— Note to students on AIT Budapest —

I am writing to encourage you to consider an extraordinary study abroad program, AIT Budapest, for students interested in computing, design, computational biology, and IT entrepreneurship.

The AIT program has a first-rate faculty including professors such as Erno Rubik (inventor of the Rubik’s Cube and recent recipient of the U.S. Outstanding Contributions to Science Education Award), an innovative curriculum including courses such as “Computer Vision for Digital Postproduction” taught by faculty affiliates from Colorfront Studios (recent recipients of an Academy Award for technical contributions), and a guest lecture series that brings prominent speakers to campus.

All classes are conducted in English on AIT’s lovely campus on the banks of the Danube River.  Students live in vibrant neighborhoods of Budapest and have ample opportunities to interact with Hungarian students and explore Hungary and the region.

AIT is small and friendly, with typical class sizes of 5-15 students.  Recent U.S. AIT students have come from Harvey Mudd College, Pomona College, Princeton University, the University of Washington, Mt. Holyoke, Skidmore College, among others.  The program also includes a small number of Hungarian students.

Applications for Spring 2012 are due by November 15.  Applications for Fall 2012 are due April 15.

The AIT website and application materials are available at:

www.ait-budapest.com

Prof. Ran Libeskind-Hadas (ran@cs.hmc.edu) and Prof. Michael Orrison (orrison@math.hmc.edu) at Harvey Mudd College are serving as the North American Co-Directors for AIT and are happy to answer any questions that you might have and/or put you in touch with current and former AIT students so that you can get their impressions directly.

Subject: new Fulbright Canada STEM Awards funding PhD programs in Canada
To: Robin Chang <robinc@u.washington.edu>
Cc: Mona <mpitre@uw.edu>, helene@uw.edu, megray@uw.edu

Dear STEM advisers,

Just a quick message to let you know about a new scholarship program for undergraduates, recent graduates or Master’s students who plan to pursue a PhD in a STEM field and would be interested in attending one of Canada’s top-ranked research institutions. Please share with your interested students and colleagues.

The Fulbright Canada STEM Award is a new initiative of the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the U.S. (Fulbright Canada), in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada and six of Canada’s leading research universities. The award, which is a three year award valued at around $120,000 (tuition, fees, and an annual stipend of $20,000), is the counterpart to Fulbright’s International Science and Technology award for foreign students coming to the U.S. (After 3 years, the host Canadian university is expected to cover the remaining expenses toward the completion of the PhD.)

The application deadline is Nov. 15, 2011 for PhD programs beginning fall 2012.

Participating Canadian universities are: McGill University, Université de Montéal, University of Alberta, University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, and the University of Waterloo.

Applicants must be citizens of the U.S., must submit their Graduate Record Examination scores before December 31, 2011, and must have completed an undergraduate degree before August 1, 2012.  Applicants must be proficient in English and/or French.

Eligible fields of study/research include:

  • Aeronautics and Aeronautical Engineering
  • Agriculture (theoretical or research-based focus only)
  • Astronomy/Planetary Sciences
  • Biology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Energy
  • Engineering (aerospace, electrical, chemical, civil, industrial, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum)
  • Environmental Science/Engineering
  • Geology/Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
  • Information Sciences/Engineering (engineering focus only; business-focused study is not eligible)
  • Materials Science/Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Neuroscience
  • Oceanography
  • Physics
  • Public Health (biostatistics or epidemiology)

Please note that students who have already begun a PhD program, or will begin in 2011-12, are not eligible to apply. Please see the program website and application materials for complete information and eligibility requirements:http://www.fulbright.ca/programs/american-students/STEM_program.html.

Please also note that this Fulbright Canada STEM Award program is separate and distinct from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program (http://us.fulbrightonline.org/home.html). Students are welcome to apply for both programs, should that fit their plans. The UW’s Fulbright U.S. Student Program campus application deadline is Sept. 14, 2011. Undergrads or recent Bachelor’s alums can contact me with questions. Grad students or recent Master’s alums can contact Helene Obradovich (helene@uw.edu) or Marilyn Gray (megray@uw.edu) with questions.

