We need YOU to help inspire the next generation of computer scientists!

Join the spring K-12 Computing Education seminar to:

and share our experiences volunteering with K-12 students.  We will
also complete projects in small teams.

Previous quarters’ projects included designing and implementing a
computer science activity fair for middle school girls and starting a
programming club at a local high school.  See fall’s course page at

Volunteer with TEDxUofW

My name is Arash Namvar and I am one of the three co-curators for the
University of Washington’s TEDx conference; TEDxUofW. If you are unfamiliar
with TEDx: TEDx are independently organized events-where communities and
individuals have the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like
experiences. We hope to bring our own TEDx experience with the “Elements of
Transition”; this year’s theme for TEDxUofW set to take place on April 20th
2013. We are excited to open a forum to the University of Washington
students and community about discovering identities, proactive communities,
and how they shape the world.

TEDxUofW is a TEDx licensee and an independently organized community event.
We are looking for volunteers for our event. Right now, we are looking for
long-term volunteers in Registration Manager, Sponsorship Manager,
Volunteer Manager, Event Day Managers, Speaker Selection Manager, Web
Developer, Social Media Manager, Production Manager, Graphic Design
Manager, Photographer, and Production Technician.

We at TEDxUofW are reaching out to a select group of organizations that are
committed to the power of ideas to support our TEDx event. We felt the
Association for Computing Machinery would contribute to creating a memorable and unique
TEDxUofW atmosphere.

Feel free to reach me directly at tedxuofw@uw.edu if you have any questions
or would like to get more involved in TEDxUofW.

Warmly,

Arash Namvar

Seeking SIGCSE 2013 student volunteers

Thought this was worth passing along….

SIGCSE is still looking for student volunteers for this year’s conference.  This would be a good time to sign up if you’re interested and haven’t done so yet.

To: SIGCSE-announce@listserv.acm.org

Back in late December, I sent the note below announcing the availability of student volunteer registration.  With the new, automated system, we hope to assign student work schedules by early to mid-February (earlier than many years).  Students who have not enrolled by that time will have many fewer options for working (if spaces are still left).  We have had a moderately steady stream of student volunteer registrations.  However, we can use more and encourage you to volunteer or encourage your students to do so.  The students love the experience and it will help make SIGCSE 2013 a great success.
Many thanks,
Steve Huss-Lederman and Steve Wolfman

We are pleased to announce that student volunteers can now register for SIGCSE 2013.  Please see https://www.cs.ubc.ca/~sig-cse/sigcse/.   Being a student volunteer will be the same as previous years but this year we are introducing a web-based system for registration that will allow students to view their information (including schedules once they are done in February).

In case you are new to recommending or being a student volunteer, here are some of the advantages:
– You get to meet and work with other students who are interested in CS
– You get a full refund of the conference fee so you can attend for free.
– You get to come to the student thank you dinner where we raffle off prizes.
– You get a free t-shirt.
– You get our undying love for helping make the conference a success.
Details on being a student volunteer are available at the above site.  If you have any question, please feel free to contact us at sigcse13-volunteers@cs.rit.edu.
All the best,
Steve Huss-Lederman and Steve Wolfman

Sure Mausam.  You could use the following blurb.  Let me know if you need more information.

A group of students from a Seattle STEM Public High School, will be participating in the First Robotics Competition, FRC (http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc), which is one of the nations’s most prestigious competitions.  The competition is fast paced – was announced yesterday & the students have 6-7 weeks to complete a working model of a robot that can throw Frisbees and climb a tower.

With the goal of providing all the support from the local community, we are looking for 2 or 3 young Comp Sc graduates/employees, to create a team of mentors to help the students in the area of software development.  A group of engineers from Boeing will help on the mechanical engineering side of the project.  Most high schools have parent volunteers who help with this, which is unfortunately not the case here.

The group is scheduled to meet 2 hours (3pm-5pm) Tues/Wed/Thurs during Jan and Feb.

This will be a great way of making a difference in the local community.  Please consider this opportunity and if you are interested contact Usha Rao at ushatrao@yahoo.com or 425-830-4830.

Thanks,

Usha

DawgBytes volunteers needed!

Hello,

TL;DR — fill out https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/helenem/179736 to volunteer with K-12 students!

Our K-12 outreach program, DawgBytes, reached over 120 teachers and 1,000 students during last academic year. We offered classroom presentations, summer camps, programming competitions, teacher workshops and more. All of this was possible thanks to the involvement of over 40 undergraduate and graduate students — check it out: http://cs.washington.edu/dawgbytes

This year, we’d like to do even more and we need your help! We’re involved in outreach because as many of you know all too well, computer science is a subject that many students discover late and don’t understand well. This affects the diversity of our field as a whole and results in disappointed college seniors who discover they love CS but feel like they can’t switch majors so late in the game. We want to address this by making sure as many K-12 students as possible understand what CS is and know a bit about our department. In the next couple of months, we have several classroom visits, a programming competition and a computer science open house planned. Will you help us make them happen?

Please fill out this quick survey if you might be interested in volunteering at any time during the year:

https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/helenem/179736.

I look forward to working with many of you soon!

Best,

Hélène Martin
