We are Batman’s Kitchen, the UW competition team, and we are looking for new members.
Interested in learning about computer security issues and/or being part of a competition team? We hold regular meetings, practice breaking/hacking stuff, learn about the latest security topics, and compete in CTF/hacker jeopardy competitions throughout the year. You don’t need any prior experience in security to join the team — all you need an interest in CTFs and/or security plus a willingness to learn. Our group is an interdisciplinary group of students from CSE, EE, iSchool, pre-engineering, and other UW departments. We also collaborate with the other two UW branches (Tacoma and Bothell).
Our Info Meeting is next Wednesday, October 1st, CSE room 691, at 6:00pm. We welcome everyone. At the Info Meeting we’ll talk about the type of competitions we do, topics we‘ll cover in the coming year (e.g., lockpicking, bitcoin, etc.), and about local hacker groups and hands-on labs.
Even if you can’t make it to the meeting, sign up for our mailing list at https://mailman.cs.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/uwctf and check out our website at http://uwctf.cs.washington.edu. If you have any questions, email me and I can tell you more.
See you Wednesday!

Dear CS majors,
With just one week left until the beginning of a new academic year, we
would like to send you a quick reminder (or announcement) for the Putnam
Mathematical Contest preparations sessions and the Math 380A class (“The
Art of Problem Solving”) connected to it.
Math 380A can be used as good preparation for anyone interested in
mathematical contest-taking (and as a stand-alone, it would make for a
very interesting, fun, and challenging class).
Are you a person who is intrigued by mathematical puzzles and beautiful
problems? Would you considering taking the Putnam exam? If so, we urge you
to think about registering for Math 380A. Let me emphasize registering,
not just auditing. It is important that you do the homework, in order to
learn, and there is more incentive for doing homework if you’re
registered.
Please check out
www.math.washington.edu/~putnam/putpage.html
for the Putnam exam, and

for Math 380A, The Art of Problem Solving.
Wishing you all a great Autumn ’14 quarter,
Ioana Dumitriu and Julia Pevtsova

Daniel Epstein (UW CSE, PhD Student) will cover why programming competitions will make you a better software developer and programmer, help you find a job, and most importantly, why they’re tons of fun! He’ll offer some tips for clever problem solving, go through problems from previous contests and their solutions, and demonstrate some common pitfalls.

Subject: Last-minute advice for Y Combinator applicants
Garry Tan just posted last-minute advice for YC applicants:
The deadline is March 28.
If any UW CSE students are thinking about applying, I’d be happy to take a look at their app and give feedback! I’d love to see more Huskies get in. (contact CSE advising staff for Brandon’s email)

I wanted to loop UW students in on something called the AdMob Challenge. There was a recent announcement made via a Google Students post about this which you can read about in more detail via the link, but basically AdMob is the name of a Google platform that helps app developers monetize their apps. The AdMob team is trying to build tech student awareness (especially to those who are already creating their own apps) by creating this challenge.
Students form teams of 1-5 and create an App. They have until March 31st to submit their apps. Winning teams get prizes, and the grand prize is a trip to Mountain View, CA.
This challenge could be particularly good for students who already have an internship with another company this summer but are still interested in Google. I’ve attached a one-sheeter about the challenge and you can feel free to copy and share the G+ post as you wish.
It would be great if you could let your students know about this challenge. You can direct students to the official site, where they can register and get all the info.
Let me know if you have any questions!
