COE and CE Scholarship Application Open – due May 1

The College of Engineering scholarship application for the 2012-2013 academic year is open now. The application will close on May 1 at 5pm.

http://www.engr.washington.edu/curr_students/scholarships.html

CSE takes scholarship applications twice per year. You should apply during this application period if:

  • You are a Computer Engineering major. CSE only has a small amount of awards to give out this application cycle, given to us by the College of Engineering, which means that only CE students are eligible to receive them.
  • You wish to be considered for College of Engineering awards such as Emerging Leaders, etc.: http://www.engr.washington.edu/curr_students/studentprogs/emergingleaders.html (CE and CS majors eligible, be sure to select “College of Engineering” when applying).

The bulk of the 2012-2013 CSE scholarships are awarded during the summer application period (Aug 1-Sept 1). So if you don’t fit into any of the above categories, don’t worry. You have a second chance!

Participate! Research Study on Undergraduate Students in Computing Fields

Dear CSE Students,

With the consent of Professor Levy (CSE Chair) and the department, I am conducting a NSF-funded research study entitled “Exploring the Undergraduate Experience in Computing Education.” I am seeking second-year students (or those who plan to graduate in Spring 2014) to participate.

Participation in the study is voluntary and would involve completing an in-person interview lasting for about an hour, scheduled at your convenience. All student participants will receive a $25 Amazon.com gift card for participating in the study, and may elect to continue with follow-up interviews in the next two academic years. If you are interested in participating, please respond to this email with your availability so that we can schedule a date and time for the interview. I will be on campus next week, March 5-9, and can meet during the day or early evenings.

Thank you in advance for your time and participation in this research project. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you should have any questions about the study.

Sincerely,

Dr. Laura Portnoi

Still open space in project and capstone courses

———- Forwarded message ———-

Subject: Re: Low enrollment undergrad courses
To: Crystal Eney <ceney@cs.washington.edu>

A lot of you are tying to get into a number of our courses this quarter where space is tight.    We will try to help.   At the same time, however, many of you are missing out on very important project and capstone courses that are some of the truly unique opportunities offered by this department, not duplicated anywhere else.  Though they may not be required of you if you are a CS major, they are just as valuable for Computer Science majors as for Computer Engineering majors.

  • These are the kinds of interdisciplinary and team-oriented experiences that employers are looking for.
  • They are chances to work on cutting edge topics that go well beyond “textbook” content.
  • They are fun!

Courses this quarter include: 428, 441, 477, and both offerings of 481.

Especially in times of tight budgets, our ability to offer these courses in the future depends on continued student interest.

For more information see: http://www.cs.washington.edu/education/ugrad/academics/capstones_philosophy.pdf

Intentional Software creates and combines simple yet powerful domain specific languages that empower business and technical experts to express their knowledge and participate directly in the software creation process. Research credit for synthetic biology project

We are seeking outstanding and enthusiastic students to join our synthetic and systems biology team in the department of bioengineering. The research will involve developing and researching the next generation of interactive software tools in the field of systems and synthetic biology. The work will involve rebooting our simulation and analysis capabilities with particular emphasis on visualization, novel user interfaces, model reproducibility, versioning, tracking and model component repositories. Desktop tools will also be integrated with the web to enable collaborative modeling.

Prior experience of software development with Java, Javascript, OR other programming languages such as C/C++, C#,  Matlab, Python and Delphi is a must. Web development experience is a plus. A willingness to adapt and be self-motivated is essential. Familiarity with current standards and modeling efforts in systems and synthetic biology, such as SBML, SBOL and SED-ML is desirable but not essential at this stage.

Research credit is available now, with the possibility of funding in the future.

Registration information updates, including 333 info and other space added

Hey everyone,

A few reminders/updates from advising.

1. Even if a class is full and you see that there are no more spaces, please still try to add the course as it allows us to see unmet demand for courses. It won’t put you on a waiting list, but it will help us see where we may need to expand courses.

2. If you are not graduating this spring/summer and plan to take a 400 level course that requires 333 this fall, please fill out the catalyst survey.

3. We should be opening a few more spaces in CSE 352, 403 and  431 in the next week or so.   Those spaces will be filled by whoever gets there first.

4. For students who have finished most of their 300’s there are also a few capstones this spring that still have space.

Thank you,

CSE Advising
