is coming up.

We are excited to tell you about Intel’s programs to promote entrepreneurship and innovation among young people and how your students can participate.

Intel is announcing Intel Innovators a US competition on Facebook to inspire, discover and award the best game-changing ideas.   This program is targeted at young people 18-24 years old.  Intel has gathered a panel of start-up and technology experts to evaluate submissions and select the most promising ideas. The ideas with the most Facebook votes will get a shot at winning up to $100,000.  An overview of the Intel Innovators contest along with the Submission Guidelines and FAQ can be found on here:  www.intelinnovators.com  Submissions begin November 7th with the program officially launching on December 1st.

These programs are just two of the many ways Intel is sponsoring innovation and entrepreneurship.  We also offer curriculum, workshops and leadership symposiums.  To find out more about Intel’s entrepreneurship programs, go to:  http://www.intel.com/about/corporateresponsibility/education/highered/entrepreneurship.htm

We deeply appreciate your help in getting the word out to your students.

To: cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu, cs-grads@cs.washington.edu
Cc: Crystal Eney <ceney@cs.washington.edu>, Ed Lazowska <lazowska@cs.washington.edu>Hello,

Thanks to all who responded to my request for speakers in early
January — I still need more!

December 5-9 is Computer Science Education Week
(http://www.csedweek.org/) and we have a couple of schools who have
requested speakers to get their students excited about CS at UW and
beyond.  I need a few volunteers who can demo a cool project, talk
about how they got into computer science and get students thinking
like computer scientists.

Please respond if you have interest and availability Dec 5-9 some time
between 7:30am and 2:30pm.

Thanks,

Hélène.

Speakers for high school (early January)

From: Helene Martin <ln@cs.washington.edu>
Hello,

I’m (sort of) new around these parts and am working with Stuart and Marty on our intro courses.  I’m also hoping to help coordinate some of our K-12 outreach efforts — middle and high school is a great time to get kids hooked on computer science!  I have several local computer science classes asking for speakers the weeks of Jan 9th, 16th, and 23rd and would love to send some of you out to share what gets you excited about computer science.

Ideally, we’d send out a graduate student and an undergraduate student to share a bit about their research, course projects and experience at UW.  The perfect presentation would include demos, some kind of activity (design exercise, thought experiment…) and lots of energy!

Please respond to me directly if you have some interest in participating in these kinds of efforts.  I’d like brief answers to these questions:
– why are you excited about CS:
– what could you demo:
– what activities could you do with students (ok if you don’t have any in mind):

Once I get a feel for interest, I’ll set up some time to discuss common information we’ll want all students to get, talking to teenagers, ideas for activities, and general logistics.  Even if you’re not around early Jan, please respond if you have any interest in this kind of work.  We are building a UW CSE Outreach Army.

Thanks!

Hélène.

Wii/Xbox360 games for Fallfest

Hey everybody!

Fall fest is in a couple hours! It starts at 6pm tonight in the atrium. Since it is your party, people should bring Wii and Xbox 360 games that they want to play. Label your game cases with your name to make sure they don’t get lost.

Samasource info session Monday – fight poverty in your next internship

Samasource Information Session
samasource.org
Date: Monday, Nov 21, 2011
Time: 5:30pm – 7:30pm
Location: UW Career Center (LOBBY) 134 Mary Gates, Seattle Campus
Speaker: Martin Anderson, VP of Engineering
Samasource is a social enterprise based in San Francisco that connects people living in poverty to dignified work via the Internet.
We created a technology platform that distributes microwork to centers around the world.  Microwork is a new way to fight poverty by enabling capable, marginalized people to complete digital tasks in some of the world’s poorest places. Our model provides direct income to thousands of people at a fraction of the cost of traditional aid programs and equips them with skills to succeed in the new economy.
We’re looking for students and graduates interested in joining our engineering associate program. The associate program starts with a 10-week stipend internship period where a candidate will be introduced to our platform and pair with a senior engineer to build and deploy new features.  Upon successfully completing the internship, the software engineer will gain increased responsibility over feature specification and implementation, helping us grow our platform and develop innovative solutions to ICTD problems like these:
– Distributed, collaborative education and training
– Remote, rural content delivery over high latency networks
– Intelligent, automated task allocation and adaptive workflow
– Mobile payments and messaging
We are a small, growing, dynamic team committed to changing the world with an innovative business model. To get a quick overview of what we do, watch this 50 second video on YouTube of two of our workers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96bSBNRCSoQ
