Master’s Degree in Journalism & Computer Science at Columbia University

Columbia is taking applications now for their new Dual Master’s program.  From the brochure:

The program offers the highest caliber of computer science and
journalism training at Columbia University. Faculty members from
both schools advise students and work together, in close
collaboration to ensure that the courses are complementary. In
addition to taking classes offered at the Journalism and
Engineering schools, students attend a seminar and workshop
designed specifically for the dual-degree program. The seminar
teaches students about the impact of computing on journalism, the
emerging role of citizens in the news process, the influence of
social media, and the changing business models that will support
newsgathering.

Applying to Grad School? Meet Other Students Who Are Too!

Hi CSE Undergrads,

We have received several requests from students applying to graduate school asking if we could introduce them to other students who are also going through this process. We thought this was a great idea, and would like to open this up to everyone. We’re thinking of hosting an event where all prospective graduate students in the department can meet and share tips, proofread essays, network, etc. We’ll also invite current graduate students in our department, so they can share with you what they did to get into their programs.

Who: All CSE undergrads considering grad school, especially those of you planning on applying in the near future.
What: Informal meetup (with snacks!) to connect with other undergrads going through the same process and with graduate students who want to share their advice for success.
When/Where: TBD in early November. Please fill out the survey if you are interested so we can get an estimate of how many people would like to come and what days/times would be best.

Again, if this sounds like something you’d like to attend, PLEASE RESPOND to the catalyst survey below. Filling out this survey doesn’t mean you have to attend the event. We’re just trying to gauge who would like to participate and what days work best.

Upcoming NSF Fellowship Workshops – Dates and Times (CSE’s is this Thursday!)

From Todd Schiller, tws [@] cs.washington.edu:

We’ll be holding the NSF fellowship application workshop on Thursday (October 11th) at 2:30pm in CSE 303.

The workshop is a great opportunity to hear from past fellowship winners who applied during graduate school, meet with other students applying for the fellowship, and read essays from winning applications.
UW CSE has had a great track record of NSF winners. If you applied before while you were an undergrad, don’t be discouraged: you have a better chance of getting a fellowship as a graduate student.
Let me know if you have any questions. If you can’t make it, let me know and I’ll make sure you get copies of all the information.
