Invitation: Prospective Grad Student Meetup & Panel

Hi CSE Undergrads!

Are you planning on applying to grad school soon? Even if you’re just thinking about applying in the future, it can really help to know other people who are going through the same process.  Please join us for a panel and informal meetup on Thursday November 8th from 4-5pm in CSE 691 (Gates Commons).
We’ll provide a meeting space, snacks, and a panel of graduate students who have successfully navigated the application process and want to share their advice for success.  You’ll have time to hear their stories, ask them questions, and meet other students who can share tips, proofread essays, network, etc. Our graduate advisor, Lindsay Michimoto, will also be present to help answer your questions.
For those of you who already said you were interested and helped me choose a time, I really appreciate your feedback! However, please still officially RSVP so I can get a headcount. If you can only make it to half of the meeting because of class, that’s fine!  Come as long as you can. If you can’t make this event at all but are still interested in meeting people, please RSVP “no” at the link above and I’ll try to connect you with undergrad/grad students who were there.
Thanks! Please email me with any questions.

Master’s Degree in Journalism & Computer Science at Columbia University

Columbia is taking applications now for their new Dual Master’s program.  From the brochure:

The program offers the highest caliber of computer science and
journalism training at Columbia University. Faculty members from
both schools advise students and work together, in close
collaboration to ensure that the courses are complementary. In
addition to taking classes offered at the Journalism and
Engineering schools, students attend a seminar and workshop
designed specifically for the dual-degree program. The seminar
teaches students about the impact of computing on journalism, the
emerging role of citizens in the news process, the influence of
social media, and the changing business models that will support
newsgathering.

Research Opportunity with the Psychology Department

The Psych Department is looking for a student with an interest in CS and Psych to participate in undergraduate research. Interested students should be able to commit at least 6 hours per week for 3 quarters. You’d most likely register under PSYCH 499 (CR/NC).

We are looking for a student who is proficient with computers to help us with data analysis on a number of projects related to cancer and cognition. Most of our projects involve analyzing data from computer programs. We would like a student knowledgeable in computer programming to help us with this data analysis. Most of our tasks use E-Prime, so knowledge of E-Prime is preferred. In addition, qualified student would have knowledge of computer language and some experience in programming. Psych 209 is preferred, but not required. This is a great opportunity for a psychology student looking to get involved in the computerized aspects of psychology research. E-Prime is widely used in psychological research, so an understanding of this software would be extremely beneficial to the student. In addition, the student will become very knowledgeable about data analysis, especially analysis of data from computerized tasks. PLEASE NOTE: We work out of the Seattle VA and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Therefore, the student would be required to have reliable transportation to both of these campuses.
