NSF research fellowship information session Oct 31st 12-130pm, Gates Commons

If you are applying to graduate schools, you should definitely think about attending this NSF research fellowship information session.

What: NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Position Application
Information Session (a mouthful)
When: Oct 31st (Halloween!), 12p-1:30p
Where: Gates Commons (691)

Come attend a workshop giving tips and direction on how to prepare
your application for the NSF GRFP (deadline November 15th). Snacks and
printouts of application materials from past fellowship recipients
will be provided. A panel of past recipients (plus Ed!) will be there
to talk about their experiences and answer questions. No costumes
required.

Why you should apply for a GRFP:
* It’s more money than the normal stipend
* It looks good on your CV
* You are supported independent of a particular faculty member (shop
around!) OR you’ll save your advisor money OR you can take a break
from TAing
* Practice your skills describing yourself and your research
* It’s a public service: NSF GRFP money is awarded to disciplines
proportionate to the size of their applicant pools

The ATLAS Institute at the University of Colorado at Boulder is
actively seeking students who wish to combine technology and
international development for its Masters of Science in Information
and Communication Technology for Development (MS-ICTD). The MS-ICTD
program is the first stand-alone ICTD master’s degree in the US, and
is welcoming applicants for the 3rd cohort. The first two cohorts are
currently spending practicum semesters with ICTD organizations,
development agencies and high tech companies, including work in
Africa, South Asia, Latin America, and depressed communities in the
US. The program aims to attract students from a variety of backgrounds
for a three-semester residency program and a semester-long fieldwork
practicum. If this sounds intriguing, please come to  room 258 in Mary
Gates Hall at 3:30 on Monday, Oct 31st, where program director Revi
Sterling will discuss the program and answer questions about courses
and opportunities.

For more information, please visit
http://www.colorado.edu/atlas/newatlas/masters/ for a detailed program
description or email Dr. Sterling at revi.sterling@colorado.edu.

Picard: a totally awesome facebook game for studying GRE flashcards

Subject: [cs-ugrads] Picard: a totally awesome facebook game for studying GRE flashcards
To: cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu

Hi Undergrads!

Some of you are presumably applying to grad school this fall and need
to take the GRE in the future or near past. I assume your math skills
are probably pretty stellar, but maybe your vocab skills are a little
weak? If so, maybe WE can help YOU by having you help US by playing an
awesome flashcard-quizzing-and-drawing game called Picard!

You can find it here: https://www.centerforgamescience.com/picard/gre.php
and here: https://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=155922757790872

Who we are: Some grad students in CSE all mostly associated with the
Center for Game Science who’ve been working on this game for a while.

What this is: We just want people to play! We *need* people to play,
as this is part of our grad student research. Playing consists of
quizzing (good for basic review) AND ALSO DRAWING (optional!!) which
is fun and actually awesome for helping you learn and remember things.
The drawings are called Picards (pic-card). This game is one of the
few IN EXISTENCE where players draw the content themselves AND where
the user-created content actually serves a purpose within and outside
of the game. Pretty neat, if you ask me!

Where’s the Star Trek? In addition to vocab words, we have some other
topics like Star Trek episodes, World Capitals, and Software Design
Patterns, which you’re welcome to try. You’re also more than welcome
to draw star trek themed Picards for any topic.

Thanks for taking a look!! If you have younger siblings prepping for
the SAT, we’ve also got SAT words (although I just pulled the lists
off the internet and they seem kind of similar…) Here’s the link a
couple more times:

https://www.centerforgamescience.com/picard/gre.php
https://www.centerforgamescience.com/picard/gre.php
https://www.centerforgamescience.com/picard/gre.php

Thanks again!
– Kathleen

P.S. If you’re concerned about the hefty FB permissions and the TOS,
here’s the deal: Picard WILL email you sometimes (because facebook
basically did away with notifications and changed them into “requests”
which make sense for farmville but not us) and Picard will only post
on your wall With Your Permission when you draw a Picard. The TOS just
has to do with getting human subject approval from IRB so we can write
a paper about this some day. If you make it past these and actually
play, you are awesome!

Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program competition, with a January 23, 2012 deadline.

Seniors interested in biomedical engineering and graduate school should take a look at this opportunity.

Dear Colleagues,

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to announce the opening of the2012-2013 Whitaker International Fellows and Scholars Program competition, with a January 23, 2012 deadline.

