Announcements from UW’s Engineers Without Borders

Below is a message from the UW’s Engineers Without Borders student chapter. Note that this org is open to non-engineers (meaning CS majors are welcome to participate).

Hello Engineers and Pre-Engineers!

Now that classes are back in full swing, it is also time for EWB-UW to start off another great year! The EWB-UW chapter is coming off an extremely successful year, with well over $60,000 raised to support the projects in Bolivia. The funds were used during this last summer to build about 55 roofs and stoves for the Tuquiza community, to implement a new potable water system for the Yanayo Grande community, and to construct a new irrigation system for the people of Yanayo Chico. The chapter’s great success in fundraising last year also helped with the travel costs for the seven UW students who were on the implementation trip. Numerous other students were instrumental in the design work, fundraising efforts, and organizational leadership of the chapter, and it was simply impressive to see so many students come together to help improve the lives of people who live thousands of miles away.

Now here are some pressing announcements:

1) Our annual Fall Kick-off meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 14 at 4:30 PM in More Hall 220! At this meeting, you will:

  • Hear a little about the most recent Bolivia project work
  • Have the chance to immediately join a design team in one of our inaugural Partner Projects!
  • Meet our two new faculty advisors and the current chapter officers
  • Learn about ways to become involved with EWB-UW this year

We are very excited to start off another year of fundraising, project design, and event planning, but the chapter needs YOUR energy, time, and enthusiasm to continue the past success! We hope you will come to the Fall Kick-off meeting to see how we would like to get you involved (or to continue your involvement) during this year! Please bring a friend, spread the word, and remember: Non-Engineers are always welcome!

2) This is a little bit of a short notice, but EWB-UW is participating in the EWB Puget Sound Professional Partners Fall Fundraiser

(http://ewb-pugetsound.org/evening2009) on Thursday, October 8 from 6-8 PM at the Lake Union Naval Reserve. Tickets for students are $15, but you can get in for free if you volunteer! If you are interested, email volunteer@ewb-pugetsound.org immediately. Volunteers must wear a white top and black slacks/skirt. They are particularly asking for help setting up (3 PM – 6 PM) and/or tearing down (8 PM – 9:30 PM), but also need help during the event hours.

3) As indicated in the first announcement, we have two new faculty advisors. Our past advisors – Susan Bolton and Mark Benjamin – are coincidentally both on sabbatical this year, and their dedication, vision, intuition, and guidance will surely be missed. Fortunately for the chapter, Mark and Susan will return next year and two new faculty members have joined the chapter! They are Larry Ricker from the Chemical Engineering Department and Steve Muench from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. We are lucky to have Larry and Steve join our team, as they bring a variety of resources and fresh perspectives to the chapter. I encourage you to introduce yourself to them at the Fall Kick-off meeting or during one of our General Meetings.

4) As in years past, please visit the EWB-UW webpage

(http://students.washington.edu/ewbuw) for meeting times/locations. We expect to have 1 general meeting every month and open Executive Committee

(EC) meetings every 1-2 weeks. If you must miss the Fall Kick-off meeting, I encourage you to keep an eye on the website and your email inbox for future meeting announcements.

I look forward to another successful year with EWB-UW, and am excited by the worthwhile work we have ahead of us.
Cheers,
Mark
