Capstone update and Updated Teaching Schedule – 446 removed from winter, 454 and 461 added to winter

Hey folks,

There have been a few changes to the 2012-2013.

*446 was removed from winter, but will still be offered in the spring

*454 Advanced Internet Systems was added to winter (capstone survey will be re-opened if you want to change your selections)

*there will be another offering of networks added in the winter, so it will now be taught all three main quarters next year

For anyone who filled out the capstone survey and would like to change your answers to make 454, Advanced Internet Systems one of your options, the catalyst survey has been re-opened.

Please note, most students currently were set to get their first choice capstone except for the fall “Kinect” capstone, that one was over-subscribed by about 7 students. Once students have about a week to go in and change preferences with the addition of 454, I’ll send out the capstone assignments via email.

HUB Neighbors,

More fire alarm testing will take place later this week. We have procured additional decibel meters to speed up our measurements and cut the time the horns need to be activated.

Attached is the promised map of the revised pedestrian access route near the HUB, to allow us to complete the site work on the project. Access will be around the south end of Sieg Hall, and through the passageway between Kirsten and Guggenheim. This route will be in place at least until 8/10/12.

HUB Neighbors,

Fire Alarm testing at the HUB is officially underway. Intermittently for the next several weeks until the end of July, you will hear the alarm and see the strobes blinking. This is a sign that the finish line is approaching.

My Patient Neighbors,

The HUB Project is on the final stretch of the schedule. In order to finish up the site work in the lawn area between Sieg Hall, Allen Library and the HUB, we will have to close the wooden bridge at the north side of Sieg Hall between July 9th and August 10th.  During that time we will reroute pedestrian traffic around Sieg Hall to the south. I will send out a site map showing the revised pedestrian routing in the near future.

I wanted to send out this note to prepare you.

Bob Dillon

ugrad labs: new paint and new carpet

Tracy Erbeck
Jun 27 (2 days ago)
to cs-staff, faculty, cs-ugrads, cs-grads, John, Yang-Sook

We are still on schedule for the paint and carpet on the lower level.  The hallway off the elevators is complete, and paint/carpet in CSE 022 is complete.  By the end of this week, we should have that lab up and running again.

The study rooms are set to complete on 7/3, but we’re slightly ahead of schedule, so maybe by end of day 7/2.

The main hallway from the restrooms to the end of the labs is scheduled for painting staring this Friday, and completing by next Tuesday (7/3).  Please be cautious during this time frame!

CSE 002 carpet and paint will begin on 7/5 and complete around 7/16 (again, we’re ahead of schedule).  The lab should be ready to roll sometime on the 17th.

Then we’ll take a break for a while until September, when we’ll finish up with CSE 006 and rehanging all artwork and the award plaques.

Please contact me should you have questions or concerns.

Seattle Women’s Startup Weekend

Announcing (the first ever…)

Seattle Women’s Startup Weekend

July 13 – 15, 2012

http://seattlewomen.startupweekend.org

Location:

Saturday and Sunday hosted at:

Madrona Venture Group

1000 Second Avenue, Suite 3700

Seattle, WA  98104

Friday evening & Sunday evening presentations hosted at:

Perkins Coie

1201 Third Avenue, Suite 4900

Seattle, WA  98101

Ready to be part of something big?  Join us: we’re assembling 90 of the most talented entrepreneurial-minded women (and men) for a very special edition of Startup Weekend on July 13-15.

We provide the working space, brain fuel, food, mentors, new friends, and inspiring speakers and judges. You supply the energy and innovation to build something big over the weekend.

Bring an idea, a talented friend or potential co-founder, or just yourself! Startup Weekend hosts a series of events in cities around the world and offers a way to test ideas for new startups, contribute to those ideas, and even meet potential co-founders. Ideas are shared on Friday evening and the event culminates in final presentations to an all-star panel of judges on Sunday evening. This particular Startup Weekend will have a unique spin: a focus on connecting and showcasing the talents of women entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs.  Men who wish to attend Women’s Startup Weekend can do so… if they find a female participant to bring them along!

We only have 90 spots available and we expect the event to sell out fast.

Get ready to build something exciting.  See you July 13!

FAQ’s

Why a women-focused Startup Weekend?

The entrepreneurial talent we see from women in Seattle is inspiring, and we are excited about creating an event that will showcase it.  A big goal for the event is also to provide the opportunity for the aspiring women entrepreneurs in our community to (1) get inspired by an idea/product/team… perhaps even enough to explore starting their own venture, or (2) become more connected with other brilliant entrepreneurially-minded individuals in Seattle and thus more engaged within our local entrepreneurial ecosystem.  The original initiative behind this event came from the team at Madrona Venture Group, and they along with Perkins Coie and Square 1 Bank will be sponsoring and hosting the weekend.

Are men allowed to attend Women’s Startup Weekend?

Yes… but there’s a catch!  If you are a man who wishes to attend Women’s Startup Weekend, you can if and only if you find a woman participant to bring you along.  Since Seattle Women’s Startup Weekend is about connecting entrepreneurial women through the process of building exciting companies, we want to connect them to the best resources and people out there – that includes both men and women.

That said, to ensure that we maintain a high percentage of female participants, the number of tickets we issue to men will be limited (there will be a wait list).  If you’re a man who wants to attend, find a female participant to bring you along, and do so quickly! (Note: Each female participant can only bring one male participant.)

Will the participants be required to pitch or work on “women-focused” startup ideas?

No, participants can pitch and work on any kind of startup idea they wish.

Capstone pre-registration now open and teachers listed on teaching schedule

Finally, sorry this is so late, but the capstone pre-assignment survey is now open. It’s about half-way down the capstone page under Capstone Registration.

We have also updated the 2012-2013 Teaching Schedule to include instructor names.

Please note: We had to re move a couple of capstones that had been on the original teaching schedule. At this point, this is what we have to offer. Most will require at least 332 and preferably you should be done with your 300’s and have a 400 or two under your belt as well.   Other prereqs are listed below.  If we add more capstones, you’ll be able to change your preferences.

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is holding its A.M.
Turing Centenary Celebration in San Francisco, CA, today and Saturday
— marking the 100th anniversary of Alan Turing’s birth by bringing
together 33 living Turing Award winners for the first time, and

science. The event, which kicks off at 12pm EDT this afternoon, will
be streamed live via the web. Over 1,000 in-person attendees are

As Vint Cerf, the General Chair for the celebration and himself the
