Welcome back! Important notes!

Hey everyone,

Welcome back to the UW. We hope you all had a restful, fun summer.   We have a few notes for you.

1. Prerequisites, some 400 level prerequisites will be changing over the next year. We’ll update you as we learn more, but we’ll also keep it online linked from this page: http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/ugrad/academics/degree_requirements.html     It’s the 5th bullet under Curriculum.  451 will have 333 added as a prereq starting in fall 2012 so that’s one to plan ahead for next year.  333 is also highly recommended before 451 this year.

2.  Check out my previous post for our plea for mentors, we still need a few more.

3. Although we’re happy to see you all again, we’d rather not see you all at once…. therefore if you don’t have something urgent that has to do with fall registration, please try to wait until the 2nd week or so to come see us. Dropins are listed on the calendar and we’ll try to keep those fairly consistent.

4. If you’re graduating this fall quarter, check your MyCSE page to see if there is a ‘projected graduation’ date. If it says fall, great. If not, then you need to see us by Oct 14th.  Winter and spring graduates should come in for graduation appointments Oct 17 – 31st.

That should be all for now, have a great first day back!

Lisp programming seminar for Autumn – biomedical informatics

Contact Professor Kalet if you’re interested.

Subject: Lisp programming seminar for Autumn

Hi Crystal and Lindsay,

I am running a one credit seminar this Autumn in Biomedical Informatics, on the topic of advanced Lisp programming, which may interest a few CSE students.  Both graduate and undergraduate students are welcome.  If it works better for a student to sign up for CSE independent study instead of MEBI 591 that is OK with me.  Here is a rough description:

I will be leading a study group or advanced seminar on LISP and applications in biomedical informatics.  The plan will be that we learn and discuss some really advanced programming topics, like meta-programming, programming with functions, macros, and the like. This is for people who would like to delve deeper into programming ideas and potential applications, not about how to do well known tasks in bioinformatics and the like.  We will meet once a week on Tuesdays, 11 AM to 11:50, and participation would result in one credit (details to be determined).  Although familiarity with the basics of LISP would be expected, people who are new to LISP and willing to learn fast are also welcome.  The emphasis will be on learning exotic stuff and having some fun with programming.

Thanks, and hope you are having a great summer.

Ira

Seattle’s Madrona Venture Group and Perkins Coie Law Firm will be providing free consulting meetings on Wednesday October 5th, 9AM to noon, for anybody in CSE (students, faculty, postdocs, etc.) interesting in learning about or talking about start-up companies, particularly anyone thinking about commercialization who wants more information.  Meetings are informal and anybody is free to sign up.

Both Madrona and Perkins have been involved in a number of successful CSE and UW spinoffs.  They held these sessions several times in the past and had a strong response.   If you’re interested, please book a slot here:

Meetings will be held in the Allen Center atrium.

Capstone Montage video from 2010-2011

Some of you might want to take a look at the Capstone video from 2010-2011.  We highly encourage you to consider a capstone if you’re nearing completion of your 300 level courses.  Most capstones will have some space in them later this year, including the robotics capstone this fall that still has room.

The goal of this practicum is to discover the universe of cleantech solutions to our most pressing environmental challenges and to raise your awareness of how you might be part of that solution.  You’ll form teams around problems you identify, and present your solutions to the class.  Although not required, teams are invited to go on to compete in the fourth UW Environmental Innovation Challenge competition to be held in Seattle March 29, 2012.

The seminar will consist of a selection of required readings and a series of industry experts who will speak on a specific cleantech topic each week. You will work in teams to present a proposed cleantech solution to an environmental problem. The final deliverable for the class is a 5-10 minute presentation.

Required Electronic Text: Reinventing Fire: Bold Business Solutions for the New Energy Era ©2011

Course topics will include:

  •     Environmental challenges and opportunities linked to cleantech.
  •     How to translate an idea into an actual device/product/company (including intellectual property protection)
  •     Market assessment (who would be the customer for this product or service?)
    • Local/national venture capital and angel firms now focused on cleantech endeavors, and other opportunities/resources at UW.

There is incredibly exciting news this evening — our own Shwetak Patel has just been named as a 2011 MacArthur Fellow  —  a recipient of a MacArthur “Genius Award”!     This is an enormous honor and fabulous recognition of Shwetak’s accomplishments.

Congratulations Shwetak!!

Shwetak joins Yoky Matsuoka as CSE’s second MacArthur Fellow in five years — a remarkable record.
