Hey CSE majors! We have a number of K-12 student groups visiting during May, and would love your assistance in showcasing the wonders of CSE. Perhaps you have a fabulous research or Capstone project you can demo? Please look through the following activities and email your advisers about which you’re available to help with. 🙂
Northshore Middle-School Women in Science, Math, Engineering
May 1, 10am – noon
What we need: One half-hour activity, repeated three times for groups of 20 students. A research demo, fabulous presentation would be great!
* We also need a thirty-minute activity that could happen just once, from 10-10:30. If you don’t have a demo or activity but want to help, you could give a brief tour for this.
TEC Access Middle School (a STEM-focused school)
May 7
What: A 30-minute to 1-hour activity presented twice, preferably something related to robotics.
Evergreen High School
When: May 20th, Sometime between 9-1
What: One 30-45 minute demo for group of 15-20 high school students (upperclassmen)
Thoreau Elementary School
When May 28th 8-9AM (yes, it’s early)
What: Two one-hour or 30-minute activities, presented twice, for 6th-graders (preferably something interactive).
If you don’t have any specific ideas but still want to help, email and we may be able to use you! Feel free to volunteer with friends to present something together, or suggest these opportunities to your grad student and faculty research advisers.

Disability Resources for Students is looking for a responsible individual who is interested in helping out a fellow student with a disability. We need a volunteer who is available to scribe for a CSE final exam at our office in Schmitz Hall. Scribing is an accommodation provided to students who cannot write or cannot do so efficiently enough to complete an exam. It simply involves writing down the answers to an exam as the student gives them to you verbally. In certain cases, you may also be asked to read the questions aloud to the student.
The DRS office is requesting CSE majors for this because our specific need this quarter is for CSE 417. For any science exam, it is very helpful for the scribe to be familiar with the material being tested. They are more than happy to write a letter of recommendation for employment or graduate school applications for our volunteers. Please consider the personal rewards of volunteering and, if you’re interested, contact Drew Britten (contact info below).

Math and Science Celebration
at the
Pacific Science Center
Thursday, January 15th, 2009
8:30-1:30 pm
450-fourth and fifth graders from five Seattle area elementary schools will attend the celebration. UW student volunteers will serve as tour guides for the event, leading groups of children through the PSC exhibits and a laser show. UW student volunteers also play the role of mentor to young children who may not see college in their future. The school children will also hear a motivational presentation from a professional & student who will speak about the importance of education, overcoming barriers as well as an array of opportunities that exist in math science, technology and engineering.
The event, held each January, honors the work and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Math and Science Celebration was founded by Dr. Constance Rice in 1992. The program is sponsored by Microsoft and coordinated by Seattle Public Schools, Engineering Advising & Diversity Center, and the Pacific Science Center.

Bryant Science Fair Mentor- Volunteer Opportunity- Jan-March 2009
Share your enthusiasm for science by serving as a Science Fair mentor for students at Bryant Elementary School located in NE Seattle near the University of Washington .
Mentors work with a group of 4-5 students, (4th and 5th graders) to design and carry out their scientific investigations. The role of the mentor is to ask questions and guide the group in its student-driven investigation. The mentor brings ideas and perspective to aid students in the development of manageable scientific experiments and interpretation of results. With guidance from the mentor, students prepare posters displaying their results and conclusions which will be exhibited at the Science Fair Poster Exhibition.
This is a fantastic leadership opportunity to lead a team through a project with similar group dynamics of adult research or work teams.
There will be an orientation in early January ( tba) for all Science Fair Mentors led by our Science Fair Coordinator, Lizbeth Seebacher. The Science Fair Coordinator, Bryant 4th/5th grade teachers and parent volunteers provide additional support to our Science Fair Mentors.
Commitment: 1.5 hours per week for 9-10 weeks Time:1-2:30 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to help physics, chemistry, genetics, and biology teachers for a couple hours a week in their labs at Garfield HS. Your assistance is needed to help students during the lab, answer questions and help them interpret results. The lab days are Wednesdays and Thursdays and run 7:40-9:30 am, 9:50-11:40 am, or 12:20-2:15 pm. Garfield is located at 400 23rd Ave, Seattle, WA 98122. (more…)
