Subject: [Receptionist] [Cs-staff] UWPD in the building on Sunday, March 18th
If you were here on Sunday, you got to see UWPD in action….they responded to a call from a building occupant about possible gun shots heard (not a false call). They arrived quickly, and searched CSE along with EE and Sylvan Grove. They didn’t find any evidence of a gun discharged, and there wasn’t anything out of place (thankfully).
We haven’t determined what made the noise- if anybody was working on or near the 3rd floor and has information, please let me know.

ChronoZoom is VERY cool!
I wanted to share with you the launch of ChronoZoom yesterday. As I have shared with many of you before, ChronoZoom is an open-source cloud service community project dedicated to visualizing the history of everything. Big History is the attempt to understand, in a unified, interdisciplinary way, the history of cosmos, Earth, life, and humanity. By using Big History as the story line, ChronoZoom seeks to bridge the gap between the humanities and sciences an enable all this information to be easily understandable and navigable.
Last night we officially launched at the opening of the NCCE conference. The blog has a hyperlink to share on facebook if you want to share on your community links. We have gotten a great response and a bunch of partners to begin working with us after launch. This is a free tool made by the academic community for the academic community with the support of Microsoft Research Connections. We hope you will share it with your teachers and students. We would love to hear their feedback, once they experience ChronoZoom, at the bottom right they will see Take the Survey. In this survey they will vote for features, help us with navigation and help us prioritize the next set of capabilities in the tool. We hope to have 500,000 responses by end of the summer to guide us in our development. To learn more about the tool and the partnerships please open the Blog link below. You will also find links to the tool, tutorial, user guide and lesson plans. We hope you enjoy the experience.

Good times Wednesday with the power outage! I’d like to thank everybody for being cooperative and understanding.
Briefly, I’ve been told that Seattle City Light had two workers at the power station which feeds UW. There was a blunder, and UW (among many customers) ended up without regular power and without emergency power.
Many have asked why the emergency pathway lighting did not work. This was a surprise to me as well. The electricians explained that the building has two electrical feeds- one for daily operations, and one for emergency power. Rarely do both feeds go down at the same time, but they did (I’ve heard a number indicating it has been upwards of 15 years since this has happened to campus). While our card readers are on battery backup, our emergency lights are not.
A few changes will be made, in case this happens again. Most importantly- two battery backup lights will be installed in the lower level, the area of our building without natural light. And, all offices will be issued a glow stick to be used in an emergency (not a rave). There will likely be a few other changes, but these two are quick and easy to implement, and we’re proceeding immediately.
If you have any concerns about this, or the building, please feel free to email me directly.

Dear CSE Students,
With the consent of Professor Levy (CSE Chair) and the department, I am conducting a NSF-funded research study entitled “Exploring the Undergraduate Experience in Computing Education.” I am seeking second-year students (or those who plan to graduate in Spring 2014) to participate.
Participation in the study is voluntary and would involve completing an in-person interview lasting for about an hour, scheduled at your convenience. All student participants will receive a $25 Amazon.com gift card for participating in the study, and may elect to continue with follow-up interviews in the next two academic years. If you are interested in participating, please respond to this email with your availability so that we can schedule a date and time for the interview. I will be on campus next week, March 5-9, and can meet during the day or early evenings.
Thank you in advance for your time and participation in this research project. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you should have any questions about the study.
Sincerely,
Dr. Laura Portnoi
Associate Professor
