Volunteer Opportunity: Seattle Public Schools Family Tech Support Hotline!

Hello Allen School students!

The Seattle Public School District is in urgent need of volunteers to help their students access online learning. Please consider volunteering if you have the time!

More information below.

Take care,

Chloe

Remote learning during the COVID-19 school closures can be challenging for all students. Imagine not having access to a computer or internet at home and trying to keep up with school. SPS has been deploying district laptops, donated devices and hotspots to thousands of households in need. However, we know that many families need computer and web navigation coaching so their students can take advantage of online learning.

Will you volunteer from home to support the SPS Family Tech Support Helpline? Visit https://bit.ly/families_tech_help to sign up for a shift today!

Volunteer role:

  • Receive calls from SPS families seeking help with technology and remote learning resources.
  • Use a provided resource guide to assist parents and guardians of SPS students. We anticipate most challenges to be related to basic computer and internet set up, and/or accessing online learning tools (Schoology, Student Portal, the Source).
  • Enter more challenging issues into an online Support Request Log – they will be addressed by a specialized tech support team.
  • The helpline will also save voicemails from families – they will need to be entered into the Support Request Log as well.
  • Volunteers will be supported by a project coordinator who will connect you with online resources and answer questions.

What you will need: phone (your number will be not be shared with callers), internet connection, computer or another device that allows you to access a web browser.
Volunteer from the comfort and safety of your home AND enjoy connecting with fellow Seattleites!

  • Visit https://bit.ly/families_tech_help to pick one or more shifts.
  • Two-hour volunteer shifts are available every weekday 7:30 am – 7:30 pm to give as many volunteers the opportunity to help as possible and for families with different work schedules to be able to reach the helpline.
  • Not sure if this is the right volunteer match for you? Try one shift and pick more up later!

What type of skills are needed for this role?

  • Be comfortable with computers as a user. No advanced technology knowledge is needed. Knowledge of SPS resources like Schoology or the Source is a plus but not necessary.
  • Be a patient and clear communicator.
  • Be open to learning about the technology barriers faced by different communities.
  • If you are nervous about communicating via phone “live” but still want to help, let us know! In a week or so we will know which shifts are heavier on “transcribing voicemails”.

SPS Family Tech Support Helpline volunteers will help ensure all students continue learning during COVID-19 school closures. We hope you can join this exciting project!

[ACM] Big/Little Applications Close TODAY!

Just a friendly reminder that applications for the Big/Littles program close TONIGHT (March 13th) at 11:59PM. Please read the form carefully and answer the questions as best you can!

If you are new admits, please sign up to be a little! We have fantastic bigs who are excited to welcome you into the CSE community and answer questions you may have throughout the quarter. A spot as a little in this program is restricted to new admits in their first quarter so take advantage of this opportunity to meet more students in the CSE community. 🙂

Littles sign up here!

Remember, bigs must have been in CSE for at least two quarters AND have completed the CSE 311 class. This is just to ensure that our bigs are well prepared for questions that the new admits may have for them. If you don’t meet these requirements this quarter, we encourage you to sign up as bigs for fall quarter as we will be needing a large number of bigs to help mentor the fall quarter admits.

Bigs sign up here!

[ACM] Become a Big for the CSE Big/Little Program!

Hello everyone!

We are continuing our ACM Big Little Program and are looking for volunteers to act as mentors for our new Spring 2019 Admits!

Who can be a Big?

If you have been a Allen School student for at least 2 quarters (including Winter 2019) and have already taken CSE 311, you are eligible to be a Big. Specifically, we are looking for anyone excited to meet and guide new students in the CSE major. Depending on the number of participants, the number of Littles you have will vary but we had a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio of Bigs to Littles in the past!

If you were a Big previously, you are more than welcome to sign up again!

Why be a Big?

As our program begins to expand, the amount of students who are new to the Allen School (or in some cases, to UW) is increasing drastically. We want to ensure that our Allen School community continues to be a supportive environment despite the growth in student numbers. Being a Big is a great way to connect with new CSE students. We hope to match you with students that have similar backgrounds, interests or pathways to you to ease their transition into the Allen School.

Time Commitment

We expect Bigs and Littles to meet up on their own time to get coffee/boba, study, or eat dinner a couple of times throughout the quarter.

