Microsoft Scholarship Applications – Deadline February 1, 2011

University Scholarship Program for the 2011-2012 School Year
http://www.microsoft.com/university/scholarships

Program Overview
Microsoft College scholarships are designed to encourage students to pursue studies in computer science and related technical disciplines. Students will be awarded scholarships in recognition of their passion for software, academic excellence, and ability to make a difference in the software industry.
Microsoft is excited to be offering scholarships for the 2011–2012 academic year. Applications must be postmarked by February 1, 2011.

At Microsoft, we want to encourage students from groups currently under-represented in the field of computer science to pursue technical degrees. While all candidates who meet the criteria for eligibility described below may apply, a large majority of our scholarships will be awarded to female students, under-represented minority students or students with disabilities. Minority applicants must be a member of one of the following groups under-represented in the software field: African American, Hispanic or Native American. Microsoft will review all applications and select final candidates on the basis of eligibility, quality of application, displayed interest in the software industry, commitment to leadership and financial need. We will target announcing scholarship recipients by March 18, 2011.

Yesterday’s Networking Outages and Issues

All, you most likely experienced  severe problems yesterday.

The cause of these problems, was a cable plugged into two network ports at the laptop workstation areas.

Please take care NOT to bridge network ports, it brings the entire subnet to its knees.

CLUE in Mary Gates CSE student available to help

From: Yams <yams@cs.washington.edu>
Date: Sun, Oct 3, 2010 at 8:19 PM
Subject: CSE CLUE Tutoring
To: Undergrad Advisor <ugrad-cs-advisor@cs.washington.edu>

Hi everyone,
Welcome back to another quarter of classes.  I was recently hired as the new CLUE tutor for CSE, and although CLUE is generally geared towards introductory classes, the IPL is already a great resource for students taking 142/143.  Therefore, I would like to open up CLUE CSE for 300 and some 400 level courses as office hours can sometimes be difficult to attend.  If you have any questions at all, I will be available to help Monday and Wednesday nights from 7 to 10 pm in the main lobby of Mary Gates.  If there is enough demand, I will be able to stay until midnight.  Even if you don’t have any specific questions, you are still welcome to come and talk about CSE and get some free candy from CLUE!  I look forward to seeing you.

Change Seminar

In preparation for the fall quarter, I wanted to invite you all to attend in the one credit Change Seminar on Thursdays at noon in the Paul Allen Center (Room 203).

Change (http://change.washington.edu) is a group of faculty, students, and staff at the UW who are exploring the role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in improving the lives of underserved populations, particularly in the developing world.  We are cover topics such as global health, education, micro finance, agricultural development, and general communication, and look at how technology can be used to improve each of these areas.

This fall we will be alternating between talks by invited speakers and group discussions.  Those who sign up for credit will be asked to participate in leading one of the discussions (this requires very little work and can be done in groups).  We are in the process of scheduling speakers, so stay tuned to our calendar (http://is.gd/3PkTF), Twitter (http://is.gd/3PkVk), or mailing list (http://is.gd/3PlkS) for more information.
Please consider enrolling (CSE590C1, SLN: 12384).  If you are unable to enroll, feel free to come to any of the meetings you are interested in attending! The seminar is available for all UW students and the content is designed to be widely accessible. We encourage students from all departments to enroll/attend if interested.

Please forward this message to the relevant mailing lists, and we hope to see you on Thursday October 1 at noon in Room 203 of the Paul Allen Center.

Thanks,
Nell
