Dear Potential Saturday Computing Volunteers,

The Saturday Computing Experience is an 8 week workshop for deaf and
hard of hearing high school students.  It starts on April 6th and ends
on June 1st, skipping the Memorial Day weekend.  It runs from 9:30 to
noon except on the final day when students showcase their projects to
their family and friends.  There is an orientation the evening of
April 3rd, Wednesday, from 6 to 7:30.

http://adhhc.cs.washington.edu/SCE.php

This year we will be doing Processing, modeled after the DawgBytes
camps that were done here last summer. We may be able to link up
Processing with Android phones too.

http://processing.org/

We are looking for a few volunteers to help with one-on-one mentoring
with the students.  It is not necessary to know sign language,
although it would be helpful.  We will have interpreters in the room
to assist with communication. To volunteer please sign up at the
following catalyst site.

[UW Policy] Update on Initiative 502 – Use and Possession of Marijuana

From: Academic Personnel and UW Human Resources
[mailto:uwhr@u.washington.edu]
Sent: Friday, December 07, 2012 12:27 AM
Subject: [UW Policy] Update on Initiative 502 – Use and Possession of
Marijuana

This message is being sent to all Faculty and Staff with approval from the
Office of the Vice President for Human Resources

Dear UW employees,

As most of you undoubtedly know, effective December 6, 2012, State
Initiative 502 (I-502) legalizes the possession of a small quantity of
marijuana by those 21 and over in Washington state. I-502 also revises the
laws regarding marijuana regulation and taxation, and the criminal and
civil penalties for the production, distribution, and possession of
marijuana.
However,  I-502 continues to make it unlawful for anyone, whatever their
age, to open a package containing marijuana or consume marijuana in a
public place.

Notwithstanding I-502’s passage, it is critically important for UW
employees to understand that it is still a federal crime to possess and
use even small amounts of marijuana on or in any University facilities or
vehicles.
Further, as a recipient of federal funds, the UW must comply with the Safe
& Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and the Drug-Free Workplace Act
which require that the UW maintain a drug-free campus. Failure to comply
with federal laws and regulations on marijuana possession and use on
campus jeopardizes the UW’s continued receipt of federal funds.

Accordingly, the passage of I-502 will not change the UW policies that
prohibit the production, distribution, possession, or use of marijuana on
University property or during University-sponsored activities. Violating
these policies may lead to sanctions under the applicable general code of
conduct or the University rules relating to your particular employment
status.

Also, under Federal regulations a number of University employees are
subject to drug and alcohol testing because of the type of work they
perform.
Testing positive for marijuana is a violation of these regulations and
will remain grounds for employment sanctions including termination, even
if the marijuana use occurred outside of work hours and otherwise in
accordance with state law.

Visit http://www.uw.edu/admin/rules/policies/APS/13.07 to view the
University’s Drug & Alcohol Abuse Policy.

The resources listed below are available to assist employees who feel that
marijuana is causing problems either for themselves or their family
members.

Tomorrow: You’re Invited! TEDxWomen Screening @ UW

TEDxWomen is coming to the University of Washington — and you are invited!

UW Women in Informatics, Microsoft Women of Research, and Women In Bio Seattle Metro have joined forces to bring the passion, spirit and energy that is TEDxWomen to the University of Washington.  Join us on December 1, 2012, from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm, for rich and stimulating conversation and exchange of ideas at this one-day global event.

We are gathering together a group of 185 accomplished, curious, TED-type thinkers and doers to meet, engage and celebrate at our 2012 TEDxWomen event, TEDxSouthLakeUnionWomen.  This year’s theme for TEDxWomen is “The Space Between”, and we will consider the space between what we see and what is true, and the space between our intellectual and emotional intelligence, and more.

Cynthia Adkins, life sciences and technology attorney, and President, Seattle Metro chapter of Women In BioRane Johnson the Education and Scholarly Communication Principal Director at Microsoft Research Connections, and myself are extending this personal invitation to you: students and faculty of the UW with a focus in engineering and technology. Take part in this challenging, inspiring and timely conversation, where you can cross-fertilize, draw inspiration, and share your personal and professional insights and experiences.  It will give you an opportunity to meet women changing the world in Puget Sound and have the opportunity to be part of activities to grow more women in Science Technology Engineering and Math careers in the region.

At our event, we will watch via livestream TEDxWomen speakers from Washington DC, and we will also feature local speakers, including Katie Davis, Assistant Professor at The University of Washington Information School, and Munmun De Choudhury, Microsoft Researcher.

Half of the seats are reserved for UW registrants meaning the other half will be filled by professionals from Microsoft Research and Women in Bio so there will be plenty of networking opportunities. This is a free event and we’ll even be providing breakfast and lunch! If you would like to attend, please either RSVP to me via reply email and I will have you registered, or sign-up at tedxwinfo.eventbrite.com . (password to see the event page is “WINFO”). We will also be providing a private screening of Ms. Newsom’s film, “Miss Representation”, immediately following the regular TEDxWomen sessions.  It’s a 90-minute documentary about the portrayal of women and girls in the media, and it’s a very powerful, important (and disturbing) film.  http://www.missrepresentation.org/  more details to come prior to the event.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Thank you. Hope to see you very soon!
