Health Informatics program at UT at Arlington

We would like to ask for your help in making students aware of an opportunity for a fully supported Ph.D. study in Health Informatics in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Arlington. For this opportunity we have Department of Education backed funding (through a Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need grant) to support U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident students for their Ph.D. studies. This opportunity is open to both M.S. and B.S. graduates, the latter through our expedited B.S. to Ph.D. program. The theme of our GAANN program is health informatics, an area in which our Department has many excellent researchers, focusing on such high tech research as bioinformatics, medical imaging, medical robotics, smart environments, smart health devices, etc.

We are lenient with our Ph.D. application deadlines and would love to talk to your qualifying students.

We appreciate your help. Please feel free to contact me with any question or any suggestions; I would love to hear from you or your academic advisors.

Best wishes,

Dr. Gergely Záruba

Biomedical Science Post-bac Research Program

Currently PREP is accepting applications for the 2013-2014 cohort. PREP stands for Post-baccalaureate Research and Education Program and is a National Institutes of Health (NIH) training program. PREP is designed to enhance the ability of under-represented individuals in the biomedical sciences to gain entry to, and succeed in, nationally recognized Ph.D. programs.
This program is for recent graduates who want to continue their education specifically in the biomedical sciences. PREP’s main benefit is to engage the scholar in cutting edge research for one full year with a faculty mentor of your choice. We also offer many other benefits, such as, annual salary, health/dental benefits, GRE preparation classes, tuition for academic courses, travel support to attend conferences and social and cultural activities.

The eligibility requirements for this program are as followed:  The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and be a member of a group that is found to be under-represented in the biomedical sciences. A person who feels they are from a challenging or disadvantage background must be a recipient of a Bachelor’s degree within the 36 months prior to the time of acceptance into the program. Also, the person must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (out of 4.0). Demonstrate commitment to pursuing a Ph.D. in a biomedical research field and have little or no research laboratory experience.

This is a very interdisciplinary program that recruits and accepts applications from participating departments such as Biochemistry/Molecular Biology, Biology, Biomedical Sciences(6 departments), Chemical & Nuclear Engineering, Chemistry/Biological Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics & Astronomy and Psychology but not limited to the previous mentioned departments.  Regardless of your undergraduate degree, if you have a sincere interest in pursuing a Ph.D. in a biomedical research field then this is definitely the program for you.

The application process involves many steps, but there is no hard deadline. The first step is to go to https://unmjobs.unm.edu, Search for a Posting number 0818051, then click View to access the application. Please submit a cover letter, resume/CV, personal statement, official transcripts, and three letters of reference. All these documents are required, and must be submitted before we can view your application.

For further questions or comments that you may have please contact the program coordinator, Antonio Bañuelos at PREP@unm.edu or jbanuelo@unm.edu or Tel: (505) 610- 1725.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Best,

Richard Cripps

5th year masters, BS/MS application update

Hey folks,

I know we had told a few of you that there might be a winter application for the BS/MS  (5th year masters) program.  Unfortunately, we will not be having an additional application cycle this winter. With only 20 new slots for the program every year, it was decided that we would keep a single application cycle.  We generally open the application in late May and make decisions by mid-June.  The possibility of a winter application was always tentative, but since the decision is now final, we wanted to alert you in case this alters any plans.

We do understand that a once a year application doesn’t work well for all students, and we are sympathetic to your various situations.  If you have questions about how this might effect you, please don’t hesitate to contact the CSE advising staff.  Elise and Crystal are the most familiar with the 5th year program, so try to see one of them.

We will have a BS/MS program information session this winter quarter.

PhD in Computational Neuroscience at Boston University

Interested in how brains work?

Get your PhD in Computational Neuroscience

at Boston University

You may be surprised to find out that a bachelor’s degree in computer science provides you with an excellent background for graduate studies in the exciting research field of computational neuroscience.

At Boston University, computational neuroscientists:

  • Build brain-computer interfaces that allow paralyzed people to control computers or robotic devices
  • Develop neuromorphic technologies that mimic how the brain solves complex problems such as vision, navigation, and movement control
  • Create neural network models of brain circuits underlying perception, action, and cognition
  • Use sophisticated mathematical analyses of brain rhythms to study human cognition and neurological disorders

These are just a few of the research opportunities available to Computational Neuroscience graduate students in the Boston University Graduate Program for Neuroscience. For more information, visit us at:

Invitation: Prospective Grad Student Meetup & Panel

Hi CSE Undergrads!

Are you planning on applying to grad school soon? Even if you’re just thinking about applying in the future, it can really help to know other people who are going through the same process.  Please join us for a panel and informal meetup on Thursday November 8th from 4-5pm in CSE 691 (Gates Commons).
We’ll provide a meeting space, snacks, and a panel of graduate students who have successfully navigated the application process and want to share their advice for success.  You’ll have time to hear their stories, ask them questions, and meet other students who can share tips, proofread essays, network, etc. Our graduate advisor, Lindsay Michimoto, will also be present to help answer your questions.
For those of you who already said you were interested and helped me choose a time, I really appreciate your feedback! However, please still officially RSVP so I can get a headcount. If you can only make it to half of the meeting because of class, that’s fine!  Come as long as you can. If you can’t make this event at all but are still interested in meeting people, please RSVP “no” at the link above and I’ll try to connect you with undergrad/grad students who were there.
Thanks! Please email me with any questions.
