Limited CSE tutoring available!

Hello, CSE undergrads! I hope your first days of Spring quarter have gone well. If you do sense trouble, remember that it’s easiest to resolve issues when we can address them early — don’t wait until the end of the quarter. We also have some tutoring available for CSE courses. Tutoring happens in groups of 1-3 undergrads, led by a CSE grad student tutor. It’s free. 🙂  To request a study group, please email me asap.

Reminder: Lab Forum, April 6th (Wed) 1-2pm room 691

Just a brief reminder that there will be a forum tomorrow hosted by our Department Chair, Professor Hank Levy on the condition of the undergraduate labs.  Our hope is that you will all bring thoughts/suggestions on how to improve the lab environment.

You will certainly have an opportunity to express concerns and ask questions, but we also hope you will be bringing ideas on how to improve things as well.

Tentative!!! Course Schedule for 2011-2012 posted

Please note that the 2011-2012 course schedule is still tentative, but here is our best guestimate of what will be offered next year and when.   Things can always change, but hopefully this will help some of you with planning your future schedules.  There have been some changes from previous years, so please take a careful look at the web page below.

http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/time-sched/

Also note that CSE 344 is a new prerequisite for next spring’s offering of CSE 444.  So if you want to take 444 next spring, you need 344 this spring, fall, or winter.

This summer, CSE 421 will be the 400 level course that will be offered, and it will only be offered once during the regular academic year.

Stressed? Please use UW counseling resources!

Hello, CSE Majors.

As we hear more news about the devastation in Japan, and enter the general stress of finals week, we want to remind you about UW counseling resources available to students.

For general well-being:
Hall Health and the Counseling Center in Schmitz Hall both provide mental health counseling, plus a variety of resources from general stress management to urgent care. Counseling through the Counseling Center in Schmitz is free for students! This page has links to both offices, along with a couple other resources:
http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/ugrad/advising/counseling_resources.html

If you find yourself in a state of crisis, you have lots of options!

  • Hall Health offers Urgent Care: students are eligible for one “crisis intervention” per quarter at no charge.
  • The Counseling Center in Schmitz typically has someone on-call for urgent walk-in appointments, during normal office hours.
  • If you need to speak with someone urgently, outside of normal office hours, call the non-profit Crisis Clinic at (206) 461-3222 or (866) 427-4747. (If a situation is life-threatening, use 911.)
  • You can also call the Safe Campus hotline: (206) 685-SAFE.

If you notice a friend needs help, please share these resources with him or her. You can also report your concerns anonymously (or openly) to the Office of Student life: livewell@uw.edu, or call (206) 543-6085.

And remember that while CSE advisers are not mental health counselors, we are available to talk with you. If you have an issue and are not sure where to start, feel free to contact one of us.  🙂

New ugrad/bsms webpages are live

Hey everyone,

Just a heads up that we launched the re-organized Ugrad and BS/MS webpages today.

Ugrad: http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/ugrad/

BS/MS: http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/bsms/

We *hope* the new site will be easier to navigate, but if there is something you can’t find that was on the old site, or you find a page redirecting to the old pages, please let us know ASAP so we can help.  We’d also love your feedback, positive or critical, so we can continue to improve things overall.

A big thank you to our newest advisor, Elise, who helped make this happen, we couldn’t have done it without her.

Sincerely,

CSE Advising: Crystal, Megan, Raven and Elise

Overloading CSE major’s courses

Just a reminder that we will be handling overloads the same way we did in Autumn, so attend the CSE classes you want to get into and place your name on the overload request form. We’ll also have an online form you’ll need to fill out later this week.

We will have a few spaces in 332 mostly for students who also want CSE 312, so please put the number “312” next to your name on the overload form when you fill it out for 332 if you want both courses.

We’ll make decisions by Monday of next week at the latest.
