EE 476 available to CSE students

Recent update, EE 476 will be open to CSE majors this fall if there is room. You likely won’t have the prerequisites, so you can contact the EE advisors with your full name and student number and sln’s of the lecture and section you want that are open and they will add you if there is room.

This will count as a CSE senior elective.

Prereqs for CSE will be:

EE215 or EE205
EE271 or CSE 352

Poster session Monday 12-130 in CSE atrium for CSE481K Designing Technology for Low-Resource Settings (the ICTD Capstone)

You are invited to the:

CSE481K Designing Technology for Low-Resource Settings (the ICTD Capstone)
POSTER AND DEMO SESSION
Monday, June 9, noon-1:30 in the CSE Atrium

Each winter and spring, students design and prototype technology solutions to problems motivated by issues encountered in low-resource settings. This year four groups worked on projects related to vaccine cold chain management:

*DashTricks: Tablet for District Manager – Tanzania

DashTricks is an Android tablet application that provides district immunization managers in Tanzania with a dashboard for monitoring the performance of key immunization indicators in health facilities in their districts. Our project aims to give district managers a sense of ownership over their data to help them realize problems and make better vaccine management decisions intuitively and correctly.

*IcePAK: Tablet for National Manager – Pakistan

IcePAK is a mobile application focused on vaccine cold chain management in Pakistan. It’s goal is to integrate large amounts of data into easily consumable forms, enabling decision makers and managers to allocate resources effectively. High visibility of problem areas, and automated allocation recommendations, allows these at risk locations to recognized early and dealt with efficiently.

*Training App for Laos

We are developing a tablet-based training application that will be used to train health workers in Laos.  The initial purpose of the application is to train workers on how to use an SMS-based vaccine stock reporting system, but it will be used for other training in the future. Some of the challenges this group has faced: designing for potentially non-technical users, creating an extensible application for future training needs, and simplifying the application update and synchronization process.

*SMS Immunization Manager

The SMS Immunization Manager (SIM) is an easy-to-install and easy-to-customize system that allows community health workers to report information about the vaccine cold chain (such as fridge temperature and condition) by SMS rather than paper forms. SIM’s main features include robust SMS-based operations that correctly handle even poorly-formatted messages and a moderation web application for administrators to review the system’s operation. The system will be deployed in Laos in the coming months and possibly to other countries after.

Join us on Monday, June 9th, from noon – 1:30 in the CSE Atrium to get a hands-on demo and discuss the projects with the students around their posters.

Hope to see you all there on Monday.

New section of 344

We added a new section for 344 today, meeting at 1130. It would be great if some of you from the AA and AB sections could move to the later section. sln 22771 meeting at 1130.

Just want you folks to all know that we are doing the best we can to add space.  This is one example, and as we obtain access to larger rooms and finalized teaching schedules, we’ll continue to add space when we can.

And if you’re one of those registered for courses you don’t plan to take, now is a great time to drop them so your comrades can add them.

Thanks everyone!

Capstones and overloading

We’re getting a LOT of questions about both capstones and overloading courses. As a reminder, here is the status:

1. Capstones are going to be late this year, we’re still waiting on the distribution for next year. There will be at least one in the fall, and at least one in winter and probably several in spring. Once we know what they are going to be, we’ll open a catalyst for Computer Engineering majors, they will get preference for a capstone. After the CE Students will the space, any remaining room will be opened during regular registration every quarter.  For fall, we’ll open the capstone for registration after the CE’s have registered.

2. Overloading. Yes, some courses are starting to fill. As usual, you need to TRY to register for the course so it puts a mark in the registration tool that allows us to see how many students are trying to add the course.   See the policies on overloading for further information.

We’ll certainly update you as we learn more.

Registration Notes for Fall 2014

A few notes and updates about fall 2014 registration:

1. Security will be offered, taught by a guest lecturer, it will most likely be offered T and Th from 11am to 1220pm with sections on Thursdays at 130 or 230.  We are hoping this will be ready for registration tomorrow.

2. 403 is still pending but it isn’t looking good. At this point registration in 403 is going to be held until we know if we’ll find an instructor or not. If it DOES open, we’ll probably have a catalyst survey to sign up and give priority to graduating students. If you needed 403 to graduate fall quarter, you should register for an alternate course.

3. We will be having two lectures of CSE 351 this fall, we’re still working on getting a room for the 2nd lecture, more details to follow.

4. Capstone will be announced in late summer this year instead of early June.  There will be at least one capstone in fall quarter. CE graduating students and 5th year masters students will have priority for capstones.

That’s all we know at this point, stay tuned to your email for updates as they come in.

Summer courses update – no offering of CSE 351

In late breaking news today, sadly, CSE 351 will no longer be offered this summer.

CSE 333 and 421 are still on the schedule, and that shouldn’t change.  CSE 456 should also be offered, likely on Saturdays, but that is still pending.

We apologize for the inconvenience, let the ugrad-advisors know if this causes issues for you and we’ll work on finding a solution.
