Be sure to check this out!

https://catalyst.amazon.com/uw/

Amazon and the University of Washington are excited to launch Amazon Catalyst at the UW:
a new initiative to provide funding and mentorship for bold, globally impactful, disruptive projects proposed by members of the university community. Through this collaboration, Amazon and the University of Washington hope to nurture and expand the entrepreneurial ecosystem for all people in greater Seattle.

Amazon Catalyst’s goal is to help people develop solutions to key problems faced in the world today. Problems can be diverse, from computer security, to immigration, to climate change. Because issues like these are complex, solutions will come from many different fields and many different perspectives. Therefore, the grants are open to all disciplines, including the humanities, arts, social sciences, medicine, law, engineering, etc., and to all members of the UW community, including professors, undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs, nurses, librarians, staff members, and others. We want to enable people with a passion for invention to take an unconventional approach to a problem and develop that big idea.

Grants will be awarded for projects that take place over a period of several months to up to two years, and will range from $10,000 to $100,000 each with no overhead costs (100% of awarded funding goes to the applicants). Successful applicants will be called “Amazon Catalyst Fellows.” There are specific rules about the management of intellectual property developed from Amazon Catalyst projects (see the FAQ for more detail). Projects that show success in the grant period may have the option for follow-on support through continued collaboration with Amazon.

The Geoff Marcy situation

Subject: [cs-ugrads] The Geoff Marcy situation
To: Researchers <researchers@cs.washington.edu>, Staff <cs-staff@cs.washington.edu>, “cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu” <cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu>

Many of you will have been following press reports of the Geoff Marcy situation at UC Berkeley.

There’s an article in the New York Times that includes links to excellent letters issued earlier this week by the graduate student community and the postdoc community in Berkeley’s Astronomy Department:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/15/science/geoffrey-marcy-to-resign-from-berkeley-astronomy-department.html

These letters emphasize that there pretty clearly has been a pattern of tolerance and coverup of this sort of behavior at the level of the department, the school/college, and the university, going back a long way. That is, people were not unaware – however nothing was said, and nothing much was done.

Hopefully that’s not how things work at UW – and not how they will work anywhere in the future.

If anyone at UW were to ever make you feel uncomfortable, please report it immediately.

EE Research Study Needs participants Oct 5-9th

Hello,

My name is Edward Wang. I’m a graduate student in the Department of Electrical and Engineering at the University of Washington. I am part of a UW research team conducting a research project on blood constituent measurement on mobile phone. In particular, we are interested in obtaining blood constituent information including hemoglobin level, blood oxygenation level, blood perfusion, and pulse rate.

Testing consists of two type of tasks: measuring blood constituent using an off the shelf finger sensor Masimo Pronto-7 and placing your hand on a mobile phone inside a lighting controlled box, under 3 lighting conditions.. During each of the mobile phone tasks, we will take a photo plus a 30 second video while applying the on device flash on the mobile phone. The entire study will last around 30 minutes, including the pre/post-study briefing. You must be above 18 years of age to participate.

The goal of this research is to develop an algorithm to measure blood constituent using mobile phone with minimal extra hardware. This solution will make blood constituent monitoring a significantly easier task, which is essential for patients with chronic anemia or other hemalogic condition.

The study will take place in the UW CSE building from Oct 5-Oct 9. To ensure privacy, you will be given the opportunity to review your recordings and delete any sections you want.

If you choose to participate, you will be paid $10 as compensation for your time.

If you are interested in participating, or would like more information about the study, please contact us at ejaywang@uw.edu. Although we keep e-mails private, please note that we cannot ensure the confidentiality of information sent via e-mail.

Thank you for considering participation in our study.
