Please check out CSE 390L, a one-credit undergraduate seminar for CSE majors only, offered Spring Quarter:

http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/courses/cse390l/11sp/

The basic idea:

– Meets weekly for an hour
– Brings brings CSE alumni and friends to campus to describe how to be effective in a startup, small company, large company, or less common environment.  Guests will discuss topics such as:

How do you position yourself to work on interesting projects?
In a large company, what strategies can make you influential, vs. a cog in a wheel?
What is life like in a startup?
If your goal is to start and grow your own company, where do you begin?
What are the pros and cons of less common career options, such as teaching high school computer science?

Weekly Reminders: VMWare, RIM, Winterfest

Hi All,

Here is the week of ACM related things:

1.) VMWare Info Session

When: Tue, February 15, 5:30pm – 6:30pm
Where: Atrium
Description: We can’t virtualize YOU, so consider joining our team today! VMware maintains a deep connection to its academic roots. We recognize that today’s students are tomorrow’s trailblazers and appreciate the opportunity to benefit from your fresh perspective while sharing our experience with you. VMware (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in cloud infrastructure, delivers customer-proven virtualization solutions that significantly reduce IT complexity. VMware accelerates an organization’s transition to cloud computing, while preserving existing IT investments and enabling more efficient, agile service delivery without compromising control. Come hang out and get a download of VMware at jobs.vmware.com VMware Campus Relations.

2.) RIM Tech Talk

When: Wed, February 16, 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Where: CSE Atrium
Description: RIM is a dynamic mobile company, come find out what they have to say about their latest technologies and joining the team!!!  It should be fun!

NOTE: As a gentle reminder, Company info sessions and tech talks exist as a benefit to the students and companies involved.  It is extremely disrespectful to the Company Presenters, ACM Officers, and CSE Department to “dine and dash”, that is get food and leave the talk shortly or immediately without staying to get something out of event.  This makes the department look bad to the company and can negatively influence the willingness of the company to come back next quarter or next year.  We will be watching out for this in the future!

3.) ACM Winterfest!

When: Fri, February 18th, 6:00pm-9:00pm.
Where: CSE Atrium
Cost: Free for ACM members, $6 for everyone else

What better way to start off the long Weekend! There will be food, drinks, boardgames, music, dancing, Kinnects, and Fun!  We will also be selling more T-Shirts.  Yahoo is the sponsor for the event. Also, Winterfest requires lots of set up and take down effort, if you are interested in helping out your help would be greatly appreciated.  If you are interested contact an ACM officer or show up 30-45 before the event starts or at the end to give us a hand.

Have a great week,

ACM Officers

Free pizza at IBM/Watson event this Tuesday

IBM is buying us pizza.  Although the program starts at 7:00, the pizza starts at 6:30.  EE105.

We will host a viewing of the 2nd of the 3 IBM Watson Jeopardy games,  on the 15th, starting at 7:00 p.m. and running until 8:15 p.m.  We’ll Slingbox the HD television video onto the screen in the normal colloquium room, EE105.  (Thanks to Aaron Timss for rigging this up.)

Oren Etzioni, Luke Zettlemoyer, Eric Horvitz (MSR), and some local folks from IBM will provide some technical background prior to the game itself, a brief analysis afterwards, and plentiful wisecracks during.  (The game itself is 7:30-8:00.)

Like IBM’s assault on chess in 1997, this is a landmark accomplishment — win, lose, or draw.

There was a very nice NY Times Sunday Magazine article last June (in contrast to the lame-ass philosophical hand-wringing in today’s paper):

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/20/magazine/20Computer-t.html

Please join us.  This should be fun and educational.

Summer research at Texas A&M

Texas A&M is offering a summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, which will be held from June 1 to August 5 in College Station.  The theme is Interdisciplinary Research on Imaging and Biomarkers.  The application can be found at: http://etidweb.tamu.edu/hsieh/REU.

Activities will include joining a research group led by a faculty mentor, completion of a 10-week research project, and participation in weekly faculty seminars, field trips, and career development workshops.  Students will write a report and present their research to their REU cohort and at an REU poster session on campus. They will also be strongly encouraged to polish their reports after completing the program, with a view toward presenting at a national conference and/or publishing in an academic journal.

Each participant will receive a stipend of $450/week for ten weeks. Other benefits include allowances for housing, meals and round trip travel to College Station; 1.0 credit hour of undergraduate course credit; and full access to university recreational facilities.

Criteria for selection include:

  • Desire to participate in research as evidenced by application responses and faculty recommendation;
  • Completion of at least the sophomore year of the curriculum for an academic major in engineering, computer science, or the life sciences;
  • GPA of 3.00 or above (exceptions may be made based on review of an applicant’s last 60 hours of coursework);
  • Citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. or its possessions;
  • Plan to graduate no earlier than December 2011.

Students who have limited opportunities to participate in research on their home campuses or who are from groups traditionally underrepresented in engineering and science are highly encouraged to apply.

New ugrad/bsms webpages are live

Hey everyone,

Just a heads up that we launched the re-organized Ugrad and BS/MS webpages today.

Ugrad: http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/ugrad/

BS/MS: http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/bsms/

We *hope* the new site will be easier to navigate, but if there is something you can’t find that was on the old site, or you find a page redirecting to the old pages, please let us know ASAP so we can help.  We’d also love your feedback, positive or critical, so we can continue to improve things overall.

A big thank you to our newest advisor, Elise, who helped make this happen, we couldn’t have done it without her.

Sincerely,

CSE Advising: Crystal, Megan, Raven and Elise
