This Week: Yahoo! Hack U

Yahoo! is coming to campus this week to hold their annual Hack U competition. There will be talks held on Wednesday and Thursday focusing on mobile development, accessibility and Javascript. The week culminates in a twenty-four hour hack-a-thon running from Noon on Friday until Noon on Saturday.
The hack-a-thon is comprised of teams made up of any number of students. The teams compete against each other building whatever they may imagine. Dinner, snacks and breakfast will be provided throughout the hack-a-thon. Each team will have a chance to present their work to their peers and a panel of judges. The judges will select winning teams and award prizes. The first place team will be awarded three iPads.
Amazon is offering free AWS credits for participating teams. Code for America is sending a representative from the local Seattle government to talk about interesting challenges and data they’d like to see developers working on.
This competition is especially great because there is really no limit to what teams can do. You can see what teams have done in the past here: http://developer.yahoo.com/hacku/show/2010/feb/washington

CSE Intellectual Property seminar: CSE 490T

cse 490T SLN 19557

IP for Engineers:

This course will provide a survey of intellectual property law for a
technical (non-legal) audience, with a primary focus on patent law.
The purpose of the course is to assist engineers and scientists in
navigating and utilizing various intellectual property regimes
effectively in the business context. In the patent realm, topics will
include patent preparation and prosecution, patent claim
interpretation, and assessing patent validity and infringement. Other
intellectual property areas that may be covered, time permitting,
include copyright, trademark, and trade secret law. Where possible,
the course will also endeavor to balance the discussion of practical
legal considerations with broader policy questions (e.g., should
certain subject matter be off limits for patenting?, the relationship
between innovation and IP, approaches to patent reform, etc.).
For additional details and prerequisites please visit the course home

Free pizza at IBM/Watson event this Tuesday

IBM is buying us pizza.  Although the program starts at 7:00, the pizza starts at 6:30.  EE105.

We will host a viewing of the 2nd of the 3 IBM Watson Jeopardy games,  on the 15th, starting at 7:00 p.m. and running until 8:15 p.m.  We’ll Slingbox the HD television video onto the screen in the normal colloquium room, EE105.  (Thanks to Aaron Timss for rigging this up.)

Oren Etzioni, Luke Zettlemoyer, Eric Horvitz (MSR), and some local folks from IBM will provide some technical background prior to the game itself, a brief analysis afterwards, and plentiful wisecracks during.  (The game itself is 7:30-8:00.)

Like IBM’s assault on chess in 1997, this is a landmark accomplishment — win, lose, or draw.

There was a very nice NY Times Sunday Magazine article last June (in contrast to the lame-ass philosophical hand-wringing in today’s paper):

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/20/magazine/20Computer-t.html

Please join us.  This should be fun and educational.

Ugrad Web Feedback Forum – Thurs 2/3

The Ugrad Advisors would like to invite you to view and give feedback on the soon-to-be launched reorganization of the CSE Ugrad webpages (please note: this is just a simple reorg – not an entire redesign – and does not include the whole CSE web). While the rest of the CSE web is planning to transition sometime later this year, the Ugrad pages were in need of some serious help and we couldn’t wait any longer.

Where: CSE 002
When: Thursday, Feb 3 @ 3:30pm

Please join us this Thursday in the lab for some hands-on access to the new Ugrad pages – we want your constructive criticism!
