(***First Meeting will be April 16th***)

Ever wondered what kind of problems other grad students are working on? Wanna know how they went about tackling those problems? CSE 590K is a venue through which grad students, especially younger ones, can connect with senior students across
different research areas to learn about doing research in computer science. The seminar is targeted towards new grad students and advanced undergrads* who are interested in research in CS (though all are welcome).

The first n weeks (n ~ number of senior grad students we get) will be dedicated to 20 minute talks/Q&A sessions with your fellow (senior) grad students who have gone through a research project.  Grad students from many different CS disciplines have
volunteered to meet and share their experiences (we may even bring in some recent grads).  The discussions will be in the context of a project they have completed, but will likely be more about the process than the actual technical details.  This can include anything from coming up with the idea to evaluating it, recovering from failures, writing a paper, and so on, all from the perspective of a certain project/discipline.

We’ll also spend some time on specific things you will probably need to learn at some point to be an effective researcher.  This will be open to whatever participants are interested in but may include:
– Picking projects
– Writing effective papers/proposals
– Reviewing papers
– Evaluating ideas
– Getting money
– Research in groups

The seminar will be fairly informal with 1 unit credit / no-credit.

If you have any questions, or are already thinking of topics that you want covered please email us.  A course website with speaker schedule will be up soon.

* Undergrads, please email before registering

Hope to see many of you there,

-Eytan and Kayur
