Teaching Schedule 2012-2013 posted and advising note

Hey folks,

Just a reminder that you can login to the ugradnews site and set your preferences.  We try to use the categories when we’re posting messages. So if you just want information on Advising Reminders, courses and research for example, you can set that preference.

You’ve been asking for next year’s teaching schedule, we now have it up, but we don’t have instructors listed. We’ll hope to add names by sometime this summer, but for now, at least you should have a general idea of what will be offered and when it will be offered. Please note this is of course tentative, so things might still change.

5TH Year Masters (BS/MS program in CSE)

Hey folks,

Just a reminder that if you are a junior and plan to apply to the BS/MS 5th year master’s program, you need to finish all required 300 level courses by the end of spring quarter, and ideally be through one 400, or an additional 300 level CSE course.

We’ll have an information session early in spring quarter to help you plan. The application will open towards the end of spring and close right at the end of the quarter, so spring grades will be considered during the admission meeting.

Registration information updates, including 333 info and other space added

Hey everyone,

A few reminders/updates from advising.

1. Even if a class is full and you see that there are no more spaces, please still try to add the course as it allows us to see unmet demand for courses. It won’t put you on a waiting list, but it will help us see where we may need to expand courses.

2. If you are not graduating this spring/summer and plan to take a 400 level course that requires 333 this fall, please fill out the catalyst survey.

3. We should be opening a few more spaces in CSE 352, 403 and  431 in the next week or so.   Those spaces will be filled by whoever gets there first.

4. For students who have finished most of their 300’s there are also a few capstones this spring that still have space.

Thank you,

333 – add code removed

The add code for 333 has been removed. Seniors who are going to graduate in spring or summer are still not allowed to register for the course.

No waiting lists and capstone information

Okay, one more email, then the 3 day weekend.

1. Once again there are NO waiting lists for CSE courses that fill (i.e. security, etc.)  Here is a link to how we’ll handle overloads. http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/ugrad/advising/regadvice_majors.html

2. Capstone space has opened for everything except games.  The games capstone may have 1-2 spaces but those will be released (if at all) late next week. Everything else is open.  Developing world, hardware, and comp bio.

3. Capstone surveys for 2012-2013 courses will be sent out in late May. Pre-assignment for those capstones will take place in June.

Advising – dropins live and online

We’ll have dropins as we usually do today at 2 in the Allen Center and also online via our ugrad-advisor@cs gmail account and also with ugrad-advisor as a Skype name.   I’m not sure how the queue will work exactly, but we’ll give it a go and see how well it works.

Welcome back! Important notes!

Hey everyone,

Welcome back to the UW. We hope you all had a restful, fun summer.   We have a few notes for you.

1. Prerequisites, some 400 level prerequisites will be changing over the next year. We’ll update you as we learn more, but we’ll also keep it online linked from this page: http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/ugrad/academics/degree_requirements.html     It’s the 5th bullet under Curriculum.  451 will have 333 added as a prereq starting in fall 2012 so that’s one to plan ahead for next year.  333 is also highly recommended before 451 this year.

2.  Check out my previous post for our plea for mentors, we still need a few more.

3. Although we’re happy to see you all again, we’d rather not see you all at once…. therefore if you don’t have something urgent that has to do with fall registration, please try to wait until the 2nd week or so to come see us. Dropins are listed on the calendar and we’ll try to keep those fairly consistent.

4. If you’re graduating this fall quarter, check your MyCSE page to see if there is a ‘projected graduation’ date. If it says fall, great. If not, then you need to see us by Oct 14th.  Winter and spring graduates should come in for graduation appointments Oct 17 – 31st.

That should be all for now, have a great first day back!

Important course information: updated teaching schedule and 444 and 451 prereqs

http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/time-sched/teaching2011-2012.html

It is still tentative of course until the quarter starts, but this should be fairly close to the final schedule.

Change prereqs:

1. CSE 444 will require 344 as a prerequisite starting this up coming academic year. So if you plan to take 444 this spring, you need to take 344 first.

2. By fall 2012, CSE 333 will be a prerequisite to CSE 451.  For the 2011-2012 academic year it’s highly recommended, but not yet required.

Let the advising staff know if you have questions.

Graduating seniors, register for UW commencement now!

Today starts the registration period (May 2 – 22, 2011) for UW Commencement.  CSE students may attend both the UW Commencement ceremony and the CSE Graduation Celebration (or just one, whatever you prefer).

Registration is now open for ordering graduation regalia, parking, tickets for the UW Graduation Ceremony in Husky Stadium. You can also register for the CSE Graduation Celebration on the same form.

Go here to register:  http://www.washington.edu/graduation/

If you do not wish to order regalia, you can still participate in the CSE Graduation Celebration, but not the UW one.
Dress code for the CSE Graduation Celebration is business casual.

Meany Hall now requires that we distribute tickets for admission to the CSE event.  You can order them here:
https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/pim/132351

We will distribute tickets during finals week at the front office desk between 1:00-3:30pm. Shortly before Graduation on June 11, we will send you instructions about where to sit in Meany Hall and what to do.  🙂

Please let us know if you have any questions!
