Hoarding courses – how to solve this problem?

We’re really at a loss on how to solve the problem of students hoarding courses.  I know that some of you have very good reasons – you’re not the ones we’re referencing.

I just ran the statistics again, and this winter 3 students took 4 CSE courses and 157 took 3 CSE courses (out of over 1300 total students – most take only 1 or 2).  Right now for spring, 21 students are registered for 4 CSE courses and 252 are registered for 3.  That means we have at least 100 spaces in courses that are likely not actually going to be used by the people who are registered.

If at all possible, please try to make up your mind on courses you don’t plan to take. Your fellow students will thank you.

In more positive news we are working hard to adjust course limits for 446 and several 300 level courses, so stay tuned for more openings.

Feel free to write to ugrad-adviser@cs with suggestions on how you think we could fairly remedy this conundrum.

Please don’t enter the lower floor of the building between 11:00 and 2:00 – the hallway outside the auditorium and classrooms, and the stairs up to the first floor. (The robotics lab is fine for those with access.)

AND: There will be screens in the Allen Center atrium and in the Gates Center atrium for those who would like to watch the program, which takes place from 1:30-2:15.

Please read! – Thursday’s Gates Center dedication

From: Ed Lazowska lazowska@cs.washington.edu

Subject: [cs-ugrads] Please read! – Thursday’s Gates Center dedication

There will be some inconveniences on Thursday related to the dedication ceremonies for the Gates Center. Apologies in advance.

  • The Research Commons will be dedicated to event attendees from noon-4. (The 1st floor kitchen will be available for your use.)
  • The elevators will be dedicated to event attendees from noon-4. (Please use the stairs rather than the elevators.)
  • The 4th floor will be dedicated to event attendees. (Check out the 4th floor during the Open House on Friday!)

To be clear, we want our guests to see the building in action! Please use the Gates Center as you normally would, except for the above. And please be friendly to those who wander into your spaces.

Do remember my previous “watch your valuables” email. All cardkey doors will be unlocked on Thursday, and many will be unlocked on Friday. Don’t leave stuff lying around – there will be lots of people wandering around with open access.

Thanks!!

[ACM] Snack Overflow 2.0 Opening

Hello Allen School Students,

The ACM team is excited to announce that Snack Overflow 2.0 is coming tomorrow! We will have an opening event at 1:00pm tomorrow to showcase the new system!

Why the change?

Snack Overflow has had a couple of issues in the past. The check-out system was confusing to use and has periodically crashed. We also had issues with students accumulating too much debt, which means we didn’t have enough money for the following order. Snack Overflow is a student run store. It is not funded by the Allen School, and we depend on the honor system to keep going. We hope that this new system will solve our previous issues and keep Snack Overflow consistently stocked!

What’s different?

We’re going cashless

We are using a new checkout system (Square) that will accept all major credit and debit cards.

New self-checkout system

We’re replacing the old PC with a tablet. Please remember that this is an honor-based system and we rely on you paying for the snacks you take to keep SO stocked! Also, please respect the tablet and avoid damaging it (spills/scratches/drops) as we won’t be replacing it and may have to discontinue SO.

No more debt

We will phase out the Snack Overflow account system. You will not be able to add money to your account and/or accumulate debt with this new system. Instead, just pay as you go. If you have an existing Snack Overflow account with a balance, look for a separate email about your refund (or payment).

Bigger snacks

Since the new Square system requires a $1 minimum purchase, we will be upgrading some of our existing products (example: switching from soda cans to bottles) and also offer bundling options.

If you have any comments or suggestions for Snack Overflow, feel free to email us at acm-officers@cs.washington.edu
