Subject: [cs-ugrads] Intel Lab Open House today!
To: cs-grads@cs.washington.edu, cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu
Just a reminder that the Intel research lab has an open house today. It’s located on the 6th floor of the building at the corner of 45th and 11th, just a short walk through the rain. You’ll be able to see some very cool demos showing work that’s been done by many of your fellow grad and undergrad students. Among others, we’ll show a robot playing chess, an interactive Lego playing system, interactive 3D mapping, and 3D Avatar-like virtual flythroughs of the lab.
And, there’ll be food!! So please stop by any time between 3pm and 6pm.
Cheers,Dieter
Open House at Intel Labs Seattle on Monday, November 1, 2010 |
|
– Monday, November 1, 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. |
|
The lab is located on the 6th floor of 1100 NE 45th St, Seattle, three blocks from the main University of Washington campus. The open house will include posters and demonstrations of key research projects, opportunities to meet researchers, students and faculty, and refreshments.
Founded in 2001, Intel Labs Seattle is an exploratory research lab that is part of the Academic Programs and Research arm of Intel Labs. We are a center of excellence in Context-Aware Sensor-Driven Systems. Our researchers develop techniques that enable computer systems to be fully aware of their environments and to interact seamlessly with their users. We drive this agenda from a user-centered viewpoint, forming interdisciplinary projects, creating prototypes of novel devices and systems, and evaluating use in realistic settings. Our lab is based on an innovative model of industry-university research that includes a deep collaborative relationship with the nearby University of Washington, as well as Intel product groups. Our research staff is recognized as leaders in sensing and wireless devices, robotics, mobile networks and systems, computer vision, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction.
During the last year, ILS researchers have worked on topics that include: sensing, vision and perception for context awareness; depth-cameras for 3D modeling and interaction; sensor systems that preserve user privacy; game playing robot manipulators; and wirelessly powered devices. This year’s open house will display these projects and more. |
We look forward to welcoming you in November!

In the FWIW department….
In the midst of Halloween weekend, midterms, hang-overs from affiliates week, SIGMOD deadlines, and more, there’s an election on Tuesday and ballots have to be mailed by then. We’re going to live with the results of this one for years, so it would be worth digging out the ballot from the bills and other junk that’s shown up in the mailbox over the last couple of weeks and sending it in.
And while you’re at it, be sure to vote yes on Propo@#$#$%^$@

Subject: John Hennessy talk on Tuesday
To: Faculty <faculty@cs.washington.edu>, Cs-Grads <cs-grads@cs.washington.edu>, Cs-Ugrads <cs-ugrads@cs.washington.edu>
I’d like to remind everyone of John Hennessy’s talk in our
Distinguished Lecturer Series on Tuesday at 3:30 in the Microsoft
Atrium.
Hennessy is a god: one of the leading computer architects of the past
several decades, and the president of Stanford.
He will be speaking about the future of research universities rather
than about computer architecture. I guarantee you that this talk will
be worth your time.

Thanks to all of you for the phenomenal turnout for Affiliates — the
talks on Wednesday afternoon, the posters/demos on Wednesday evening,
and the job fair on Thursday.
We had more than 200 local alums join our affiliates for the
posters/demos on Wednesday evening — students from all degree
programs (bachelors, masters, professional masters, and doctorate) and
all years (I saw folks from as early as 1971 and as recent as last
year). It was a home run evening.
Today, just about EVERY recruiter said this was the best job fair they
had attended this year — far better than Berkeley’s or Stanford’s,
for example. Two reasons: First, it’s just CSE (these companies want
computer scientists and computer engineers); second, UW CSE students
really knocked their socks off.
Thanks again!!

Environmental Innovation Practicum: SmartGrid – Is it “Smart enough”?
Peter Christensen (Battelle’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory)
Tuesday, November 2
Johnson Hall 175, 4:30-5:50 p.m.
“Smart Grid” adds substantial IT “smarts” to bring digital intelligence, real-time communications, and control throughout the power system to operate the electricity-supply grid as never before. This is interdisciplinary work at its best–a cutting edge discussion of how clean-tech, engineering, policy, and business models are intertwined and why it’s important to understand the implications of each.
Open to all…
