To: Ed Lazowska <lazowska@cs.washington.edu>

Hi Ed,

I recently accepted a job as the VP of Finance for zulily, inc.  We’re

an ecommerce company founded by some former Blue Nile executives

(including Blue Nile’s founder and Chairman, Mark Vadon).  Though we

didn’t start operations until late January, we are experiencing rapid

growth.  We realize that we need to make significant investments in

our platform and need smart, motivated developer-types.  I thought I

would reach out to you in case you know of people who are “in the

market.”

The job descriptions are up on our website.  www.zulily.com

If you know of anyone, feel free to send them directly to me.  My work

email is amerola@zulily.com.

Come play softball in the summer!

Come play softball in the summer!

I sent this out two weeks ago and already have some great responses. So far we have 7 guys and 5 girls, and we definitely need more as not everyone can make it to every game and summer has many temptations. Thanks to everyone who’s already joined the team and if you have just finished your last final exam/project today, perhaps you would want to consider spending 2 hours a week playing softball with us? 🙂

The registration is due June 23th and game starts on week of June 28th. I’ll probably go register next week, but you can join on the team any time before the 2nd game (week of July 5th I believe). And even though it’s a league and there’s competition, all that is required to join the team is the urge to hit a ball and run.

Send me an email if you’re interested or have questions. Happy summer everyone!

It’s almost summer and the ima softball league is going to be lots of fun! The info is already out:

Game starts June 28. I’m organizing the co-rec team, so the game times are either Mon, Tue, or Thu with two available times, 5:15PM or 6:30PM. We need as many girls and guys as we can and I assure you it’ll be worth playing. The weather is going to be great, you’ll get to hit, run, shout, scream, jump, roll, flip, maybe fly, and most importantly, you don’t have to do research for at least 2 hours a week 🙂

If you can’t make the game times but still want to play, we’ll be planning batting cages and field practice on weekends. Just let me know if you’re interested.

10 weeks, 6 production level games

In this quarter’s Games Capstone class teams were presented with a challenge to produce a full featured video game released in the wild, on major game distribution sites such as Kongregate and newgrounds so that their creations can be evaluated in the real world.

I am happy to report that the games are now out, you can see all of them here.  Give them a try, they cover a variety of genres.

More interestingly the games gathered significant praise from the players around the world.  Here I list some of the outcomes (new ones arriving hourly):

–    Around a million players played all games in total in last 3 weeks

–    Two games had full featured reviews by a site that reviews a few noteworthy games each week. You can read the two reviews here: http://jayisgames.com/archives/2010/05/chromatic.php and http://jayisgames.com/archives/2010/06/hello_worlds.php

–    The publicized games have now over 10 contract offers for distribution at different game sites, as well as offers for additional funding to develop the game for other platforms.

–    Hello Worlds! Game has won two monetary prizes: a second place, in the best game of the week, and the second/third best game of the month (even though it has been out only for the last week of May) on Kongregate.com.  This is particularly impressive given, that the competition is games with real budgets, and high quality production including the licensing rights for Wallace & Gromit branding.

–    as of last Sat, hello worlds is now a #1 featured game on Kongregate!

–    This week, Defenders of the Light and Time Decay are competing for the best game of the week honor at Kongregate.com

–    The teams collectively earned a significant amount of revenue through awards, commissions, and distribution contracts, which will likely continue beyond the class.

Critical Vulnerability in Some Adobe Products

Critical vulnerabilities have been publicized, and are being exploited,

in these widely-used Adobe products: Flash Player, Adobe Reader, and

Acrobat. The impact of these vulnerabilities could be severe: should you

visit a dodgy website, or open a malevolent PDF file, attackers could

gain control of your system.

For Flash Player, a patch is due from Adobe in a couple of days (please

apply it when alerted); for Reader and Acrobat, in three weeks. The lab

has taken (or will shortly take) action to protect systems we manage. On

systems you manage, you may choose to simply excercise extra caution, or

you may choose to take mitigating action.

Details, including how to mitigate, are here:

So you think you can multitask?

Subject: [cs-ugrads] So you think you can multitask?
Importance: Low

Somewhat regularly I run into people who explain that their multitasking skills allow them to focus on what is going on in class or at a meeting or even at lunch in spite of listening to their iGadget, fiddling with their laptop, and/or doing other things at the same time.  This usually seems not to be the case, but then maybe it’s just that I’m getting older and find it hard to concentrate on anything myself if I’m dealing with constant interruptions.

Or maybe not.  There are a couple of interesting articles in the NYTimes about multitasking, gadgets, and their effects on the brain.  Worth a look.

(OK, I’ll stop interrupting now….)

More on the Herons… although you should really be studying for finals.

Subject: [cs-ugrads] Fwd: More Heron babies of the Sylvan Grove

Besides Bruce’s ongoing photo album, there are also the following three

*live* views of the herons:

1. http://www.cs.washington.edu/heroncam redirects to a cambot located

on the sixth floor that watches the nest. This one is simple: point your

web browser at that URL and enjoy. There are three selectable preset

positions: a view zoomed into the nestlings, a wide view, and a view

that includes the attending parent. Bruce Hemingway helped set that up.

2. CSE staffer Fred Videon has established an HD video feed from the

same sixth-floor location that is truly stunning– if you are on a

network that supports multicast. Basically, that means most “research

networks” such as the one on campus and at some large companies, but

almost certainly not your home internet service. This one is less simple

to use, but if you have the cross-platform open-source VLC viewer

installed, you can do it thus:

1. Open the viewer.

2. Select “open network stream” from the Media menu.

3. Select UDP as the protocol, 233.0.73.67 as the IP address, and

1234 as the port (that’s the default).

4. Click “Play.”

If it displays, you are good; if not, probably you aren’t in a location

that supports multicast.

3. Your own eyeballs! Work best from a high floor at the EE end of the

building. An excuse to visit your advisor?
