CHID course on robotics and other “uncanny” stuff

If you’re looking for 2 more non-CSE credits for spring, check out this Comparative History of Ideas course!

Information on course plus creepy images

From: Lisa Turner <lkturner@u.washington.edu>
Subject: CHID focus group: The Uncanny in Film, Fiction, and Technology

Hello,

I’m co-facilitating a focus group (CHID 496 L) in the spring about the Uncanny in film, fiction, and technology. The study of robotics, both the treatments of it in science fiction as well as real technologies being engineered today, play a large part in the discussion of the uncanny. I thought that this might perhaps be of interest to some CSE students! We’ll be meeting Fridays from 1:30-3:20. Info flier is attached.

Could you please forward this info along to your students?

Thanks,
Lisa

ACM Officer Elections

Hi everyone,

It’s that time of the year again… Yes, our reign as Tyrannical ACM officers is coming to a close…  as many of us will be graduating we need
to elect new ACM and ACM-W officers!

That is where you come in!  This is a great oppertunity to take on a Leadership roll and get more involved in the department! Nominate people you think are worthy to take the reigns of ACM by going to: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/jtmasaki/127261 This survey is anonymous and can be taken as many times as you like for each person you wish to nominate.  Please submit nominations by Thursday March 17th. A great ACM officer is a good Leader, fast at typing (you will send and answer many emails), willing to take responsibility for ugrad/department manners, and enthusiastic to make CSE a better place for all!

For now we are just seeking at large nominations.  Although the officer positions will be roughly the same as this year, (President, VP, Internal Relations, Membership Coordinator, Treasurer x 2, Webmaster), there is discussion to modify the responsibility of the roles slightly and add a 1-2 more positions.  On Tuesday 3/29 at a time TBA, the first tuesday of spring quarter, we will have a ACM General Members meeting to introduce the candidates   (There will be free pizza!)

Starting that Wednesday we will start opening polls to elect officers, there will be one election per day, and elections will continue on into the second week of the quarter.  Candidates will get an email closer to spring break with more details about the exact positions.

Happy Studying,
Your Outgoing ACM Officers

Things should start feeling cozier in the Atrium…the heat curtain has been installed.  We’ll be tweaking things in the next week, but it already feels much better (even Sofia is happy).

The unit is a little noisy, but we’ll be able to turn it off during events, and during the warm months.

CSE 477 capstone (Digital System Design) – open to CS and CE (hardware &software) students

Pre-reqs have been adjusted for 477, see below:

From the 477 instructor: Shwetak Patel <shwetak@cs.washington.edu>

We will be offering the CSE 477 capstone (Digital System Design) again this Spring. This class will count towards the degree requirements for both hardware and software track CompE students.

The aim of the class is give students an opportunity to work on a full quarter long project that incorporates hardware and software. Students are welcome to propose their own projects, but this year’s theme will include working on the Parrot AR Drones. We have access to a number of these drones as well as some of the firmware. The projects for this quarter will entail adding new custom sensing capabilities, software, and firmware for outdoor autonomous flight applications.

We used the AR Drones for EE 472 this quarter. In CSE 477, we are going to dig much deeper into these platforms and build custom hardware and software.

EE472 class website: http://abstract.cs.washington.edu/~shwetak/classes/ee472/
AR Drone Information: http://ardrone.parrot.com/parrot-ar-drone/usa

Pre-requisites:
The required pre-requisite is CSE 466 or EE 472. Students should contact the instructor if they have any questions about prerequisites.

If you are interested in taking this course, but have a time conflict, please notify the instructor.

CoE Scholarship Application for CSE Majors

Hi all,

The scholarship application for our awards from the College of Engineering is now online: http://www.engr.washington.edu/curr_students/scholarships.html. CSE has two awards to grant this cycle, and the deadline to apply is April 1. Both CS and CE students are eligible for these awards for the 2011-2012 academic year.

One of the scholarships is merit-based and the other is based on financial need (requires FAFSA). If you wish to be considered for both, and you have financial need, you’ll want to make sure you have a FAFSA on file.

This Week: Yahoo! Hack U

Yahoo! is coming to campus this week to hold their annual Hack U competition. There will be talks held on Wednesday and Thursday focusing on mobile development, accessibility and Javascript. The week culminates in a twenty-four hour hack-a-thon running from Noon on Friday until Noon on Saturday.
The hack-a-thon is comprised of teams made up of any number of students. The teams compete against each other building whatever they may imagine. Dinner, snacks and breakfast will be provided throughout the hack-a-thon. Each team will have a chance to present their work to their peers and a panel of judges. The judges will select winning teams and award prizes. The first place team will be awarded three iPads.
Amazon is offering free AWS credits for participating teams. Code for America is sending a representative from the local Seattle government to talk about interesting challenges and data they’d like to see developers working on.
This competition is especially great because there is really no limit to what teams can do. You can see what teams have done in the past here: http://developer.yahoo.com/hacku/show/2010/feb/washington
