Hey hey,

Recent events in Iran have piqued the interest of many about national censorship and the impact it has on everyday people. Kazakhstan is starting to aggressively filter connections. Many mobile carriers are blocking access to perfectly reasonable websites simply because they are able to do so.

Do these topics interest you?  Are you interested in security, privacy, circumvention of censorship, or anonymity?

A bunch of computer scientists, researchers and hackers are getting together to discuss Tor and related projects in the CSE building for most of next week.

Here’s an idea of the topics we’ll be discussing:

======================= Schedule ==============================

Wednesday:

CSE – Paul Allen building room 303 until 3pm, then over to room 503 until we leave for the day.

Thursday:

CSE – Paul Allen building room 305 until we leave for the day.

Friday may also hold an additional meeting if there is demand.

Here’s the web page for the schedule with additional information. It is likely to be updated frequently over the next few days:

All the best,

333 – restricted to continuing students, new prereq for 451, 461 starting fall 2012

Hello folks,

We wanted to send a brief update on CSE 333 being offered this spring. Registration for 333 this spring will not be open to students who have a graduation application on file for spring or summer quarter.  Registration will open on Monday, Feb. 20th.  Graduating seniors who try to register will be automatically dropped.

CSE 333 will be added as a required prerequisite for CSE 451 and 461 starting this fall quarter, 2012.

The reason we are limiting registration to students not graduating is because we need to save room for students who need the course before next year.

Please note that 333 will also be offered this summer quarter, graduating students are allowed to take it this summer.

Let the advising staff know if you have questions.

Subject: Bicycle Parking Survey

Hello Tracy,

As part of a bicycle parking improvements project, UW Commuter Services is conducting a short survey to learn more about the bicycle parking needs and habits of students, staff, and faculty. We’re asking you, as building coordinator, to consider distributing the following survey link to students and employees in the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science & Engineering:

https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/damiton/153364

Survey results will inform the future of campus bicycle parking options and offerings, and responses will not be shared beyond this project.

Thanks for your help in spreading the word.

Best,

David Amiton

2012 UW Business Plan Competition

We’re asking for your help in getting the word out about the 2012 UW Business Plan Competition and hope that you’ll provide the information below to the students in your classes, those you advise, and any others who might be interested in participating in this year’s competition.  Any degree-seeking college or university student in the state of Washington can submit his/her 5- to 7-page executive summary to the BPC.  More information on the BPC can be found online at: http://www.facebook.com/uwbpc

The UW Business Plan Competition is an opportunity to make serious headway on that great idea you’ve been tossing around for months (or years!). And if you’re already working on your start-up, it’s an excellent way to gain visibility from the community–we have over 350 members of the Seattle entrepreneurial and investment community involved in judging and coaching our competition. The competition is also full of networking opportunities–both with other competitors and the wider Northwest entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Now in its 15th year, the UW Business Plan Competition is designed to bring interdisciplinary teams of students together to promote student start-up ideas and venture creation. Any degree-seeking college or university student in the state of Washington can submit his/her 5- to 7-page executive summary to the BPC.

The Grand Prize is $25,000, and in total the BPC awards $140,000 each year to student teams to fund their companies. 95 student teams have received funding to date, many of which are still going strong, including: Contour, Epic Seats, NanoString Technologies, Cadence Biomedical (formerly EETech), Wander (formerly YongoPal), Stockbox Grocers, Brass Media, and Impel Neuropharma, just to name a few.

The competition takes place in spring quarter, and the deadline to enter is Tuesday, April 3, 2012.  Right now we’re also offering Resource Nights to help students prepare to enter the competition. These workshops provide an opportunity to learn first-hand from local entrepreneurs the essentials of business planning and what it really takes to get a company off the ground. The nine sessions run each Thursday night, January 5 through March 1, from 6-7:50 pm. All sessions are recorded and can be viewed online.

You can learn more about the Business Plan Competition and the Resource Nights on our website.  If you have any questions about the UW Business Plan Competition or the Resource Nights, please contact Sarah Massey, manager of the competition, at masses@uw.edu or 206.685.9868.

Thanks!
