Student Advisory Council and ACM-W Vulnerability Panel Discussion

Beneath the Surface: a panel discussion on failure and vulnerability–Join SAC and ACM-W for an evening of open and honest conversation surrounding failure and vulnerability.

You’ve probably heard multiple times that failure is a great opportunity and it isn’t something to be afraid or ashamed of.  However, CSE has developed a culture of being extremely ambitious, and handling failure among a community of such high-performing peers is particularly difficult.  Our high-achieving community can lead to lots of us feeling inadequate and that we don’t belong here. Often in CSE we overhear people talking about their accomplishments, but rarely do we talk about our experiences with failure (and, shocking as it may be, every single one of us has failed at some point).

We hope to decrease the stigma our department faces regarding failure and vulnerability through a panel of highly respected people and through small group discussions.  We also hope that you will reflect on your own relationships with failure and vulnerability in this event. By RSVPing you are agreeing that you can stay for the duration of the event.  As this is a discussion-based event, it is crucial that if you attend, you stay the entire time.  Open to all CSE students.

You can see the flyer here.  If you haven’t already, respond to our poll posters in the CSE2 undergraduate commons!

Dinner provided.

What is the SAC? We are a CSE student-run organization and our aim is to foster a positive learning environment for our peers by hosting events and discussion forums. We use input from you, the students, to guide our conversations with staff and faculty which ultimately lead to improvements in the school.

SAC and ACM-W are committed to ensuring that our events are accessible for all students and is happy to arrange disability accommodations for students (with advanced notice). Please reach out to csesac@cs.uw.edu if you have any questions or requests. Please note that we occasionally may not be able to fulfill a specific request, but will do the very best we can to ensure you have a positive experience at our event!