Thanks,

Upcoming CSE Study Abroad Info Session

Hi all,

Next week we’re going to have an informational meeting for our departmental study abroad programs.

KTH, ETH, & Saarland Info Session
Friday, February 4th
3:30-4:30p.m.
CSE 303

Please send me a quick email RSVP if you plan to attend. If you can’t make it to the session but would like to be considered for these programs, let me know that by email as well.

Students who are interested studying abroad at these schools during the 2011-2012 academic year should definitely plan to attend, but the session is also appropriate for those of you who are thinking about study abroad in future years.

Professors Tom Anderson and Mike Ernst will be at the session to talk about ETH, KTH, and Saarland universities, and we hope to have students currently here on exchange from these schools attend for additional insight and to help answer your questions. Please note: This year was our first sending a student to Saarland, and we hope we will be able to continue the program, but I’m currently working with Saarland on this. I hope to have more details at the session on Friday.

Shortly after the meeting, the application for the CSE study abroad programs will go online at  http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/exchanges.html.

National Student Exchange

For those of you who have not heard of this program, it’s like foreign exchange, but with a University within the United States.

Subject: [Advisers] National Student Exchange!
To: advisers@u.washington.edu

Hi All –
Please distribute as you see fit. Thanks!

I am writing to invite you to consider the National Student Exchange (NSE). NSE gives you an opportunity to experience a different area with its unique cultural and academic opportunities. Since NSE’s beginning in 1968, more than 94,000 students have had the opportunity to participate in NSE, giving them the opportunity to:

·     broaden their personal and educational perspectives
·     experience new cultures
·     explore new areas of study
·     learn from different professors
·     access new courses
·     experience personal growth
·     meet new people
·     make new friends
·     live in a different area
·     investigate graduate schools
·     seek future employment

Many returning UW students describe NSE as a life-changing experience which has made them more independent, self-confident and resourceful; expanded their risk-taking capabilities; and helped them better define their academic and career objectives. Students who have been on exchange return to UW with lasting friendships formed with students from all over the country.

Prior to exchange, you will develop a written agreement to ensure that the work you satisfactorily complete on exchange will count toward your degree program here. NSE operates with tuition reciprocity (tuition paid to our campus or at the in-state rates of the host campus) and federal financial aid portability. Your nomination for participation will be done by NSE @ UW, with selection by the host campus being completed in March. With placement rates of 97 percent, our students can generally find a location to meet both their academic and personal objectives.

Think about it. Visit http://www.nse.org. Talk with your parents, adviser, and professors about this exciting opportunity. Then, plan to attend one of our information sessions where we will explain the details of the program, provide brochures, outline application procedures, and answer all of your questions. The session schedule is:

Friday January 7, 1:00 – 2:00 MGH 224
Tuesday January 11, 12:30 – 1:30 MGH 224
Wednesday January 12, 3:00 – 4:00 MGH 224
Thursday January 20, 1:30 – 2:30 MGH 136
Tuesday January 25, 12:30 – 1:30 MGH 224
Friday January 28, 10:30 – 11:30 MGH 224
Monday January 31, 3:30 – 4:30 MGH 224
Friday February 4, 10:30 – 11:30 MGH 224

Applications for next year’s exchanges are due by February 4th, with a space-available deadline until Feb. 18th.

I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity. I look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,
Clay

Student Exchange Day–Thursday, November 18th

Hi all,

Those of you interested in UW exchange programs may want to check out Student Exchange Day in Mary Gates Hall tomorrow. CSE departmental exchanges aren’t part of this, but there are numerous exchange opportunities at UW, so this could be a good way to learn more about your options. Details below.

–Megan

Student Exchange Day–Thursday, November 18, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Mary Gates Hall Commons

The Office of International Programs and Exchanges and the National Student Exchange (NSE) program have created a Student Exchange Day event for UW students to explore their options for studying for a semester or year at one of our partner institutions.  A wide array of international and U.S. options will be presented.

Many of these exchanges will be represented by exchange students from our partner universities who are studying at UW this quarter which provides a unique opportunity for students to speak directly with other students.  Staff from International Programs and Exchanges and the NSE program will also be available to answer questions about program options and funding.
