Ugrad CSE T-Shirt Design Contest!

Hey Ugrads,

Now that tech talks are winding down you’re not hearing, as much from us….

But, we have an opportunity for you!  Have you ever noticed geeky-tech-fabulous in house T-Shirts older CSE majors wear around on occasion? Ever thought of an epic T-Shirt idea you want to show the (cse)  world!  Then now is your chance! We want YOU to create the most clever hilarious 1337 (elite) shirts you can think of.  Your creation could join the ranks of the CSE classics such as the One Root Ugrad Tree, Cat, or “MAN Shirt”.  We want these designs no later than Tuesday, April 26th by 11:59pm. Designs can be submitted to this catalyst dropbox

https://catalyst.uw.edu/collectit/assignment/stever4/15452/58535

Here is the fine print:

  • The designs must be scalable, ie, a PDF or PSD, not compressed separated by color
  • We will not accept any design with more than 2 simple colors (ie Black, White, Blue, Green, Red, etc…)
  • We strongly encourage 1 color designs (to keep costs down for not very large orders)
  • Your design can have a front and back component.
  • You may choose the T-Shirt color (within reason, please try to keep it to basic colors)
  • We will try to get American Apparel shirts since that is what people mostly prefer!
  • We have the right to modify your design slightly to make it printable, we will tell you if we need to do this.

And the selection process

  • We will have both girl and guy styles and sizes of shirts, make sure the design is generally accepted!
  • We will consider all T-Shirt designs for printing
  • We will then send an electronic preorder form (this will act as a design vote)
  • If your design get’s a reasonable number of preorders, and the orders/cost ratio works out, it will be printed and sold. Surplus shirts will likely be purchased for future sales depending on number of preorders and awesomeness of the shirt
  • We hope to have shirts in and distributed at the CSE BBQ on May 20th, but we can’t guarantee anything!

Remember the best designs are simple, clever, humorous, and make us proud to be CSE Majors!

Looking forward to awesome T-Shirt designs!!!!

Seeking interested students for new student group: Students for the Exploration and Development of Space

From: Kristina Wang <wangkl@aa.washington.edu>

Are you interested in promoting space exploration amongst your peers, K-12 students, and the global community?  Are you looking to network and make connections for your dream job in the space industry?  Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) is an international organization that sounds up your alley! SEDS pursues this mission by educating people about the benefits of space, by supporting a network of interested students, by providing an opportunity for members to develop their leadership skills, and inspiring people through our involvement in space-related projects.

SEDS provides an excellent environment in which to obtain access to many sources of information including speakers, tours, films, discussion groups & NASA updates.  It is also a community in which people of common interests can relax and freely discuss issues important to them.

I am planning on reviving the SEDS chapter at UW, and I’m looking for people to help me with this venture in starting and sustaining it!  If you are interested in being a part of the group and/or being an officer, please email me at wangkl@uw.edu.
Additionally, the annual conference this year will be held at University of Colorado at Boulder over the last weekend of October, and I would like to send some students to go.  This will be a great time to network, learn, and have fun, as well as enjoy the tales of Bill Nye, the keynote speaker!
Please contact me with any questions or interest!

Thanks,

Kristina Wang

Berico Tech Talk, “Greening-up-the-Labs”, and reminders

Hey all,

A few random things…

0.) Berico Tech Talk

When: Wednesday April 13th (Tomorrow), 6:00pm-7:30pm

Where: CSE Atrium

What: Is SQL Dead? Please join Berico Technologies Senior Engineer Soup Shah as he explores the use of traditional Relational Databases vs. the new NoSQL/Cloud database approach. Discussions will take a high level approach before diving into the internals of the question and examining when is an appropriate time to use each one of the two paradigms. Following discussion of the main topic, Soup will answer any questions regarding cloud computing as well as its application in the national security arena. Food and beverages will be provided by Berico Technologies.  www.bericotechnologies.com   Presented by Sapan “Soup” Shah.

This company is from the East Coast, in D.C.,  (which is pretty rare for a tech talk here, 5 hour flights aren’t fun!) so it might be interesting to drop by.

1.) UW Spring Career Fair

When: Thursday April 14th, 3pm-7pm

Where: Alaska Airlines (no longer Bank of America) Arena

What: It’s UW’s largest career fair. But there are a fair number of tech companies that will be present eager to higher Software Engineers (aka us!).  If you are still looking for a job or internship do stop by! See the list for yourself, http://www.scribd.com/doc/52508971/2011-SCF-Employer-Guide.

2.) Greening-up-the-Labs

We are very fortunate for our printing privilegedes!  Now here is a way to automatically end those pesky cover sheets from printing from linux machines.  Run the following script in linux:

#!/bin/bash
# Sets the ugrad lab printers to print double-sided  without header pages
# Author: Krysta Yousoufian, 10/11/10

# Print double-sided in 002, 003, 006, and 022
lpoptions -p ps002 -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble
lpoptions -p ps003 -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble
lpoptions -p ps006 -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble
lpoptions -p ps022 -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble

# Turn off header pages in 002, 003, 006, and 022
lpoptions -p ps002 -o job-sheets=none
lpoptions -p ps003 -o job-sheets=none
lpoptions -p ps006 -o job-sheets=none
lpoptions -p ps022 -o job-sheets=none

Once again thank Krysta Yousoufian for that tip! (Sorry for the delay… and we are still not sure how to do it automatically for windows!)

3.) Vote!

ACM elections are still going! Please vote!

Event Coordinators: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/jtmasaki/130683 (remember to vote for 2)
External Relations: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/jtmasaki/130685

Please vote by 11:59pm Tuesday April 12th (aka TODAY).

Enjoy the sunshine!

CSE students needed for Ultrasound Research project

——– Forwarded message ———-
From: Ruth Anderson <rea@cs.washington.edu>
Date: Fri, Apr 8, 2011 at 2:46 PM
Subject: CSE students needed for Ultrasound Research project
Cc: Crystal Eney <ceney@cs.washington.edu>
—————————-

A woman dies in childbirth every 70 seconds; the majority of these deaths take place in Africa and Asia.  Ultrasound imaging is an effective tool for identifying maternal mortality risk factors. Unfortunately, ultrasound is nearly absent in many rural health care facilities in developing regions due to the high costs of both equipment and required training. The Mobile Midwives’ Ultrasound project has built a low-cost portable ultrasound system designed specifically for use by midwives with limited medical training in developing regions.

The Mobile Midwives’ Ultrasound project is looking for a couple of CSE undergrads to join our group.  We are an interdisciplinary group consisting of undergrads, grad students and faculty from CSE, HCDE, and Radiology.  We have produced a working prototype of our system which a group including (a CSE undergrad) just got back from testing in Uganda over spring break.

CSE students working on the project can expect to be involved in all aspects of the research process: designing, developing, testing, and traveling to test deployments in the field as well as writing publications about the research. Students should be available to work on the project at least during the 2011-2012 academic year, and preferably during summer 2011 and 2012 and beyond.

If interested, please send email to Ruth Anderson (rea@cs.washington.edu)

More information about the project including publications can be found here:
