Need help with outreach to high school and middle school!

Sign up on this list if you’ve willing to hear about occasional outreach activities that need an extra volunteer or two.

CSE Ambassadors: https://mailman.cs.washington.edu/mailman/listinfo/ambassadors

**Our first request is for two students to help with an event this Friday, April 8th, from 1:15 – 2PM for a group of 35 middle school students.

More information:

You may have read about a seminar this quarter working on outreach to local middle and high school students. In addition to that seminar, we’ve created a mailing list for any student to join who would be up for helping us out occasionally. We often need just one or two more students to help with an event, and this would be a list of people who are ready to volunteer to meet with prospective students, or help work with a visiting group.

If you could spare an hour here and there to help, we’d love you to sign up. Here is the link to the CSE Ambassadors list:

Week (so late in the quarter I have lost track): Winterfest and Tech Talks

Hi all,

Also, if anyone would like to volunteer to set up, take down, or run a table for fall fest send the acm officers a message and we’ll get back to you (their email is acm-officers at cs…)  We’ll contact you closer to the event with more details.

There are many opportunities for Google engineers to make immediate impact and work on real problems. Our engineers are also encouraged to make contributions to the computer science community through a variety of professional development activities, such as attending conferences, publishing papers, open source, and more. Come and hear local engineers Charlie Reis and Atul Adya briefly talk about how they have done this at Google. See details below. When: Wednesday, February 9, from 6-8 PM Where: 105 Sign up for this event by RSVP’ing here. (RSVPing helps us know how many people to order food for, but everyone is welcome!) Charlie will share his experience with research opportunities at Google, specifically on the Chrome team. He’ll talk about chances to write papers and serve on program committees, as well as how research at Google can differ from other labs, such as shipping experimental projects to millions of users. Charlie Reis is a Software Engineer on the Google Chrome team. He finished his PhD at UW CSE in 2009, working with Steve Gribble and Hank Levy. His research interests focus on improving the reliability and security of web browsers for running modern web applications. Atul will share his perspective on systems research at Google and it with his experience in other labs/product groups. In particular, he will discuss how research and publications in infrastructure systems happens at Google. He will also share his opinion on the Google culture and why Google continues to be exciting place for graduate students. Atul Adya is a Software Engineer at Google leading a team building a large-scale notifications system. Prior to Google, Atul worked at Microsoft Research (on a distributed file system called Farsite) and in Microsoft product groups (Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Live Mesh) in the areas of distributed systems, databases, file systems, object-relational systems and wireless systems. Earlier at the MIT Computer Science Laboratory, he worked on the Thor persistent object store in the areas of weak consistency, transactions, and object caching. Atul received his B. Tech. degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and his S.M. and PhD degrees with Prof. Barbara Liskov from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research interests span a broad range of systems including distributed systems, storage systems, databases, operating systems, and wireless systems. The UW Engineers Without Borders One Laptop Per Child project is looking for new members!

Here is a great opportunity to get some real-world experience, and do something good for the greater community.

_______________

The UW Engineers Without Borders One Laptop Per Child project is looking for new members!

The One Laptop Per Child organization’s mission is to create educational opportunities for the world’s poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low cost, low power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, enjoyable, self-empowered learning.

The UW Chapter of Engineers Without Borders is working towards this goal by developing software for the One Laptop Per Child organization’s XO laptop ( http://one.laptop.org/ ) and Sugar Operating System ( http://www.sugarlabs.org/ ). We are looking for anyone who knows or wants to learn Python and is interested in getting hand on experience in a project with real impact. Only minimal programming experience is required and the work is largely open ended.

If you are interested or have any questions, please email us at: uw.onelaptop@gmail.com

We meet on Fridays from 4pm-5pm in the Foster Business Library. You can check our wiki for the room number here: http://www.ewb-uwashington.org/wiki/index.php?title=One_Laptop_Per_Child

Outreach seminar open for registration and Sunday last day to drop courses w/o using annual drop

If you were interested in the seminar mentioned below, it’s now open for registration. Remember that Sunday is the last day to drop a course without using your annual drop.  Students registering for the seminar will have the $20 late fee waived.  Please make any changes to your schedule on the same day or you’ll be charged multiple fees, it’s $20/day you make changes.

Course name/number: CSE 490 O

SLN 20188

No add code required

Meets: Wed 330-420 in room 305 of the Allen Center

____________________________________________________

Course will begin January 19th.

As part of our recruiting and outreach efforts, we’re going to offer a 1-credit course this quarter in which students will develop a CSE “Roadshow.” This roadshow will be a fun, interactive presentation that students can later take to local middle schools and high schools, to get more young students excited about UW CSE.

In the 1-credit course this winter, undergraduate and graduate students explore how other universities reach out to middle and high schools, and then work in small groups to develop our own CSE roadshow. As a team, we’ll make sure these roadshows are fun and easy to present. They’ll use hands-on activities and examples of research to show how interesting, creative, and fun CSE can be.

We will offer the course again in the spring quarter and you will have an opportunity to “test drive” and tweak the presentations you create by visiting local high schools and presenting to their students.   During this spring offering of the course, we’ll provide training so students feel comfortable presenting this roadshow, in pairs, at local schools.  Although we hope many of the students from this winter course will continue in spring quarter, course participants are not required to give presentations in spring (however winter students will be given some priority for presentations). Similarly, if you are more interested in presenting to local high schools than creating the presentations, you may want to take the spring offering of the course as we will not require winter quarter participation for people who hope to present the roadshow.

No presentation or outreach experience required! We just need enthusiasm for CSE.

If you would like to join this 1-credit course this winter, please fill out this catalyst survey: https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/cseadv/121605

The class meeting time will be Wednesday 330-420PM starting Wed Jan. 19th. If you would like to participate, but don’t need the credit, just tell us that on the survey.
Additionally, if you can’t make this time but are interested in helping this quarter as we prepare the road show, please also fill out the catalyst. The course co-instructors will be Franzi Roesner and Crystal Eney with help from many others. Please email Franzi at franzi@cs.washington.edu if you have questions.

We will waive the $20 late-registration fee when we add you to this course.

Need help this Sat for a workshop with high school students

Sorry for the repeat message, I accidentally forwarded the first one that was meant for the EE dept. We need CSE students to help too.

The CSE department is hosting a workshop for high school students this
Saturday from 1-5PM in the EE Building room 105.  We could use some
more volunteers. We’re looking for people who are familiar with C++ or who have participated in First Robotics in the past, however just being ethusiastic is the most important prereq.

If  could volunteer some time to help out, please fill out this survey:
https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/cseadv/119440

Please contact Peter Brook pbrook@cs.washington.edu or Ashoat Tevosyan
ashoat@cs.washington.edu with questions.

Thank you in advance, we know this isn’t much notice.

Sincerely,
Crystal