Program Overview

The Whitaker International Program provides funding to emerging U.S.-based leaders in biomedical engineering/bioengineering to conduct a study and/or research project abroad, with the underlying objective of increasing international collaboration in the field of Biomedical Engineering (BME). Grant projects – including lab research, coursework, public policy work – are intended to enhance both the recipient’s career and the field. Founded in 2005 by the Whitaker Foundation (now closed), the program is administered by the Institute of International Education.

Whitaker International Program grants are awarded based on an activity/project proposal that is relevant to biomedical engineering.  Note that not all aspects of the project have to be strictly BME related, but the applicant should showcase how the award will enhance his/her future goals in the bioengineering field.  The program also allows for non-BME majors to apply as long as the candidate has relevant experience and interest in BME.

We anticipate offering about 50 grants, but only the highest-quality applicants are offered awards. In the last three competitions, 20, 35 and 40 grants were awarded.

We are seeking to increase our pool of qualified applicants, so all eligible students who are exploring the idea of going abroad for a post-graduate/post-doctoral project are encouraged to apply.  Aside from the personal and professional benefits to the individual grantee, benefits to the home institution also accrue, as new university partnerships have developed with hosting institutions overseas; collaborations have developed between U.S. bioengineers and their academic counterparts worldwide; and U.S. labs have benefited from having their students learn and bring back new and, sometimes, cutting-edge technologies and procedures.

Awards have included research in heart blood flow, improved prosthetic leg design, development of affordable oral cancer screening tools, and investment in BME research. Projects occur worldwide, and have taken place in many European countries, as well as in such places as China,  South Africa, Vietnam, Australia, Singapore and many more.

Types of Grants

The Whitaker International Program has two categories
·         Fellows –   Graduate-level applicants, from graduating seniors through current PhD students. Fellows receive a stipend for one year, and are eligible for tuition reimbursement.
·         Scholars – Post-doctoral applicants, who recently received their PhD.  Scholar awards can be for as little as one academic semester or as long as two years of funding, depending on their needs. Second year funding is contingent upon demonstration of progress made during the first year.

Website & Online Application
http://www.whitaker.org/
http://whitaker.usapplications.org/

The online application is now open with a January 23, 2012 deadline. The website listed above has all the information pertaining to the program, including eligibility requirements, examples of potential host institutions, and former grantee profiles.

Whitaker Program On-line Forum
http://www.whitaker.org/forum/

A new Whitaker on-line forum has been created for applicants to interact with former grantees and ask them questions about grant projects, tips on the application, securing host affiliations, and the general grant experience. Additionally, the forum has answers to many Frequently Asked Questions on the Whitaker Program.

Publicity Materials
Please feel free to circulate this email to your colleagues or to students who you think would be eligible for the program.  Program brochures are available upon request.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions about the Whitaker International Program.

Thanks & Best Regards,

Week of CSE: Research Night, BBQ, Canoeing

Hey all,

No more tech talks!  But this is probably the best week ever to be a CSE major! Here are the lowdown of events this week.

1.) Ugrad Research Night — Thursday May 19th — 430-730pm — EEB037/Atrium

This quarterly event is a great time to pick up a research position for the summer if you are still looking for something to do, pick up a project to work on next year, or start preparing for graduate school. 430-530pm will be a graduate school and research panel in EEB 037, while 530-730 will be a research poster session in the Atrium.  Light refreshments will be provided.

2.) CSE Spring BBQ — Friday May 20th — 400-730pm — Sylvan Grove

It’s the Department-Wide BBQ! It should be an awesome time with Music, Food, Drinks, Inflatables, Frisbee, Prof Pieing, and tons of Socializing.  Come celebrate the end of the year!  The alternate location will be the CSE Atrium and surrounding area if the torrential monsoons return (let’s hope not).

3.) ACMW Canoe Day — Saturday May 21st — 10:30am — Atrium —> Lake Washington!

If that wasn’t enough, then there is canoeing.  Possibly the funnest event of the year.  Meet at 1030am to walk over to the WAC, or meet us at the WAC at 1045am.  Bring a lunch, Frisbee, waterproof camera, and cash for the canoe rental! (~5-10$)  This should be a really great event to hang out with CSE people before we all head off for the summer.

Enjoy the sunshine!  =D
