STAT 391

Just a reminder that STAT 391 has been re-vamped a bit to match our new curriculum better. You would ideally have CSE 312 completed before taking 391.  Additionally, note that Stat 391 can be applied to a math minor, but you have to email the math advisors to have the exception put into the UW system. There are still a couple of spaces left in stat and it also counts as a CSE core course and CSE Senior elective.

survey from HCDE graduate student

Hello,

I am asking you to please take about 20 minutes out of your day to participate in a survey about confusion matrix visualization for a study myself and some fellow HCDE students are working on. I strongly encourage you to participate regardless of your experience with this subject! We are hoping to publish our results at the 2013 Vis Conference.
The survey can be found at:  http://kona.ischool.uw.edu/confusion/
I would also ask that you please forward this message to anyone that you think would be willing to participate in this survey as we are hoping to have as many participants as possible to make our study a success! As some of you may know, we rean a small pilot study last year with some very promising results, and thank you again to all of those who participated!
Thank you for your time.

Business Plan Competition

———- Forwarded message ———-

Now in its 16th year, the Business Plan Competition is designed to bring interdisciplinary teams of students together to promote student start-up ideas and venture creation. Any degree-seeking college or university student in the state of Washington can submit his/her 5- to 7-page executive summary to the Competition.

To date, one hundred and five student teams have received seed funding of $1,332,000, many of which are still going strong, including: Contour, Epic Seats, Krochet Kids, Stockbox Grocers, NanoString Technologies, Cadence Biomedical, Brass Media, and Impel Neuropharma, just to name a few.

The competition takes place in April and May, and the deadline to enter is Monday, April 8 by 11:59 pm.

Top Reasons to Enter the 2013 UW Business Plan Competition!

·        Make serious headway on that great idea you’ve been tossing around for months (or years!).  In seven weeks you’ll refine everything from your executive summary and quick pitch to your full business plan and investor pitch.

·        Gain visibility from the community—nearly 400 members of the Seattle entrepreneurial and investment community are involved in judging and coaching our competition.

·        Build your network.  Think about who can help you move forward. The judges are all from the wider Northwest entrepreneurial ecosystem.

·        Get feedback.  All submissions to the competition will be read by 8 to 10 judges, and every team will receive feedback, which will be aggregated and returned via email.

·        Receive skilled coaching and mentoring from judges to prepare you for the competition (and beyond).

·        Win money to jump-start your company!  The Grand Prize is $25,000, and a total of $60,000 will be awarded to student teams in the competition.

·        Apply for additional funding and coaching after the competition through the Jones Milestone/Foster Accelerator program. Teams will also receive expert coaching and mentorship as part of the program. Students graduating in June 2013 are encouraged to apply for this program.

Business Plan Competition Next Steps

1.       Intent to Submit

BPC Early Registration Deadline: If you’re thinking of entering the UW Business Plan Competition, please complete the online Intent to Submit form by Monday, March 18.  This will ensure that you receive all the up-to-date information about the 2013 BPC! Completing this form tells us important information about your team and idea, and helps us better plan for the event. (Please note: the Intent to Submit is just basic information, not your executive summary.)  While it is optional to complete the form before March 18, you must submit it no later than April 8 in order to enter the competition.  Access the form directly here: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/asallin/189061

2.       Deadline to Enter

Your 5–7 page executive summary is due on Monday, April 8, at 11:59 p.m.  Be sure to review the submission checklist (includes judging criteria) and example executive summaries. Details to submit your 5- to 7-page executive summary will be posted soon!

Computing Volunteers for Saturday Computing Experience

Richard Ladner
9:42 AM (5 hours ago)
to cs-grads, cs-ugrads

Dear Potential Saturday Computing Volunteers,

The Saturday Computing Experience is an 8 week workshop for deaf and
hard of hearing high school students.  It starts on April 6th and ends
on June 1st, skipping the Memorial Day weekend.  It runs from 9:30 to
noon except on the final day when students showcase their projects to
their family and friends.  There is an orientation the evening of
April 3rd, Wednesday, from 6 to 7:30.

http://adhhc.cs.washington.edu/SCE.php

This year we will be doing Processing, modeled after the DawgBytes
camps that were done here last summer. We may be able to link up
Processing with Android phones too.

http://processing.org/

We are looking for a few volunteers to help with one-on-one mentoring
with the students.  It is not necessary to know sign language,
although it would be helpful.  We will have interpreters in the room
to assist with communication. To volunteer please sign up at the
following catalyst site.

https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/ladner/194638

If you are interested please sign up by the end of the day, Tuesday, March 19th.

Thanks,

Richard Ladner

HCI project fair invitation

Please RSVP to nikki+HCIFair@nicoleblee.com

You’re Invited to the HCI Project Fair!

CSE 440 Student Presentations Thursday, March 21st 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Each year, students in UW CSE’s introductory Human-Computer Interaction course (CSE 440) organize into teams and spend a quarter iteratively designing, prototyping, and evaluating a user interface.

Come join us on Thursday, March 21st, from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM to see what the nine student teams created this quarter (feel free to come at 11:45 AM for the poster session). Lunch is on us. It is a great chance to meet top graduating students in computer science, design, informatics, HCDE, architecture, & digital arts who have an interest in user interfaces. This select group of students includes the designers, programmers, and evaluation specialists of the future.

The students had an especially challenging design charge this quarter. They were asked to create a mobile computing application that addressed one of the following design briefs: change (transform your or your family’s behavior), crowd sourced mobile AI (e.g., use Mechanical Turk to give perfect vision, speech reco, etc.), creativity (help people be more creative in their everyday lives). The resulting projects have interesting mobile interfaces and usage models.

The HCI Project Fair will take place on the UW campus, Mary Gates Hall room 241. Details on the project fair activities, this quarter’s projects, and how to get there follow.

Activities

We will start the morning by my giving a 20 minute overview of what was taught in the HCI course this quarter and how the student projects were structured. Next, the top three teams (as voted by the students) will give 15 minute presentations showing you the design and evolution of their interfaces.

Following the end of the formal presentations at 11:45, we will have food, drinks, and a demo/poster session to give you a chance to meet the students and see their projects up close.

This is your opportunity to find out more about the current state of the art of human-computer interaction education, to learn its role in a university curriculum, and to see some novel ideas presented by some of the top graduating seniors in the country.

Projects

The nine innovative group projects look at applications and services on mobile platforms.
