The CSE departmental graduation event will take place on June 12th in Meany Hall from 9-1030am with a reception in the Paul G. Allen Center for CS&E from 1030-1130ish.  For our event, no tickets are required, just show up with a smile.  Most students wear cap and gown, but business casual is also appropriate if you are not planning on walking in the UW ceremony. More info will follow.

If  you haven’t filed to graduate yet (i.e. there is no projected graduation date on your MyCSE main page), contact me ASAP and I’ll check to see if everything is in place.

Dear Colleagues,

The results of the Putnam Competition have just arrived with great

news: Will Johnson has placed in the top five and has been named a

Putnam Fellow. Will is a joint Math and CS major. He is the first UW

student to win a Putnam Fellowship since the competition was initiated

in 1938.

Please join me in congratulating Will for this remarkable achievement.

This year’s UW participants again benefited from a Math 480 course and

other Putnam preparation efforts that were led by Ioana Dumitriu and

Julia Pevtsova.

There were 4036 participants in the competition. In addition to Will,

four UW students, Nate Bottman, Steven Rutherford, Song Yisong, Keyun

Tong, placed in the top 500. Congratulations to all the students for

their success.

To: cs-grads@cs.washington.edu, cs-staff <cs-staff@cs.washington.edu>,
faculty <faculty@cs.washington.edu>, dub@dub.washington.edu,
change@change.washington.edu

Join the Change Seminar during the Spring quarter on Thursdays at noon
in the Paul Allen Center (Room 203).
Change (http://change.washington.edu) is a group of faculty, students,
and staff at the UW who are exploring the role of information and
communication technologies (ICT) in improving the lives of underserved
populations, especially in the developing world.

Next quarter, we are continuing our one credit seminar (CSE590C1, SLN:
19341). The seminar is available for all UW students and the content
is designed to be widely accessible. We encourage students from all
departments to enroll if interested.

We will have a number of speakers and discussion topics lined up, so
stay tuned to our calendar (http://is.gd/3PkTF), Twitter
(http://is.gd/3PkVk), or mailing list (http://is.gd/3PlkS) for more
information. There will also be opportunities for those interested in
presenting ongoing work to gather feedback from the group.

Please forward this message to the relevant mailing lists (especially
non-CSE) and we hope to see you on Thursday 4/1 at noon in PAC 203

Student Paper Contest Announcement from IEEE

Want a chance to win up to $800? Do you have papers cluttering your hard-drive from final projects, research projects or internships? Then submit an abstract to the IEEE Seattle Section Student Paper Contest by this weekend! The important thing to note is that the paper can be any technically related paper — it doesn’t need to be a new work!

The IEEE Regions have annual contests for students to demonstrate their writing and presentation skills. This year, we will have our third consecutive contests for students here in the Seattle Section, hosted at the UW.

To submit an abstract, or the full paper, send an email to Joe Decuir at jdecuir@ieee.org.

Full rules for the contest can be found at: http://ieee-seattle.org/details/2010-04-10_students.html
