SAC Donation Drive

Welcome back, CSE! We know this quarter will challenge you academically, so the Student Advisory Council invites you to take part in a feel-good event that will benefit a part of our local community who would truly appreciate your help.

The SAC will be hosting a donation drive to benefit Mary’s Place, an inclusive environment which provides shelter and services to support women, children, and families on their journey out of homelessness.

Why donate? Mary’s Place puts it simply: because no one’s child should sleep outside.

How can you help? We are looking for all types of essential items, including:

Toiletries – shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste and toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, soap, lip balm, hair brushes and combs, pain relievers, band aids

Baby – diapers in larger sizes (4, 5, 6), baby wipes

Food – oatmeal packets, boxes of cereal, individually packaged kids snacks

Clothing – women, men, children and infant clothing, bras and underwear

Art Supplies

Blankets

You can also find this list on our posters located throughout the CSE and CSE2 buildings.

Bring your items for donation to the CSE2 Ugrad Commons or to the ACM Lounge from 9-5 between now through April 29.

The SAC knows you are all doing great things as CSE students, so we invite you to take this opportunity to do something amazing for your community!

The speaker will be Michael Petrochuk (https://www.linkedin.com/in/petrochukm/), CTO of WellSaid Labs. Michael is a recent UW undergrad and will speak to the process and limitations of the entrepreneurial ecosystem on campus and in the department.

SASE Research Panel

Interested in knowing what STEM research at UW entails? Want to learn more about getting into research? Come to the Society of Asian Scientists & Engineers (SASE) Research Panel to get some useful “hot research tips” from upperclassmen!

What will be covered:
-Finding the right research for you
-How to approach professors/Finding research
-Academic and personal advice
-Other resources and so much more!

The panel will begin with a general Q&A between the MC and the panelists and you’ll be free to speak with any upperclassman & ask them questions at the end. Light refreshments (cookies, chips, drinks) will be provided & everyone is welcome to attend, so please invite your friends!

Title: Decolonising Artificial Intelligence? the arc of the new cybernetics

Abstract:

The idea of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was codified at a conference in the American summer of 1956. It was summarised to mean the attempts to “make machines use language, form abstractions and concepts, solve the kinds of problems now reserved for humans, and improve themselves.” That initial formulation, a product of a particular time and place, has framed a great deal of research ever since. But where did that formulation come from and what histories are embedded within it and erased by it and why does might it matter?  In this talk, Professor Genevieve Bell, will explore the ways in which AI, and our imaginings of it, could be subject to an anthropological intervention.

Bio:

Genevieve is the Director of the 3A Institute (3Ai), Florence Violet McKenzie Chair, and a Distinguished Professor at the Australian National University (ANU) as well as a Vice President and Senior Fellow at Intel Corporation. She is a cultural anthropologist, technologist and futurist best known for her work at the intersection of cultural practice and technology development.

Genevieve joined the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science in February 2017, after having spent the past 18 years in Silicon Valley helping guide Intel’s product development by developing the company’s social science and design research capabilities.

Genevieve established the 3A Institute in September 2017 at the ANU in collaboration with CSIRO’s Data61, with the mission of building a new applied science around the management of artificial intelligence, data, technology and their impact on humanity. The 3Ai is leading the discussion around the future of artificial intelligence (AI) the launch of the world’s first applied science in February 2019. This applied science is focusing on a set of critical questions around autonomy, agency and assurance and how to manage a world of AI, data, technology and its impact on humanity.  

Genevieve is the inaugural appointee to the Florence Violet McKenzie Chair at the ANU, named in honour Australia’s first female electrical engineer, which promotes the inclusive use of technology in society. She also presented the highly acclaimed ABC Boyer Lectures for 2017, in which she investigated what it means to be human, and Australian, in a digital world.

In 2018, Bell was appointed Non-Executive Director of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia Board, she became a member of the Prime Minister’s National Science and Technology Council, and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE).

Genevieve completed her PhD in cultural anthropology at Stanford University in 1998.Hosted by the University of Washington Computational Neuroscience Center

UW Speaking Center

Want to get public speaking practice? Develop your technical and interpersonal skills?

At the UW Speaking Center in the Department of Communication, students can book 20-min appointments online with trained public speaking tutors, where tutors help them arrange, style, and perform their pieces. They have worked with undergrads on class presentations to PhD’s on research fair presentations. They also have had several CSE students become public speaking tutors in the past.

Def Hacks: FinTech Hackathon at Microsoft HQ

The Seattle team at Def Hacks (defhacks.io) is hosting the third annual 24-hour hackathon at Microsoft HQ on April 13th-14th.

The hackathon is an MLH Member Event, and has a strong emphasis on FinTech as Even (evenfinancial.com) is a sponsor and co-host. We will have mentors and recruiters from multiple companies, free meals and snacks, lots of swag, and over $2,000 in prizes!

Impact++ & Dubhacks Present: Impact Innovation Challenge

Hey Everyone!

Do you want to apply your skills and innovate around some of the most challenging problems faced by our community today?

Impact++, along with Dubhacks, is hosting the first Impact Innovation Challenge on Saturday, May 4, 2019. This is a hackathon-style event addressing homelessness & housing and health & safety in Seattle by leveraging technology for social good. Individuals from all backgrounds and fields of interest are encouraged to participate!

We are hosting mentors from Vulcan, Microsoft, Cisco, NEO Tracker, and Giving Tech Labs, as well as highly experienced and reputed speakers and judges, so as to maximize the potential impact of your ideas and solutions.

This event is a springboard for ideas and long-term projects focused on public-interest technology. To that end, Impact++ will provide resources such as mentorship and networking opportunities to the participants that continue with their projects after the event.

Student Advisory Council and ACM-W Vulnerability Panel Discussion

Beneath the Surface: a panel discussion on failure and vulnerability–Join SAC and ACM-W for an evening of open and honest conversation surrounding failure and vulnerability.  

You’ve probably heard multiple times that failure is a great opportunity and it isn’t something to be afraid or ashamed of.  However, CSE has developed a culture of being extremely ambitious, and handling failure among a community of such high-performing peers is particularly difficult.  Our high-achieving community can lead to lots of us feeling inadequate and that we don’t belong here. Often in CSE we overhear people talking about their accomplishments, but rarely do we talk about our experiences with failure (and, shocking as it may be, every single one of us has failed at some point).  

We hope to decrease the stigma our department faces regarding failure and vulnerability through a panel of highly respected people and through small group discussions.  We also hope that you will reflect on your own relationships with failure and vulnerability in this event. By RSVPing you are agreeing that you can stay for the duration of the event.  As this is a discussion-based event, it is crucial that if you attend, you stay the entire time.  Open to all CSE students.
