Interested in CSE outreach to high school or middle school? New 1 credit course starting next week

Course will begin next week.

As part of our recruiting and outreach efforts, we’re going to offer a 1-credit course this quarter in which students will develop a CSE “Roadshow.” This roadshow will be a fun, interactive presentation that students can later take to local middle schools and high schools, to get more young students excited about UW CSE.

In the 1-credit course this winter, undergraduate and graduate students explore how other universities reach out to middle and high schools, and then work in small groups to develop our own CSE roadshow. As a team, we’ll make sure these roadshows are fun and easy to present. They’ll use hands-on activities and examples of research to show how interesting, creative, and fun CSE can be.

We will offer the course again in the spring quarter and you will have an opportunity to “test drive” and tweak the presentations you create by visiting local high schools and presenting to their students.   During this spring offering of the course, we’ll provide training so students feel comfortable presenting this roadshow, in pairs, at local schools.  Although we hope many of the students from this winter course will continue in spring quarter, course participants are not required to give presentations in spring (however winter students will be given some priority for presentations). Similarly, if you are more interested in presenting to local high schools than creating the presentations, you may want to take the spring offering of the course as we will not require winter quarter participation for people who hope to present the roadshow.

No presentation or outreach experience required! We just need enthusiasm for CSE.

If you would like to join this 1-credit course this winter, please fill out this catalyst survey: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/cseadv/121605

The class meeting time will be Wednesday 330-420PM starting Wed Jan. 19th. If you would like to participate, but don’t need the credit, just tell us that on the survey.
Additionally, if you can’t make this time but are interested in helping this quarter as we prepare the road show, please also fill out the catalyst.

The course co-instructors will be Franzi Roesner and Crystal Eney with help from many others. Please email Franzi at franzi@cs.washington.edu if you have questions.

We will waive the $20 late-registration fee when we add you to this course.

CSE Outreach Survey

Hey all,

The department is gearing up to provide more CSE specific outreach opportunities for CSE undergraduates.  Committees are meeting to push forward a variety of outreach opportunities, but they need your help!  Please fill out this catalyst survey right now, before you forget, if you are at all interested in spreading the joy of CSE to the world and getting involved in the community.

https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/cseadv/114529

There is absolutely no binding commitment by filling out the survey, we are just looking to gather general information about what CSE and non-CSE outreach you have done in the past.  Try to fill out the survey before noon, Monday, October 25th, but sooner is always better than later!  =)

Thanks!

Volunteer web design opportunity: non-profit needs site redesign

If you’re interested in web design and want to help a non-profit (or just want a place to use those new skills from 190M), check out this posting.

“I’m currently working for a non-profit organization (FRAEC – see www.fraec.org) and we’re currently looking for someone who would be willing to help us redesign the website as a type of internship or opportunity to build a portfolio.  Is this an opportunity that could be posted somewhere in either the the CSE or elsewhere?  I’m thinking that this might be a good opportunity for Jr or Sr – level undergrads or perhaps Graduate students as well.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.  I can be reached at 206-915-3294.

Thank You,

Need a volunteer for a quick visit with a student on Saturday

If you will be on campus this Saturday (7/31) and willing to talk with a new CSE major briefly, please email me.

This newly-admitted student is only available to visit UW on the weekend, when the Allen Center is locked and no one is around to answer questions. He’s a post-baccalaureate student, so it could be helpful for him to talk with another post-bac or a transfer student — but feel free to volunteer even if you started at UW as a freshman. 🙂

If you’re planning to be in the building, we’d greatly appreciate your help! I will connect you with him, and you can work out the time.

Tour guides needed for freshmen orientation (7/15 and 7/22)

Hey ugrads! We need a few volunteers to give 20-minute CSE building tours for Freshmen Orientation on July 15 and July 22. The tours will be 3-3:45 (you’ll give the same tour twice).

These are the “Special Interest” orientation groups who have specifically selected to attend a CSE-centric session, so they’ll be excited to meet a real CSE major.  🙂  Some of the students will be Direct Admits, but many will still be deciding on a major.

No experience necessary. Email me if you’re interested!
