Volunteer to tutor 300-level CSE courses this summer!

Happy summer!

Are you on the UW campus over summer? Are you interested in getting tutoring experience on your resume? If so, the Allen School is looking for volunteer tutors for the 300-level CSE courses offered over the summer. The courses offered are:

  • CSE 331: Software Design and Implementation
  • CSE 332: Data Structures and Parallels
  • CSE 333: Systems Programming
  • CSE 344: Intro to Data Management

WHY TUTOR?

Tutoring is a great way to work on your communication skills, support your fellow undergrads, and get experience on your resume. Additionally, it is a low commitment way to determine if a teaching assistant position in the future is a good fit for you or to keep up with your current tutoring skills.  This is a volunteer position but tutors who meet with their group every week during the quarter will get CSE swag!

TUTORING DETAILS

Tutoring will be offered July 3rd – August 18th. Tutors meet once/week working with a group of 1-4 undergrads, covering CS concepts from a course of your choice. No prior tutoring experience necessary (this is an opportunity for students in the course to get extra help in addition to resources offered by the instructor and teaching assistants).

The commitment is one hour/week for one quarter = a total commitment of 7ish hours total.

REQUIREMENTS

Your knowledge of the material (you must have completed and passed the course) and your willingness to help!

To volunteer, please review these guidelines and sign up online by Thursday, June 29th:
https://www.cs.washington.edu/students/ugrad/tutoring/tutor

Questions? E-mail Chloe (cdolese@cs.washington.edu). Thanks for considering!

Tutor Math and Science with the Pipeline Project

Tutor at an elementary, middle or high school in Seattle during Summer or Fall Quarter with the UW Pipeline Project!

The UW Pipeline Project recruits, trains and places UW students as volunteer tutors in Seattle schools and community organizations. We are recruiting tutors for Summer and Fall quarter to volunteer with about 40 different schools, and would love to have you!

Volunteer during Summer or Fall Quarter:

We’ll help you get set up tutoring in a K-12 classroom or community organization. Tutors make a minimum commitment of 2-3 hours per week for at least one quarter.

The schedule is flexible: schools need tutors Mon-Fri between 7:30 and 5pm. And we offer transportation to some of our partner schools that have the highest need for tutors. More information can be found here: http://expd.uw.edu/pipeline/volunteer/

Take an EDUC 401 Inner Pipeline Seminar Class for Credit:

Participate in a weekly Pipeline seminar and tutor for at least 2.5 hours a week at a Seattle school or community organization! All of our courses are Credit/No Credit, are I & S credits, and are listed under EDUC 401. The number of credits a student receives depends on the number of tutoring hours completed in addition to seminar attendance. 2 credits: weekly seminar and tutor 2-3 hours per week. Seminars are a fantastic opportunity to learn about issues in public education and tutoring strategies, while reflecting and learning from your tutoring site.

Take a look at our upcoming Summer and Fall seminars here: http://expd.uw.edu/pipeline/inner-pipeline-seminars/

Fall 2017 Inner Pipeline Seminar Spotlights:

Tutoring Math and Science in K-12 Education

EDUC 401C

Tuesdays 4:30-5:50pm

In this seminar, students explore the world of math and science in K-12 schools by attending seminars that focus on current educational topics and tutoring at one of Pipeline’s partner schools. A key feature of the course is the opportunity to reflect on and share tutoring experiences in order to gain advice, suggestions, and pointers. Several seminars are devoted to best practices for science and math tutoring. The seminar also includes brief readings and discussion of critical topics in K-12 science and math education. Through the lens of social justice, this course will include conversation and critique of the social, political and economic factors that affect STEM education.

If you have any questions about how to get involved with Pipeline Project feel free to email us at pipeline@uw.edu or visit us anytime M-F 9am-5pm in Mary Gates Hall Suite 171.

Earn Winter quarter credit for tutoring!

Attention, Juniors & Seniors! Be a Tutor-Mentor: EDUC 401 F G

UW’s Academic Support Programs is offering a service-learning seminar titled “EDUC 401: Higher Education Tutoring and Mentorship” in Winter Quarter 2017. This weekly seminar introduces juniors and seniors to tutoring, mentoring, and teaching methodologies. Students apply what they learn in class through tutoring and mentoring new transfer, freshman, and sophomore students who are transitioning socially, culturally, and academically to the UW. This is a great opportunity for seasoned students to give back to the UW by sharing their knowledge and experience. We have a special need for students with knowledge of CSE.

  • Seminar meets on Mondays from 3:30-4:50 PM or from 6:00-7:20 PM
  • Tutoring takes place on campus
  • Receive 2 credits for working with one student, or 3 credits for working with two students
  • A letter of recommendation will be available upon request after completion of the seminar

Volunteer to help with CS Education week this Saturday!

Hello, CSE students! CSE is getting ready for our K-12 Open House, on Saturday 12/3 from 1-5pm. Hundreds of middle and high school students will visit the CSE building to learn about CS and related fields.  We need your help as volunteers to host all of these young students.

If you can volunteer for part of Saturday afternoon, sign up here. You do not need to attend the full event. After signing up, we’ll email you to get your availability.

More details on CS Education Week:

12/9 is Grace Hopper’s birthday and 12/5 is the beginning of the nationally-recognized Computer Science Education Week.  In celebration of these events, we’ll host our fourth Computing Open House on Saturday, December 3rd from 1-5pm.  Middle and high school students from around the Puget Sound will visit us to see computer science in action.  Last year’s event drew over 500 participants!

We will have several stations in the Atrium that students can visit to explore computer science, including research demos and fun CS activities.
Thank you,
CSE Outreach team

We need mentors for new CSE Majors! Welcome night is Wed. Sept. 28th 430pm

Welcome back folks, it’s almost time to kick off the new year!

To do that effectively, we need veteran CSE majors (you have completed at least one quarter in the major) to mentor our new students, and we have a LOT of new majors.  Just over 300 to put things in perspective.  Ideally we’d have at least 75 mentors.  Even with 75, that means everyone will have a small group of mentees, 4-5 each.

Welcome night will be Wednesday, Sept. 28th from 430-630 approximately.  If you can help us out, please fill out the catalyst survey to volunteer.

There will be burritos for those who participate, but the REAL reason to volunteer, is to help all of our new majors learn how welcoming and inclusive this community of undergraduates are here in UW CSE.

Volunteer Summer Project

Three students from the department of public health are designing a website and app recommendation for homeless youth in the Seattle area. The website and app will be called HealthHelp for the Homeless and will feature GPS mapping of relevant health resources as well as the bus routes to these locations.
We are looking to build a team of computer science, informatics, and geography students to work on this independent project. You should be prepared to coordinate with these other students, but most work will be individual. There is room for lots of creative flexibility! This is a completely voluntary project so you will not get paid.
Project work will take place from mid-June to August.
Interested students should contact Vilia Wang at: veeveew@gmail.com
