Construction at Burke Gilman and Rainier Vista

Many of you have noticed the fencing and the construction trailers near the BG at Rainier Vista.  Below is a description of the project-  UW is lucky to have a brilliant construction manager at the helm, Bob Dillon, who just happened to be the construction manager for the Paul G Allen Center for CSE.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Montlake Triangle Project (MTP) is a multi-agency effort consisting of three

subprojects centered around the intersection of Pacific Street and Montlake Boulevard.

The project scope includes lowering NE Pacific Place and constructing a land bridge that

will connect the Montlake Triangle and the lower Rainier Vista with a seamless pedestrian

experience. Transit patrons will access the triangle via a combination of existing

crosswalks and a new bridge across Montlake Boulevard. The MTP subprojects will be

constructed sequentially and scheduled to minimize impact to adjacent work projects.

These subprojects consist of the following elements:

• Montlake Pedestrian Bridge–Subproject 1 (SP1) – This project will provide pedestrian

and bicycle connections between the future light rail station at Husky Stadium and the

Montlake Triangle. Sound Transit is managing design and construction of this $11.4

million project.

• Rainier Vista Land Bridge–Subproject 2 (SP2) – This bridge will span Pacific Place

and connect the Montlake Triangle to Rainier Vista. The UW is managing design and

construction of this $20.8 million project.

• Rainier Vista Land Bridge Site Improvements–Subproject 3 (SP3) – This project will

provide landscaping, hard surfacing, lighting, and other site improvements from

Stevens Way through the Montlake Triangle. The UW is managing design and

construction of this $4.5 million project.

Tableau Tech Talk: Help People See and Understand Their Data

1/21; 6pm-7pm; EEB125

Come learn how Tableau Software is changing the big data industry by democratizing data. Similar to how desktop publishing or the spreadsheet put powerful tools into the hands of the people who needed to use them, Tableau gives people the ability to visualize and analyze their own data. Learn how doctors, scientists, programmers, and even gamers are empowered to discover their data at the speed of thought. We are on a mission to fundamentally change the way people interact with their data. Come and see.

Tableau Software is one of the fastest growing technology companies in the world. Tableau makes fast analytics and visualization products that help people see and understand data of any size or format.

Interested in Study Abroad? Interested in water and the environment in an International context? The CEE department is offering the study abroad course, “CEE 497 / CEE 598: ENGINEERING JORDAN, WATER IN AN ARID LAND” in late August/Early September.

Students learn about the cycle of water engineering from water resource to wastewater reuse in the backdrop of one of the most water-poor nations in the world, The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Students in the course live and study side-by-side with students from the Jordan University of Science and Engineering. This will be the third year in which this class has been offered and it has been getting rave reviews from past students. Space is limited.  Applications to enroll must be submitted by March 1.

This is a unique opportunity and is one of only a few engineering study abroad opportunities sponsored by the College of Engineering.

AdMob Challenge

I wanted to loop UW students in on something called the AdMob Challenge. There was a recent announcement made via a Google Students post about this which you can read about in more detail via the link, but basically AdMob is the name of a Google platform that helps app developers monetize their apps. The AdMob team is trying to build tech student awareness (especially to those who are already creating their own apps) by creating this challenge.

Students form teams of 1-5 and create an App. They have until March 31st to submit their apps. Winning teams get prizes, and the grand prize is a trip to Mountain View, CA.

This challenge could be particularly good for students who already have an internship with another company this summer but are still interested in Google. I’ve attached a one-sheeter about the challenge and you can feel free to copy and share the G+ post as you wish.

It would be great if you could let your students know about this challenge. You can direct students to the official site, where they can register and get all the info.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Cheers,

Marion
