New change to UW Degree Requirements for double majors/double degrees

The University of Washington recently approved changes that could have an effect your graduation requirements. Please read this email thoroughly. If you already have a degree application on file with the University, you can go by the old rules, anyone else must go by the rules we list here.

UW offers a few types of degrees, including Bachelor’s of Science and Bachelor’s of Arts. One additional type of degree is a “named” degree, where the major is listed on the diploma as part of the degree title – for example: Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Engineering.

Degrees granted in the College of Arts & Sciences are all titled “Bachelor of Arts” or “Bachelor of Science;” the major is not listed on the diploma.  In the College of Engineering, all degrees are “named” degrees: “Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering.”

The University has just approved the following policy change: if a student pursues two majors of the same name and type (for example: “Bachelor of Science” with a math major, and “Bachelor of Science” with a computer science major), the student may now only receive one degree with a Double Major. Students can no longer earn a Double Degree with two majors of the same type (ex: two BS degrees, even in different colleges).

If a student pursues two majors of different types or names (for example, a “Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Engineering” and a “Bachelors of Science” in math), the student must still pursue a Double Degree. This has not changed.

For most of you that means:

CS + another BS in the College of Arts and Sciences: Double Major, not a Double Degree

CS + EE, BioE, or any other Engineering: still a Double Degree, since all engineering degrees are “named” degrees, meaning the major is listed on the diploma

CE + anything else: a Double Degree, since (again) Computer Engineering is part of the degree name.

Let us know if you have questions.
