Engineering Co-op Program – info for students

Our Mission
The Engineering Cooperative Education Program (Co-Op) partners with industry to offer degree-related work experience for highly qualified, motivated students. Students gain practical training and professional experience while maintaining their full-time student status and increasing their competitiveness for that first job after graduation while employers have the opportunity to evaluate prospective future employees. Students completing a Co-Op job graduate with work experience and are more likely to have a job at graduation,  a shorter job-hunt period and have higher earning potential within 5 years of graduation.

What is Co-Op?
A Co-Op job is a paid engineering-related position working in industry. For work experience to qualify as a Co-Op job it must be a paid position that is 50% or more engineering related work and registered through the Co-Op program. Benefits of Co-Op include maintaining full-time student status while working full-time (but not attending classes) and paying only a small Co-Op fee instead of full tuition.  Co-Op jobs last 3, 6 or 9 months. Most Co-Op jobs are full-time and employers hire students to work at a variety of locations in the U.S. and abroad. There are several ways to find a Co-Op job, and our office is here to help.  All engineering and pre-engineering students have access to the Co-Op online job search tool, eRecruiting, which lists job openings, but students are encouraged to use ALL their resources to find a Co-Op job.

Eligibility Requirements
Full-time students pursuing engineering at the UW Seattle campus are eligible to participate in Co-Op.  F-1 Visa holders are also eligible through “Curricular Practical Training” (CPT).

If you are looking for a Co-Op position, try our eRecruiting online job search tool.  To qualify, students must meet the requirements listed below.  (If you have not yet met the requirements you can still search for jobs, but you will need to contact the Co-Op office to assist you in the application process.)
•    Completed at least one academic quarter at the UW to establish a UW gpa
•    Must return to campus for one quarter after completing the Co-Op job prior to graduation

(HCDE Majors only: Have completed Math 124 and Physics 114 OR Math 124 and Chemistry 120)

Benefits to Students
•    Graduate WITH engineering experience!
•    Gain professional skills not taught in the classroom.
•    Average Co-Op salary is over $18 per hour
•    Access to current Co-Op job postings from employers hiring students year-round

Volunteer web design opportunity: non-profit needs site redesign

If you’re interested in web design and want to help a non-profit (or just want a place to use those new skills from 190M), check out this posting.

“I’m currently working for a non-profit organization (FRAEC – see www.fraec.org) and we’re currently looking for someone who would be willing to help us redesign the website as a type of internship or opportunity to build a portfolio.  Is this an opportunity that could be posted somewhere in either the the CSE or elsewhere?  I’m thinking that this might be a good opportunity for Jr or Sr – level undergrads or perhaps Graduate students as well.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.  I can be reached at 206-915-3294.

Thank You,

Gayle Laakmann
“Cracking the Technical Interview: Advice for Programmers”

Abstract:
Computer Science interviews are a different breed from other interviews and, as such, require specialized  skills and techniques.  Cracking the Technical Interview will teach you how to prepare for technical interviews, what top companies like Google and Microsoft really look for, and how to tackle the toughest programming and algorithm problems.  This talk will include stories from the speaker’s extensive interviewing experience as well as a live “demo” of how  to tackle a technical problem.
Bio

Gayle Laakmann is the founder and CEO of CareerCup.com and the author of “Cracking the Technical Interview” (http://www.careercup.com/book). Career Cup is the leading source of technical interview preparation and provides a free forum with 3000+ technical interview questions, a book, a video, and mock interviews.  Gayle has worked for Google, Microsoft and Apple as a Software Engineer and has extensive interviewing experience on both sides of the table.  At Google, she interviewed over 120 candidates at Google and served on its hiring committee.  Gayle received her bachelors and masters in  Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvalnia in 2005.
