All CSE exchanges operate under the Home Tuition Program (you pay UW tuition, not tuition at your host school). Tuition is billed normally. One semester = 1.5 quarters of UW tuition, and a full year = 3 quarters of tuition.
Students must concurrently enroll and pay a UW IP&E fee ($610) to maintain these benefits while away:
- Concurrent enrollment (students will be registered for 12 credits of FSTDY 300)
- Financial aid and scholarship eligibility
- Graded UW credit for coursework completed abroad
- Pre-registration privileges at the UW
- Continued deferment of school-related loans
- Satisfaction of residency graduation requirements
Additional costs:
- Mandatory Insurance (required by UW): $37 per month
- Mandatory Insurance (required by exchange institution): varies, similar to the UW cost
- Books, food, housing expenses, travel expenses, etc: varies; see exchange webpages for links to more info
Application & Selection Process
Study abroad applications for CSE exchanges in 2015-16 will be due February 2, 2015.
The application requires a brief statement of interest and a review of your academic record and background by faculty and advisors.
Ideally, students will spend their junior year at the exchange institution and return to UW for their senior year (and capstone, if CE). However, senior year exchanges are also possible. English-language courses abroad are mostly equivalent to 400-level CSE courses, so you should complete all/most 300-level requirements prior to going on the exchange. Courses are taught in English, so language proficiency is not a requirement.
If Selected
You will be notified of our decision by February 11. Selected students have until February 25th to commit to their exchange, at which point we must send UW IPE final information on all exchanges for the next year.
After you commit to your exchange, you will be responsible for a number of tasks to finalize all details. Each student must submit an official application to their host school (mostly a formality) and follow up with UW IPE to set-up concurrent enrollment and sign the exchange contract.
