We need mentors for spring!

Hey folks, welcome back for the last push before summer!

We need mentors! If you have been in the department for at least one quarter, please sign up to be a mentor.  The welcome night is THIS THURSDAY 4-530pm (yes, food included).  I know this conflicts with some courses and TA’ing, sorry about that, we didn’t have a lot of options. Please sign up via the catalyst survey by 10am on Thurs.  Mentors will meet in room 691 of the Allen center around 4.

Overloading: If you are still trying to get into a CSE course, plan to attend the first day and put your name on the overload list. We’ll try to make decisions by Friday.

Dropin advising: It’s going to be very busy this week.  If you have immediate registration issues, feel free to come to dropins this week, if you want to look at your four year plan… let’s wait until you fill out a MyPlan and then come see us after a couple of weeks have passed…

Email:  We get a lot of email, but here is a tip, if you need a section change or something registration related and you give us ALL the info you think we might need (student number, sln’s etc) so we don’t have to look things up, there is a higher chance we’ll answer your email sooner rather than later.  Please try to give us at least 48 hours to return your email before pinging us again. Sending an email every hour or two doesn’t increase your chances of getting spot in the coveted class…

Hope you all had a relaxing spring break and are ready to dive into a fun quarter. We look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

CSE Advising: Crystal, Raven, Jen, and Tina

Moving CS-Ugrad blog to protected page

Hey folks,

It looks like most of you access this blog via direct mail to your email (which is how we generally set it up).  The blog is nice as it’s easier to search than email we find, but we’ve decided that we want to move it to a password protected page.  This will allow us a bit more freedom with our posting as right now it is open to the public.

The only folks this will likely effect are those of you using an RSS feed with the blog. It doesn’t appear that there are very many of you doing that, but if a lot of you feel this is the wrong move, by all means, speak up by sending me individual mail.

Otherwise, note that starting spring quarter, if you want to access the blog online, you’ll need to login with your CSE net ID credentials. The messages will still be sent to your inbox, nothing will change with that method of delivery.  And, as always, we’ll try to add the filters (categories) on messages to help you stay organized.

Reminder to please add internships for summer and spring quarter paid research to MyCSE

A new note for those participating in paid research. We need all students pursuing research for pay to fill out their information on the research tab in MyCSE: https://norfolk.cs.washington.edu/mycse

at the start of spring quarter.  If you are doing paid research this quarter, please email me your name, project title, hours/week you’re working for winter so I can add it to our statistics.

We are required to report on stats that include students pursuing paid research in addition to students receiving credit.

Additionally, if you know where you will be working this summer, it’s crucial for us to have accurate statistics on where our students are getting internships and how many of you are getting internships. Please fill out the co-ops, internships tab in MyCSE: https://norfolk.cs.washington.edu/mycse with your information. If there are jobs on there from your original CSE application that are not CSE related, please remove those or contact me with questions.

Registration notes for Spring 2014

Just a few notes about spring registration.

1. We just mailed out the add codes for CSE 481D the Games Capstone for the CE students who were on the original list. If you are a CE major graduating this spring and need a capstone to graduate, you should email us ASAP. All others, (CS majors and non-graduating CE’s) same story as usual, go the first week and add your name to the overload list.  Please note that CSE 477 and 481K (Developing World) are open right now with lots of room and they are both great capstones.

2. We know there are a lot of full courses. Remember the process, TRY to add it even if it’s full since that will trigger the ‘unmet need’ totals for us so we can see where current demand. We can then try to adjust course limits over the next few weeks. We do plan to add more space, so use the UW tools available to notify you when space opens.

3. Keep in mind that generally we get everyone into what they need. The less you “hoard” courses the better.  We get really cranky when we hear about you ‘bartering’ for courses and registering for 5 when you know you will take 2. Please be considerate with your choices.

As usual, let us know if you have questions, but most of all, try not to panic. Hopefully by now you know your trusty advising team is here to help and we’ll get things worked out by the first week.

Sincerely,

Crystal, Raven, Jen and Tina

Curriculum Changes – please read through this

We have a few changes that have gone into effect recently that we wanted to alert you to.

1. CSE 458 Computer Animation, is now a Core Course

2. Biol 162 (Second Biology course awarded for AP credit) will count as 5 credits of approved natural science

3. We’ve updated our online degree requirement pages, hopefully making them a little easier to follow.

4. We’ve updated the Computer Engineering writing course by removing the ‘no longer offered’ HCDE 333 and replacing it with a 4 credit UW Approved Writing or Composition course.
http://www.cs.washington.edu/students/ugrad/degree_requirements/

5. Starting in spring, there are some official changes to the capstone prerequisites. Please keep in mind that we are making these changes to ensure that capstones come later in a student’s academic timeline.

Change the official prerequisite for CSE481 and 454 to:

Instructor permission or all of CSE 332; CSE351; and CSE 331 or CSE 352; recommended that students have completed 300-level courses, and several 400-level CSE courses.

Graduation Appointments Released

We have opened graduation appointment slots for students wishing to graduate this winter or spring.

You will receive graduating senior priority registration (you get to register first) for your last two quarters, but once you’ve used it, you’re done, even if you extend graduation.
You should check your MyCSE page first to see if you have filed or not, there should be a “graduation status’ date in the upper right hand corner when you first log in.
If you haven’t filed yet, please follow the steps online and then set up an appointment, or dropins are an option.
Scheduled appointments are generally better since they are less rushed.

We need mentors, and lots of patience this week

Hey folks,

First, a big welcome back to our current students and a congratulations to all our newly admitted students.  We look forward to working with all of you this year (but ideally not all at the same time).  So here are a few notes to remember this fall:

We need mentors! If you have been in the department for at least one quarter, please sign up to be a mentor.  The welcome night is THIS THURSDAY 4-530pm (yes, food included).  I know this conflicts with some courses and TA’ing, sorry about that, we didn’t have a lot of options. Please sign up via the catalyst survey by 10am on Thurs.  Mentors will meet in room 305 of the Allen center around 4.

Overloading: If you are still trying to get into a CSE course, plan to attend the first day and put your name on the overload list. We’ll try to make decisions by Monday.

Dropin advising: We have four advisors, plus a new half time advisor this year (Tina Donahue) who will be helping you folks out, but we also have over 650 current students and hundreds of prospective students, so we’ll need your patience.

Hope you all had a relaxing summer and are ready to dive into a fun new year. We look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

CSE 466 and 467 – consider enrolling

Dear Computer Science & Engineering major:

There are two courses being offered this fall that we want to call to
your attention.
Please consider including these in your fall schedule.  They make
excellent senior electives for CS majors and are an important part of
the intellectual center for CompE majors.

CSE466: Software for Embedded Systems – Bruce Hemingway

Microprocessors pervade our everyday life from implanted medical
devices to anti-lock brakes to robots.  Take CSE466 to learn how these
devices are programmed and how code can interact with real world
physical objects – not just data objects in memory. Programming these
systems poses interesting challenges in performance for real-time
operation, security and safety considerations, network communications,
and user interfaces. The class project will have students implement
their own physical device.

CSE467: Advanced Digital Design – Gabriel Cohn

How you ever wondered how the Xbox Kinect and other computer vision
systems can compute complicated algorithms on large data sets in
real-time? Take CSE 467 to learn how to dramatically accelerate an
algorithm by implementing it on custom hardware! Such hardware
acceleration is commonly used for high speed computations in computer
vision, artificial intelligence, computational biology, and finance.
The class project will allow students will implement a highly
optimized computer vision algorithm on an FGPA.

Thanks,
Gaetano Borriello
Undergraduate Program Faculty Coordinator
