UW Information Sessions, NAE Seattle Summit and Poster Competition

Dear engineering students and faculty,

Please stop by any time during one of the information sessions listed below to learn about the National Academy of Engineers Grand Challenges Summit Series and student poster competition to be held in Seattle May 2nd and 3rd hosted by the University of Washington. Hundreds of engineers, scientists, innovators, and students from nine U.S. states and British Columbia will be attending this regional conference. Please stop by and learn more. http://www.engr.washington.edu/news/nae10/index.html

The purpose in holding these information sessions is to help engineering students learn about how to participate in the conference and how to register for the poster competition held on May 2nd. The competition would be an opportunity for students to gain national exposure for engineering research and/or designs.

The Seattle Summit is focused on two of the fourteen Grand Challenges identified by the National Academy of Engineering: “Engineer better medicines” and “Engineer the tools of scientific discovery”. As an engineering student, my goal is to increase student participation in a conference that brings engineers together – across all disciplines and universities to address the engineering challenges of our time.

Information Sessions:

Thursday, April 8th, 4:00pm to 5:00pm in the Electrical Engineering Building (EEB) 403
Monday, April 12th, 11:30am to 12:30pm, in the Deans Conference Room, Loew 355
Tuesday, April 13th, 5:30pm to 6:30pm in ABC McCarty Hall

Demos for Direct Admission Visit Day – April 16th

Hi all,
Each year we admit a small number of incoming freshmen directly into the CSE undergraduate program through our DA program. On Friday, April 16th, we will host an afternoon “visit day” for these students and their parents. A significant piece of the visit is breaking the visitors into small groups and having them rotate through two demos and building tours from 4-5:30pm. Each year we’ve had really interesting, hands-on/interactive demos (recents include RFID, HCI lab, Photo Tourism, FoldIt, WebAnywhere, etc.), and it’d be great to have another fantastic line-up for them again this year.

This means I’m putting out the call for volunteers! If you are interested in participating in this event with a research or class project demo, please let me know. We’d love to have your help in impressing the prospective students and their parents.
Thanks!
Megan

Subject: [cs-ugrads] 2010 Engineering Open House (Discovery Days)

CSE Faculty, Staff and Students,

After a one-year hiatus, the Engineering Open House will make its 2010 return on Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24.  The official title for this year’s event is Engineering Discovery Days 2010.

CSE faculty and student participation is a vital element to the success of this event.  Specifically we are in need of faculty and graduate student volunteers for research demonstrations, and undergraduates for tours and presentations.  If you can help out in any way please reply to this email as soon as possible.

This year’s events are limited to approximately 5000 attendees over both days.  As in the past, there will be campus-wide exhibits and activities over the course of the two days.  We plan to confine our CSE activities to the atrium.

We are in need of volunteers for the following Engineering Discovery Days events within the CSE building:

Friday, April 23: 10:00 am to 1:00 pm (for grades 4-8).  Friday’s greatest need is research demos that can be repeated over the course of the three hours.

Saturday, April 24: 10 am to 2 pm (for high school and older, potential CSE recruits).  Saturday’s greatest need is undergraduate tour leaders and volunteers for a student panel.

Additional details will be forthcoming as we get closer to the event.  We will look forward to your input and participation.
