10 weeks, 6 production level games

In this quarter’s Games Capstone class teams were presented with a challenge to produce a full featured video game released in the wild, on major game distribution sites such as Kongregate and newgrounds so that their creations can be evaluated in the real world.

I am happy to report that the games are now out, you can see all of them here.  Give them a try, they cover a variety of genres.

More interestingly the games gathered significant praise from the players around the world.  Here I list some of the outcomes (new ones arriving hourly):

–    Around a million players played all games in total in last 3 weeks

–    Two games had full featured reviews by a site that reviews a few noteworthy games each week. You can read the two reviews here: http://jayisgames.com/archives/2010/05/chromatic.php and http://jayisgames.com/archives/2010/06/hello_worlds.php

–    The publicized games have now over 10 contract offers for distribution at different game sites, as well as offers for additional funding to develop the game for other platforms.

–    Hello Worlds! Game has won two monetary prizes: a second place, in the best game of the week, and the second/third best game of the month (even though it has been out only for the last week of May) on Kongregate.com.  This is particularly impressive given, that the competition is games with real budgets, and high quality production including the licensing rights for Wallace & Gromit branding.

–    as of last Sat, hello worlds is now a #1 featured game on Kongregate!

–    This week, Defenders of the Light and Time Decay are competing for the best game of the week honor at Kongregate.com

–    The teams collectively earned a significant amount of revenue through awards, commissions, and distribution contracts, which will likely continue beyond the class.

As some of you know a heated competition between UW and Cornell has started: who will build a full 3D replica of the campus first.  So far Cornell is trampling all over us, and there are only 13 days left.  I’m hoping you can help us with the comeback by playing at

http://photocitygame.com/competition.php

or with the iPhone app http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photocity/id341994556

There are trophy replicas of the buildings, T-shirts and general bragging rights at stake.

Student Paper Contest Announcement from IEEE

Want a chance to win up to $800? Do you have papers cluttering your hard-drive from final projects, research projects or internships? Then submit an abstract to the IEEE Seattle Section Student Paper Contest by this weekend! The important thing to note is that the paper can be any technically related paper — it doesn’t need to be a new work!

The IEEE Regions have annual contests for students to demonstrate their writing and presentation skills. This year, we will have our third consecutive contests for students here in the Seattle Section, hosted at the UW.

To submit an abstract, or the full paper, send an email to Joe Decuir at jdecuir@ieee.org.

Full rules for the contest can be found at: http://ieee-seattle.org/details/2010-04-10_students.html

Yahoo! Announces: YUI 3 Gallery Contest

* Submit a YUI BSD-licensed gallery module by March 22, 2010
* Entries will be judged on usefulness, uniqueness, code quality and documentation
* Prize: JSConf 2010 conference pass + $500 gift certificate to Expedia.com for travel
* Full contest details: http://yuiblog.com/yui3gallerycontest2010/
* Some community-generated module ideas: http://yuilibrary.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=115&t=2915

YUI 3 is an JavaScript and CSS library originally developed (and still supported) by Yahoo!  It powers Yahoo.com, Yahoo Search, and future versions of Yahoo Mail and other key sites.  YUI addresses many of the same challenges as jQuery, but it takes a different approach — lazy-loading and sandboxing are built in to everything you do in YUI 3, making it a good choice for scalable frontend development.

The YUI 3 Gallery (http://yuilibrary.com/gallery/ ) provides a straightforward mechanism for you to contribute to this prominent open-source project, and now is a great time to make a contribution.  If you submit a new module to the Gallery by March 22, 2010, under YUI’s BSD license, you may be eligible to win a ticket to one of the premier web engineering conferences, JSConf, along with $500 from Expedia to help you get there.

Contributing to the YUI 3 Gallery is easy if you know some JS and CSS.  Several dozen modules already to serve as code-structure models, and there are many reasonably-scoped ideas for new modules that could be completed within a couple of weeks.  The prize is fantastic — JSConf has some of the best speakers in the industry, and this year’s lineup is filled with compelling speakers.  Win or lose, contributing a visible, enduring piece of code to a well-known OSS project is a fantastic learning experience and an activity that looks great on your resume going forward.
