College of Engineering Scholarship Applications – Open April 1 to May 1

The College of Engineering scholarship application for the 2013-2014 academic year will open on Monday April 1. The application will close on May 1 at 5pm.

http://www.engr.washington.edu/curr_students/scholarships.html

CSE takes scholarship applications twice per year. You should apply during this application period if:

  • You are a Computer Engineering major. CSE only has two awards to give out this application cycle, given to us by the College of Engineering with the requirement that only CE students are eligible to receive them.
  • You wish to be considered for College of Engineering awards: http://www.engr.washington.edu/curr_students/studentprogs/emergingleaders.html (CE and CS majors eligible, be sure to select “College of Engineering” when applying).

The bulk of the 2013-2014 CSE scholarships are awarded during the summer application period (Aug 1-Aug 20). So if you don’t receive an award this round, don’t worry. You have a second chance!

Emerging Leaders in Engineering Scholarships

Additionally, the College of Engineering’s Emerging Leaders Scholarships have a separate application process (please note this is different from last year). Emerging Leaders in Engineering Scholarships are awarded to students who are selected to participate in the Emerging Leaders in Engineering Program. The Program is designed to help undergraduate engineering students develop their leadership abilities through practical experience and personal reflection.

The application for the Emerging Leaders Scholarships will also open on April 1. Both CE and CS majors are eligible! You can find more info here: http://engr.washington.edu/curr_students/studentprogs/emergingleaders.html

Spring directed research in HCDE

Course Opportunity this Spring—HCDE 496/596 (Directed Research: Remotely Assessing the User Experience)

We are looking for CSE and iSchool students to help us develop an open source software toolkit (WebLabUX) that allows web designers to remotely assess the effectiveness of different website designs by measuring users’ behaviors, perceptions, and comprehension when they interact with information online. You can earn course credit while helping us develop our toolkit.

Spring 2013 activities that would be of interest to CSE and iSchool students include:

  • PHP/MySQL coding of backend data collection infrastructure
  • User interface coding (HTML/CSS, JavaScript/JQuery, Drupal theming)
  • Quality assurance testing

Individual students will drive the development and testing of a feature or set of features of the software, under supervision of a senior graduate student and faculty member.

Students can participate in this research group by enrolling for 2-5 credits (graded cr/no cr) in HCDE 496 (for undergraduate students) or HCDE 596 (for graduate students). Students are expected to spend, on average, three hours of effort per credit per week. We will meet weekly on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:00. Interested students should send a short email to Professor Jan Spyridakis (jansp@uw.edu) explaining their interest in the group and suggesting what software development strengths they could contribute to the group.

Thank you,

Jan

Summer 2013 course offerings – update

I finally have word on what we will offer this summer. We will definitely offer:

CSE 142, 143, 154 (web programming), 333 (systems programming)  and 351 (hardware/software interface) and 390A the one credit course that goes with 351.
Additionally, there will be two animation courses, CSE 456 and 464 (one A term and the other B term) and we *might* offer CSE 421, that is still pending. I should know by a week from today (by the start of spring quarter) if we’ll offer 421 this summer.

If you don’t see the course name/number above, then we are not offering it this summer. If you see it on the time schedule and not on this list, again, then it will not be offered.

Health Informatics program at UT at Arlington

We would like to ask for your help in making students aware of an opportunity for a fully supported Ph.D. study in Health Informatics in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at The University of Texas at Arlington. For this opportunity we have Department of Education backed funding (through a Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need grant) to support U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident students for their Ph.D. studies. This opportunity is open to both M.S. and B.S. graduates, the latter through our expedited B.S. to Ph.D. program. The theme of our GAANN program is health informatics, an area in which our Department has many excellent researchers, focusing on such high tech research as bioinformatics, medical imaging, medical robotics, smart environments, smart health devices, etc.

We are lenient with our Ph.D. application deadlines and would love to talk to your qualifying students.

We appreciate your help. Please feel free to contact me with any question or any suggestions; I would love to hear from you or your academic advisors.

Best wishes,

Dr. Gergely Záruba