Additionally, ACM will host a variety of events specifically for Bigs and Littles. As we understand people may have time conflicts, they will not be mandatory –  only highly encouraged!

To volunteer, please submit this volunteer form by Wednesday, March 13th at 11:59PM.

Thanks for all your help!

Volunteer to lead a Study Group for the 14X and 300-level courses this spring!

Hello Allen School Students and happy spring!

We are looking for volunteers to lead study groups for the 14X series and 300-level courses this spring!

Why lead a study group?

Leading a study group is a great way to work on your communication skills, support your fellow undergrads, and get experience on your resume. Additionally, it is a low commitment way to determine if a teaching assistant position in the future is a good fit for you or to keep up with your current tutoring skills. This is a volunteer position but study group leaders who meet with their group every week during the quarter will get CSE swag!

Study Group Details:

You will meet once/week working with a group of 1-4 undergrads, covering CS concepts from a course of your choice. No prior tutoring experience necessary (this is an opportunity for students in the course to get extra help in addition to resources offered by the instructor and teaching assistants). The commitment is one hour/week for one quarter plus a mandatory one hour training for all study group leaders = a total commitment of 10 – 15 hours total.

Requirements:

Your knowledge of the material (you must have completed and received a 3.5+ in the course you would like to lead a study group for) and your willingness to help!

To volunteer, please review these guidelines before submitting the volunteer form on that page. The form is due on Friday, March 30th at 8:00PM.

***Do not fill-out this form if you would like to request to be in a study group this quarter. A separate e-mail will go out with information on how to request to participate in a study group.

Questions? E-mail Lacey (lacmas17@cs.washington.edu). Thank you for considering!

Tutors needed for CSE 333 and CSE 369

Good morning!

We are still looking for tutors for CSE 333 and CSE 369.

If you are interested in tutoring one of these courses, please e-mail Chloe Dolese (cdolese@cs.washington.edu) with a few sentence summary about why you are interested in tutoring.

As a reminder…

  • Tutors meet once per week for one hour with a group of 1-4 students
  • Total time commitment is 10-15 hours total
  • No experience necessary! We are looking for tutors who are excited about tutoring, have done well in the course they want to tutor for, and will be able to commit to 10-15 hours for the quarter
  • This is a volunteer position
Thank you for considering!

Reminder – we still need about 25 mentors

Hey folks, just a reminder, please sign up to be a CSE mentor if you have been in the major for at least a quarter. We are in need of about 25 additional students.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Welcome back folks, it’s almost time to kick off the new year!

To do that effectively, we need veteran CSE majors (you have completed at least one quarter in the major) to mentor our new students, and we have a LOT of new majors.  Just over 300 to put things in perspective.  Ideally we’d have at least 75 mentors.  Even with 75, that means everyone will have a small group of mentees, 4-5 each.

Welcome night will be Wednesday, Sept. 27th from 430-600 or 630 approximately.  If you can help us out, please fill out the survey to volunteer

There will be burritos for those who participate, but the REAL reason to volunteer, is to help all of our new majors learn how welcoming and inclusive this community of undergraduates are here in UW CSE.

We look forward to seeing you all back at UW in one week!

Help Microsoft do product research for Microsoft Visual Studio!

Hello UW Students,

We’re looking for students to participate in a product research study with the Visual Studio IDE team over at Microsoft! In particular, we’re recruiting undergraduates (preferably sophomores or juniors) with some coding experience (you’ve taken at least an introduction to programming course) and little to no experience with Visual Studio to help us improve the onboarding and getting started experience for customers new to Visual Studio.

If you’re interested, you should be available for one of the following days below. We ask that you’re able to spend 2 hours with us on the Microsoft campus and reserve time on either end to commute over to the Microsoft campus in Redmond (which is easily accessible via the 542 bus from the UW campus).

  • Thursday 7/27
  • Thursday 8/10
  • Thursday 8/17

The first step is to email me (Cathy à cathys@microsoft.com) to let me know you’re interested and available for one of the listed days. If you meet the study criteria, an user experience recruiter will contact you to schedule the day/time that works best for you and share all the exact details with you.

This is a great opportunity to see how we do product research at Microsoft for developer tools. As a thank you for your time and participation, you will receive a generous gratuity! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me.

Thank you!

Cathy Sullivan
